This experience is as fascinating as it is difficult and cannot be measured only in terms of language level improvement. "...it gives a different perspective to life, great maturity, and Is an incredible personal step!" (Catherine Cachard of France, former participant).

    NACEL INTERNATIONAL

Thanks to our structure established in numerous countries, we can offer today, to students of different ages, the unique experience of studying for one complete year in a foreign country, just like a teenager of that country. This fabulous experience will remain an incomparable advantage on both a personal and professional level.

Nacel Directors, in thirteen countries, are available to help your student make his academic stay a successful one. Each host country has a Nacel national office, in ad***ion to local Nacel coordinators and representatives in all regions of the country. A local coordinator will work with each individual student, including arranging their homestay and acting as the student's contact person throughout the year.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO

The student is still at school,
The student has finished high school,
The student is already at College.
    THE IDEAL CANDIDATES

They are open-minded, fulfilled and keen to learn. They like family life and are therefore eager for this new experience. They need a sense of humour and a lot of patience. They are able to leave their prejudices at home. They must be self- sufficient whilst realizing that they may not benefit from all their expected independence.

They must attend school when required and in order to be sociable share, with their host family, their pleasures of everyday life. They are enthusiastic, communicative and will socialize with their new family and new friends.

    THE IDEAL PARENTS

They are totally in agreement with the project and are supportive without raising unreasonable expectations. In this type of project, communication between parents and children is of paramount importance. Before and after the stay abroad, parents will support the candidate during difficult periods. They will write regularly about their daily life so the candidate does not feel isolated and rejected by their own family. Returning home is not easy and everybody will need to be patient. The parents will find their child different and more mature. They will have to acknowledge that their child has grown.

    THE REASONS TO ENROLL

These are numerous and varied. Of course, the student will become bilingual and will also learn to assert himself, to approach new subjects, understand and appreciate them.
The candidate and their parents must think together about their real motivation. The stay abroad should be part of a long-term project. It must not be an escape or a therapy to problems at home, a difficult relationship with parents or difficulties at school. Any kind of psychological problems will not necessarily be solved by being away and can get worse. The candidate will have to face them again when he returns.
Our advice : the candidate must have a real interest in the country he wants to visit.

    SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

Attending a school abroad for a full academic year is the fastest way to become bilingual. Students will follow a set schedule of classes. They will attend some compulsory subjects and choose other subjects from a large range of options, offered by every school. Schools are carefully chosen , they will offer the best possible cultural background. Regular assessment and constant support will help the students to progress and get cre***s for their achievements. Once the long-term program is completed with success, students will receive a NACEL International Diploma.

    FAMILY EXPERIENCE

Living with a host family is the best way to learn first-hand about a foreign culture. The language the student has been learning will come alive as he makes new friends, shares their culture and discovers new things about himself and the world. Volunteer host families are carefully chosen by Nacel coordinators abroad.
Hosts welcome their student as an ad***ional member of the family and provide care and support... a home away from home. The student should be prepared to take part in family life and to help with various tasks around the home, as a full member of the family.
During the stay, a student may be received by more than one family. Becoming part of a community of students and family abroad is an enriching experience, which brings growth in self-confidence and an increased awareness of the world we share.

Some families can only host for a term. Nacel International reserves the right to place the student with different families.

    PROGRAM FEE INCLUDES

placement in a family and school with NACEL support throughout the experience
Full board accommodation (except in the U.K. where it is half-board)

domestic transportation from city of arrival to final destination

We recommend an ad***ional US $150 monthly to cover any personal spending needs.

Nacel Australia is very limited in the number of student exchange places that it can offer to overseas partners, as places are based upon points accumulated by the number of outbound students. Nacel Australia is an accre***ed student exchange organization and is therefore entitled to issue forms which students use to apply for a student exchange visa.

Australia in general sends a very small number of outbound students compared with the number of demands received for inbound student exchange programs to allow a greater number of overseas students to participate. There are two other alternatives :

1/ Stipend programs - Students can participate in the program but a stipend is paid to the host families. This is to encourage more families to host in the knowledge that the students' basic expenses are covered.
2/ Fees programs - Student fees are controlled by the Australian government. Students can choose the city of placement and will be given a choice of schools. Cost are dependent on the school chosen and the precise length of stay.
