Khi Alanis Morissette trình làng album Jagged Little Pill mình nghĩ sẽ có một Janis Joplin mới. Rất tiếc sau này Alanis bị choáng ngợp bởi thành công nên cô không tiến xa hơn như mọi người kỳ vọng. Trong album này mình bị ám ảnh bởi ca từ của Hand in my pocket. Mình thường tự hỏi tại sao cách tiếp cận và lựa chọn từ ngữ đơn giản thế mà lại có thể làm nên một ca khúc tuyệt hay. Cô ấy nói về bản thân "I''m broke but I''m happy. I''m poor but I''m kind. I''m short but I''m healthy, yeah...I''m lost but I''m hopeful ... baby. What it all comes down to is that everything''s gonna be fine fine fine"... Lời hát đơn giản nhưng lại truyền tải cái tôi chân thành và kiên cường của tác giả trước cuộc sống "I''m young and I''m underpaid. I''m tired but I''m working, yeah. I care but I''m restless. I''m here but I''m really gone. I''m wrong and I''m sorry baby".
Điều thú vị của ca khúc này không phải chỉ bởi hình ảnh cái tôi của nghệ sĩ dàn trải trong từng câu chữ mà còn bởi phép ẩn dụ tinh tế tại phần kết của mỗi đoạn. Ai cũng biết thái độ cho một tay vào túi và một tay thì làm việc khác là thiếu lịch sự, a-ma-tơ, thái độ ấy thế nào cũng bị mọi người coi thường. Alanis đã mượn hình ảnh ẩn dụ này đề nói lên niềm lạc quan sống bất chấp những chuyện rắc rối tầm phào đời thường. ''And what it all comes down to is that I haven''t got it all figured out just yet. Ca từ của bài hát đẹp như một áng thơ, câu chuyện của 3 nhân vật rất đơn giản và thân thuộc. Một người đàn ông cô độc mệt mỏi với cảnh bụi bậm của cuộc sống hàng ngày, nhưng mỗi nhìn đôi nhân tình trẻ hẹn nhau trong cảnh hoàng hôn trên cầu Waterloo, tác giả thấy ''I am in paradise''. Tình yêu vượt qua hoàn cảnh và đem lại thiên đường cho cuộc sống. Thành công của bài hát còn phải kể đến giọng ca truyền cảm kỳ lạ của tác giả (có thế do bài này quá riêng tư với Ray Davies) và tiếng đàn ghi ta tuyệt vời của cậu em Dave Davies. Đây có thế coi là một trong những ca khúc hoàn hảo nhất của âm nhạc Anh, loại bỏ hết những sự rườm rà chỉ đọng lại những gì tinh tuyw nhất trong từng ca từ, giọng ca và hoà âm.
