Luxury Living At The Army Hilton
[IMG]Korean War surplus olive drab green canvas tents were extremely hot in the Vietnamese summer and chilly in the winter where temps. would drop into the fifties. Consider how much fun it was to take an outdoor shower with cold water when it was that cold. My goosebumps had goosebumps. The young lady in the photo was one of our "hooch maids".

Chris Noel visiting wounded in Qui Nhon
[IMG] Chris Noel visiting wounded troops in Qui Nhon. She wore one of the first mini-skirts we had ever seen and attracted a lot of attention. During her multiple tours of Vietnam working for Armed Forces Radio her helicopter was shot down twice while visiting forward bases considered too dangerous for Bob Hope. Many vets consider her to be a combat veteran. She still works helping Vietnam vets to this day.

    Chris Noel Comforting The Troops
[IMG]Chris Noel hands out an autographed photo to a recovering wounded soldier. She brought a ray of sunshine to many suffering soldiers. The fellow in the photo was recovering from two missing legs (below the knee) and a severely wounded left arm.

    Chris Noel Visiting The Front
    [IMG]
Chris probably visited more forward bases than some generals. As a result she saw things that affected her to this day. After the war she was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The photo above is all that needs to be said about the impact she had on the troops.

"The Sandpipers" started as an informal group of Red Cross girls and GI''s who use to pick and play folksongs at the ARC recreation center in Cam Ranh (Army) Bay. This group developed into an actual clubmobile program as "The Sandpipers" and toured and performed for different military units (Army and Navy) and the convalescent hospital (on the Air Force side of Cam Ranh).

[IMG]VC? Are these people doing the hokey pokey?
[IMG]The MUST was deflated in November 1969 and moved north to QuangTri to take over the IIIMAF....which was not called the 18th Surgical Hospital.
[IMG]This was taken in early 1970 in QuangTri ... I took them on an expe***ion to Hue and the Citadel ... and on to visit GiaLong''s tomb. Didn''t taken them along my extended tour because of the apparent danger ... they were too new in-country
[IMG]Traveled Tour-365 times two from 1969-70/1970-71 with stops at the 18th in Camp Evans and QuangTri...on the second tour, parked at the 27th Surg in ChuLai before moving to the high rent district over at the 91st by way of TuyHoa.

[IMG]Mail Call Halloween 1969 Camp EvansPJ R.( formerly of Pleiku), Sheri M, Ann C., Marsha T., Col. Casey''s head (Chief Nurse), Sheila H., and Cindy
Marsha T. was part of the original dirty dozen who moved to the 18th and QuangTri to staff a 100 bed facility plus a pediatric wing! We were a hardy bunch ... we worked hard ... we played hard and when it was necessary, we were all up to our ears in whatever needed to be done!
[IMG]This photo was taken long about the time we were on alert for a Sapper attack ...NO FEAR ... ''cause we didn''t accept the reality that someone out there would bother us, even when the people from the village had removed their children from the Pediatric wing ... a sure sign of impending trouble... as it turned out, nothing happened!
[IMG]The nurses depicted are "Blanche" and "Maude" which are "chosen" names ... I was "Hester" ... we were the "three ladies from the Bronx" except that none of us ever lived in the Bronx, and I was the only one from the "east" coast ... it''s a long story but it has to do with our habit of hangin'' out on the second floor of the "long house" and hollerin'' at the folks at the long house across the way ... it was part of the imagery created by the release of MASH and a stereotypic raucous behavior.  The Red Cross sent us a movie projector ... and as I recall, we had two movies ... MASH and Night of the Living Dead ... art very much influenced life ...
