Postgraduate Scholarship in Chemical Engineering ?" The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
    SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
The School of Engineering at The University of Queensland is renowned for its world-class engineering education and pioneering research. Boasting an annual research income in excess of $22 million, the School is one of the leading providers of engineering research in Australia and houses more than 400 world-class academic staff, research fellows and research students. This means that the successful applicant will become part of a broad research community that offers huge opportunity and exposure. This scholarship is being funded as part of an ARC (Australian Research Council) Discovery project which investigates the behaviour of saline water interfaces. Interfaces with salt solutions are ubiquitous within nature (e.g. the ocean surface) and biological systems (e.g. blood cell membranes). However our understanding of the specific interactions between the salt ions and the interfaces is still limited by empiricism. This project aims to expand our understanding of the molecular phenomena and properties of saline water?"air interfaces that underpin industrially important processes such as micron bubble coalescence and dissolved air flotation in water desalination. The research will develop efficient and sustainable processes for industries to minimise energy, water and chemical usage, and the impacts of water pollution and tailings disposal. The findings will have direct benefits in dissolved air flotation used in desalination to produce drinking water.
The role The applicant will work in close collaboration with the research team of the ARC Discovery Project DP0985079: ?oMolecular phenomena and engineering of saline water-air interfaces?. The applicant?Ts main focus will be the molecular modelling (Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics) of the air-liquid interfaces. This is the key to breaking the reliance on empiricism in the understanding of flotation and desalination (or similar) processes that use saline water. The molecular modelling will be used in conjunction with other fluid modelling techniques to match results from experiments performed by other members of the research group. This is a very interesting area of research with very wide applicability so that the applicant has greater freedom to progress their research and/or academic career after your PhD. The applicant will join a research group with world class experimental facilities such as atomic force microscope and a vibrational sum frequency generator and will receive some exposure to these technologies. The research team involved with the ARC Discovery project has a strong record of research and publication to give the successful applicant the best start to their research career. The successful applicant will be required to communicate their results as papers to journals and presentations to relevant conferences. Interstate and overseas travel may be possible if high quality research outcomes are achieved.
The person Applicants must possess a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics or similar. Previous experience with molecular modelling or study in interfacial type phenomena will be an advantage but is not essential. Emphasis will be placed on the quality and potential of the applicant rather than specific past experience. The applicant will need to work well within a team environment to achieve the best research results and demonstration of these capabilities will be of an advantage. The application process is open to both Australian and International applicants.

Remuneration The remuneration is through a tax-free stipend of not less than $26,669 per annum. This may be increased to attract high quality applicants. A relocation allowance is available for applicants outside of Queensland.
Contact Further information can be obtained from Professor Anh V. Nguyen on +61 7 3365 3665 or by email: anh.nguyen@eng.uq.edu.au or Dr Greg Birkett on +61 7 3365 3813 or by email: g.birkett@uq.edu.au.
Applications Candidates should email their full CV to Professor Anh V. Nguyen.
Interviews are planned to start as early as 3 March 2009 but applications will continue to be accepted until the positions are filled.
