This Cal Tjader compilation is an amazing and very cohesive collection of well-played, well-arranged songs. It''''s one of those rare cd''''s that everyone I play it for seems to like. It''''s great to listen to and also is one of the best "all-purpose, interesting background music" cd''''s in my collection for various parties and get-togethers with friends.
On the one hand there are the rich and varied latin jazz rhythms underpinning many of the numbers. Then, there''''s a certain early ''''60''''s "swinging bachelor pad" air to the sophisticated, well-crafted, vibraphone-driven arrangements that support the songs without smothering them.
If you like music like Miles Davis "Kind Of Blue", Vince Guaraldi (the guy who did all the music on the "Peanuts / Charlie Brown" TV specials) and early Santana, then you will enjoy this Cal Tjader collection.

    Reviewer:
Five Stars for great performances by a number of Oliver Nelson''''''''s ALL STAR Big Bands. Oliver Nelson''''''''s "Verve Jazz Masters 48" is a compilation of at least three vinyl LPs of this true GENIUS of American music: "The Sound of Feeling with Oliver Nelson" (the Andrece Twin''''''''s ''''''''Sound of Feeling'''''''' group, with Nelson as a soprano sax wielding sideman on one sided playing some of his greatest recorded solos ever, and Nelson''''''''s all star big band on the other side, which deserves it''''''''s own full CD), the wonderful LP "Full Nelson" (which also deserves it''''''''s own full CD), in ad***ion to songs from other sources.
It''''''''s a welcome fact that Nelson plays alot of alto and tenor sax on this CD and he is on fire, as usual, when he gives himself the opportunity to step up. "Ricardo''''''''s Dilemma", a 6/8 to 4/4 wonderful fast waltz, has a sizzling soprano sax solo by Nelson and wonderful orchestration: a tune that has haunted me for decades. "Hoe Down" seems to be a country/jazz homage to Aaron Copeland and it is an unusually successful tune that jumps. But the real big guns come from "Ballad for Benny (Goodman)", the poignant and unusually-voiced "Greensleeves", a beautiful "I Remember Bird", a wonderfully elaborate "Sidewalks of New York", "Paris Blues", "Full Nelson", "Patterns for Orchestra", and many others. WHEW!! Tons of great Big Band jazz in this compendium.
This compendium should be in the collection of all jazz fans, along with Nelson albums like "Sound Pieces", "Blues and the Abstract Truth", "More Blues and the Abstract Truth", and "Live in Los Angeles", among others. Five BIG stars for an All Star arranger, composer, musician, and band leader who passed away at much too young an age.

    Reviewer:
Anita O''Day is as adept at the swinging numbers as she is at the tender love ballads. That is not to say that she is merely competent. No, she is a jazz singer of the highest order. On the swingers (eg, "No Soap, No Hope Blues" and "Old Devil Moon"), she displays a great sense of rhythm and fun along with some top notch improvising. As for the love ballads (eg, "When the World Was Young," "Angel Eyes," and "If the Moon Turns Green"), she infuses each song with nostalgia and longing. This very excellent collection weighs more in the ballads. I recommend it highly, especially for those new to Anita O''Day or to jazz singing.
Ms O''Day''s combination of joyous tone and hip musical sensibility is gloriously captured on the 16 track compilation which she helped put together. From her earliest Clef 10" LP ANITA O''DAY COLLATES (1952) as well as her 1956 classic ANITA, among others, and featuring some of the best arrangements and bands including Buddy Bregman, Johnny Mandel and Russ Garcia, this is the ONE MS O''DAY to have if you only want one. Highlights include two tracks with THE THREE SOUNDS (FLY ME TO THE MOON and AH THE APPLE TREES, WHEN THE WORLD WAS YOUNG and a reprise of BOOGIE BLUES with Gary McFarland. Although she was great when swinging with the KRUPA-ELDRIDGE BAND in the 1940''s, this disc is a must have. Ms O''Day is a legend and a musical hero.

    Reviewer :
I find Stitt''s work to be uneven both over time and even over a single recording, but this recording is fabulous. I would give many of the recordings from which these songs are drawn four stars, but sometimes this would be because of the overshadowing strength of one or two songs. This recording takes the best without the rest. There is not a clunker on it. It ranges from the delightfully upbeat showmanship of "Sunny Side of the Street", complete with the syncopated vocals of Gillespie (it''s the only vocal on the recording and you will find yourself singing it), to more delicate companionship with Oscar Peterson and his trio. By contrast, "Moten Swing" off the original recording with Peterson sounds so hackneyed to me that I just cannot listen to it.
None of the songs date from Stitt''s funk period, which is a style of his that has not worn as well over the years. These are pieces that sparkle even amidst the talented field of works from the high era of acoustic jazz. The sound quality of the recordings is also good enough to not be a detraction, as is not the case with many recordings of this period.

