Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Đức (Born 1897 – died 11 June 1963) Thích Quảng Đức was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who burned himself to death at a busy Saigon road intersection on 11 June 1963.At the age of 15, he took the samanera (novice) vows and was ordained as a monk at the age of 20 under the dharma name Thích Quảng Đức. After ordination, he traveled to a mountain near Ninh Hòa, vowing to live the life of a solitary Buddhism-practicing hermit for three years. He returned in later life to open the Thien Loc Pagoda at the site of his mountain retreat. He went on open many many Buddhist temples in South East Asia.

The monk was protesting against the persecution of Buddhists by South Vietnam's Ngô Đình Diệm administration. Malcolm Browne won a Pulitzer Prize for his iconic photo of the monk's death, as did David Halberstam for his written account. After his death, his body was re-cremated, but his heart remained intact. This was interpreted as a symbol of compassion and led Buddhists to revere him as a bodhisattva, heightening the impact of his death on the public psyche.
The self-immolation is widely seen as the turning point of the Vietnamese Buddhist crisis which led to the change in regime.

Thích Quảng Đức emerged from the car along with two other monks. One placed a cushion on the road while the second opened the trunk and took out a five-gallon gasoline can. As the marchers formed a circle around him, Thích Quảng Đức calmly seated himself in the tra***ional Buddhist me***ative lotus position on the cushion. His colleague emptied the contents of the gasoline container over Thích Quảng Đức's head. Thích Quảng Đức rotated a string of wooden prayer beads and recited the words "Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật" ("homage to Amitabha Buddha") before striking a match and dropping it on himself. Flames consumed his robes and flesh, and black oily smoke emanated from his burning body. No one who witnessed the event was unmoved. Yet he himself remained completely motionless during the 10 minute immolation.

" I was to see that sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of burning human flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes or ask questions, too bewildered to even think.... As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him."

Thích Quảng Đức's self immolation Thích Quảng Đức arrived at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung Boulevard and Le Van Duyet Street in Saigon, as part of a procession that had begun at a nearby pagoda. Around 350 monks and nuns marched in two phalanxes, preceded by the Austin Westminster, carrying banners printed in both English and Vietnamese. They denounced the Diệm government and its policy towards Buddhists, demanding that it fulfill its promises of religious equality.

Photographer Malcolm Browne took a series of shots, one of which is shown above, another of which won the 1963 World Press Photo of the Year.

The news and images of Thích Quảng Đức's self-immolation spread around the world and was later regarded as a turning point in the Buddhist crisis and the critical point in the collapse of the Diệm regime. President John F. Kennedy, who saw the picture while reading the paper in bed the following morning later remarked that "no news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one." (He was of course, to feature in some famous photos and footage himself later that year!)

I guess that to many people around the world, the event made them think that if a 'good man' like Thích Quảng Đức was prepared to demonstrate against President Diem in this way, there must be something genuinely wrong with the government supported by the US government.

Ironically, President Diem's views about the Buddhists were not entirely without justification. The ********* knew that Diem and his family were Catholic, and often used Buddhist monasteries as cover for their activities.

There is a special sort of "shrine" here to Thich Quang Duc, a former Buddhist monk from the Linh-Mu Pagoda in Hue.

"On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from the Linh-Mu Pagoda in Hue, Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon, Vietnam.. Eye witness accounts state that Thich Quang Duc and at least two fellow monks arrived at the intersection by car, Thich Quang Duc got out of the car, assumed the tra***ional lotus position and the accompanying monks helped him pour gasoline over himself. Lực lượng Phụ nữ bán quân sự (Phong trào Phụ Nữ Liên Đới) và Thanh nữ Cộng hòa (Đệ nhất Cộng hòa 1956-1963). Do bà Trần Lệ Xuân, phu nhân của cố vấn Ngô Đình Nhu sáng lập. Hai tổ chức này được võ trang, huấn luyện quân sự.

Theo lời tuyên bố của bà Nhu thì mục đích của lực lượng này là “để sát cánh chia sẻ hiểm nguy gian lao với các chiến sĩ trên chiến trường”, và chỉ tiêu nhân sự phải đạt là 1.500 phụ nữ có võ trang như đạo Nữ Quân Nhân của vợ Năm Lửa trước kia.

Trong suốt mấy năm hiện diện, hai tổ chức này chỉ làm hai loại công tác: mặc đồng phục diễn hành vào những ngày lễ Biểu dương lực lượng ở trung tâm Sài Gòn và tập cơ bản thao diễn hoặc tác xạ tại vận động trường Hoa Lư hoặc vườn chơi Thị Nghè

Chỉ có vậy thôi nhưng lúc nào cũng được bà Nhu đề cao như là một thành quả của cuộc Cách mạng Nhân vị nhằm giải phóng phụ nữ. Chi phí cho “đoàn quân” này chắc chắn là do ngân quỹ "quốc gia" đài thọ và sự vô dụng trơ trẽn của nó, lẽ tất nhiên, "chế độ" phải gánh chịu.

Khẩu súng ngắn mà mấy cô (giờ thành bà cả rồi) bên trên xài là khẩu gì bác?

Colt 45 (M1911), khẩu này giờ cũng không thấy công an, quân đội dùng nữa. mấy năm nay mình lùng sục khắp đất Sài Gòn này để kiếm cho ra cái bao súng của nó và kiếm mua một khẩu hàng airsoft nhưng chưa được. Bao súng thì giờ khá bất khả thi vì không có hàng, hy vọng sau này có dịp vào kho đạo cụ làm phim thì còn may ra chứ súng trong khi giá gốc chỉ gần 1 triệu nhưng đem về Việt Nam thì đám giang hồ chúng nó hét gần 4 triệu. colt 45 , cách đây vài năm em có được mó thử 1 khẩu , vẫn còn sử dụng được nhưng mội tội hư mất cái chốt giữ tiếp đạn nên phải xài băng keo mà dán lại , không thì rớt tiếp đạn
