Herbie Mann Herbie sinh ngày 16 tháng tư năm 1930 tại Brooklyn - New York.
Ông được công nhận là một trong những người ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ đến thể loại jazz flute. Các tác phẩm của ông chắc chắn được biết đến nhiều nhất trên toàn thế giới.
Rất lâu trước khi người ta có ý tưởng hòa trộn âm nhạc của các nền văn hóa của nhân loại, ông đã thử nghiệm nhịp điệu (rhythms) và hòa âm (harmonies) với âm nhạc của Châu Phi, Ấn Độ, Jamaica, Trung Đông (Ai Cập, Iran và các nước nằm giữa hai nước này), Nhật Bản .v.v..
Nghe nhạc của Herbie đúng là có rất nhiều âm hưởng khác nhau, tập hợp một cách hài hòa và đầy bất ngờ ! Thậm chí mình còn thấy một chút Việt trong đó !!

In 1935, pianist William �Count� Basie (born August 21, 1904), a fixture on the Kansas City jazz scene since the late 1920s, organized his own rocking, riffing, blues-based big band. The following year this freewheeling unit came east and took New York by storm. For the next decade and a half, Basie�s stellar cast � which included such original jazz stylists as tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry �Sweets� Edison, trombonist Dickie Wells, drummer Jo Jones, and singer Jimmy Rushing � set the standard for big band swing.

Basie broke up the band in 1950 and formed an all-star septet. But he missed the power and glory of sixteen men swinging, so in the fall of 1951 the Count began to reassemble his orchestra. Founded on an ever-growing book of first-rate charts by top-rung arrangers like Neal Hefti, Ernie Wilkins, and Quincy Jones, his new e***ion evolved into an ensemble of amazing strength and precision, but also one of many moods and colors, as strong at pianissimo as it was at fortissimo , as swinging at slow tempos as it was at fast ones. But make no mistake, this reborn unit was packed with accomplished soloists. One by one, the Count brought in trombonists Benny Powell, Henry Coker, and Al Grey, trumpeters Joe Newman and Thad Jones, and the tenor saxophone tandem of Frank Foster and Frank Wess, all modern, bop-inspired improvisors who also were completely at home in the Basie idiom.
Through the �60s, the �70s, and into the �80s, the Basie band remained the definition of big band jazz. And even after his death on April 26, 1984, The Count Basie Orchestra continued to record and tour under the leadership of three of its most distinguished alumni: first Thad Jones, then Frank Foster, and, from 1995 to 2003, trombonist Grover Mitchell.

The honey-toned chanteuse on the surprise Brazilian crossover hit "The Girl from Ipanema," Astrud Gilberto parlayed her previously unscheduled appearance (and professional singing debut) on the song into a lengthy career that resulted in nearly a dozen albums for Verve and a successful performing career that lasted into the ''90s. Though her appearance at the studio to record "Girl from Ipanema" was due only to her husband Joao, one of the most famed Brazilian artists of the century, Gilberto''s singular, quavery tone and undisguised naivet? propelled the song into the charts and influenced a variety of sources in worldwide pop music.
Born in Bahia, Gilberto moved to Rio de Janeiro at an early age. She''d had no professional musical experience of any kind until 1963, the year of her visit to New York with her husband, Jo?o Gilberto, in a recording session headed by Stan Getz. Getz had already recorded several albums influenced by Brazilian rhythms, and Verve teamed him with the cream of Brazilian music, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jo?o Gilberto, for his next album. Producer Creed Taylor wanted a few English vocals for maximum crossover potential, and as it turned out, Astrud was the only Brazilian present with any grasp of the language. After her husband laid down his Portuguese vocals for the first verse of his and Jobim''s composition, "The Girl from Ipanema," Astrud provided a hesitant, heavily accented second verse in English.

Considered by many to be the 20th century''s greatest female singer of jazz and American popular song, Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) is one of the few singers whose work transcends generations and musical genres. Fortunately, over the course of a career that spanned six decades, ?oThe First Lady of Song? amassed a nearly unrivaled discography. It is a testament to Fitzgerald''s art and her place in popular culture that the vast majority of her recorded output is readily available on compact disc.

Fitzgerald''s career can be divided into five periods. During her Big Band Years (1935-1941) , she sang with the Chick Webb Orchestra (renamed after Webb''s death in 1939 as Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra). By the age of 20, Fitzgerald was the most popular female singer in America, and, in 1938, she wrote and sang one of the biggest hits of the entire decade, ?oA Tisket, A Tasket.? Her Decca Records Solo Years (1941-1955) were a mix of groundbreaking scat recordings, classy pop records, and trite novelty songs. By the early 1950s it became clear that Decca didn''t know how best to utilize Fitzgerald''s talents. Norman Granz, founder of Jazz at the Philharmonic and Ella''s manager, formed Verve Records in no small part as a vehicle for Fitzgerald.