    Reviewer :

Verve Jazz Masters 51, a collection of jazz and popular standards sung by Blossom Dearie accompanying herself on the piano has finally made a major impression on me as an important Jazz vocalist, something on the order of a distaff Mose Allison, without her doing the composing.
I first heard her name from an audiophile friend in the 1970s, when almost all audiophiles were Jazz fans. I was not without some affection for some pop female vocalists such as Barbra Streisand, who I ''discovered'' upon the release of her first album. But, this was just after the crest of the great Rock explosion where female vocalist primarily meant Grace Slick, Janice Joplin, Mama Cass, and Sandy Denny.
Also, in the age of ''Jefferson Airplane'', ''The Grateful Dead'', ''Pink Floyd'', and ''Led Zeppelin'', one almost had to believe that the name Blossom Dearie was a stage name. But, I have come around to realize that all this was foolishness, and Blossom Dearie is a major and important Jazz vocal performer. The easiest way to appreciate what Blossom Dearie can do with a song is to listen to her ren***ion of the Gershwin''s ''Someone to Watch Over Me''.
For this I''ll trade in my library of blues recordings and my three copies of ''Stardust'' done by other people to get more such performances.
My only problem with this recording is the same problem I have with most titles in this series. They are too short. A good classical CD can easily top 65 minutes, so I don''t see why Verve can''t squeeze more than 52 minutes onto this disk.
I have nothing to say to those of you who already know and appreciate Ms. Dearie. To those who come to this review from some of my other reviews, I recommend you give this woman a serious listen!

Verve Jazz Masters 52 - Maynard Ferguson

    Reviewer:
Maynard is not simply a great trumpet player because of his outstanding control of the high register. This album, composed of various works Maynard made in the 1950''s coming from the albums Dimensions and Boy With Lots Of Brass, is great all-around jazz trumpet playing. Maynard''s playing is fiery and energetic throughout and also has a lot of heart. Most of these songs were recorded when Maynard was a freelance musician in Los Angeles. The album opens with a tune he did with crazy saxophonists Ben Webster and Benny Carter called "King''s Riff". There are a bunch of solos here but Maynard and Webster shine the most, even though Maynard sounds a bit unsure in parts (he was only twenty-three at this recording date). Then, it moves into a Willie Maiden chestnut called "Maiden Voyage" (not to be confused with Herbie Han****''s composition which became famous but was not made until a decade later). This tune is simply playful and fun, and Maynard solos in the upper register with intelligence and skill. On "Willie Nillie", Maynard picks up the valve trombone and solos on this pretty Maiden composition is a nice showcase for Maynard''s trombone skill. Following is "Hymn To Her", which is one of my favorite tunes on this whole set. It''s cool jazz at its finest, and listen to Maynard swing effectively in the lower register before jumping up high to end the tune. A great selection. "The Way You Look Tonight" is a popular standard and a great song. Maynard takes up most of the solo space with impressive bop playing. Another highlight is "Can''t We Talk It Over?", which features trumpeters Pete Condoli and Shorty Rogers (I think). This is a great big band flavored ballad. The trumpet section is so tight. "Egad Martha" and "Dancing Nightly" are cool dance tunes with great saxophone work and heroic soloing from Maynard, along with "Pork Pie" and the slower "Dreamboat". On "The Lamp Is Low", Maynard plays more great valve trombone on a song based on a Ravel composition. The trumpet section is tight and Maynard plays great trombone. Lorraine Geller on piano quotes "Pop Goes the Weasel". On "Love Me Or Leave Me", they speed up the tune a bit and Maynard plays it effectively, and all the players sound good. Irene Kral (mother of Diana possibly?) sings "Moonlight In Vermont" beautifully, and Maynard takes a screaming solo in the middle after playing great lead trumpet, and somehow makes it sound appropriate. On "Easy to Love", a great Cole Porter standard, Maynard and the band swing and sound great, along with "Wildman", which has an Asian influence in its bop theme, and has a great shout chorus.
Overall on this album, it''s obvious Maynard tried his best to avoid the upper register and show off his improvisational and melodic skills. This may be his most well-rounded album out right now. On some songs, he goes more for the style of a Clifford Brown than that of his own, but still manages to keep his own voice. Any jazz fan will love this album. Highly recommended.
