Leading the Western Conference by a game and a half over the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Lakers, the New Orleans Hornets hosted the Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday afternoon.
Andris Biedrins steamrolled in for a 3 point play to put the Warriors on top 25-14 late in the first quarter.
Off an in-bounds lob pass from Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington dropped in a shot at the buzzer to keep the Warriors ahead 31-22 at the end of the 1st quarter.
The Hornets came back to take the lead 50-46 when Jannero Pargo buried a 29-foot three point jumper late in the 2nd quarter. Pargo scored all 15 of his points in the 2nd.
At the end of the quarter, Chris Paul kicked out a pass to Peja Stojakovic for a 3 pointer and a 59-51 Hornets lead at the break.
Paul drove in for a 3 point play to put the Hornets on top 66-62 in the early part of the 3rd quarter.
Harrington answered with a 3 point play after getting knocked off his feet by David West to cut the Hornets lead to 66-65. He had 16 points on the day.
The Hornets led 88-78 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
West knocked down a jumper to extend the Hornets lead to 90-78 at the start of the 4th quarter. He had 25 points and 9 rebounds for New Orleans.
The Warriors came back to tie the game at 90 all, when Monta Ellis picked off a pass form Paul and flew in for a dunk.
Paul made up for the miscue with a 3 pointer at the other end of the court, for a 93-90 Hornets advantage. Paul had 16 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds to register his fourth career triple double.
Midway through the 4th, Ellis sliced his way through the Hornets defense for a bucket to keep the Warriors close, trailing 96-92. He poured in a game high 35 points.
That was the closest the Warriors would get. The Hornets took over from there and stretched their lead to 105-92 on a 3 pointer from Stojakovic. He scored 25 points in the contest.
The Hornets went on to beat the Warriors 108-96 to tie a franchise record for single-season victories with 54.
As a result of the loss, the Warriors fell 1/2 a game behind the Denver Nuggets for the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoff race
