OUTSTANDING: Van Basten could return! (ENG)

Legendary Holland striker Marco van Basten is considering a sensational return to football after admitting that he is still drawn to the game. "I have the feeling that I'm floating back to football," the former former AC Milan hero explained.

"It's interesting, after distancing myself from the sport for so many years," Van Basten told the Dutch press agency ANP. "However, I don't know what this will lead to. I don't have any concrete offers."

The former Ajax and Milan star spoke out on the Old Course at St Andrews, where the accomplished amateur golf player performed in the Dunhill Links Championship together with, amongst others, Gary Lineker and Bobby Charlton.

"I was quite nervous before the first hole. However, to say that it was worse than before a European Cup final would be a bit exaggerated," Van Basten added.

The former World Player of the Year started playing golf during his days in Italy. He perfected his game after he was forced into early retirement from football eight years ago, because of persistent ankle problems.

"Golf is a great game, nothing more and nothing less. It also teaches you lessons of life. For example you can't let off steam with aggression. It's a great leisure activity. I'm always trying to improve my game, but it is and remains a hobby to me."

"I have a great life with a lot of free time. However, I have to admit that I'm rather looking forward to doing something else," the former Holland international said.

Van Basten made a brief comeback to football last year, when he joined the amateurs of Noordwijk for practice, because he missed the excitement of the game. But he had to quit the training sessions after he experienced a recurrence of his ankle problems.

The striker, who was voted European player of the year three times, reached stardom as a member of the legendary Milan side of the late 1980s and the early 1990s.

He was also outstanding for Holland during the golden European Championship of 1988, when he struck five goals, including his magnificent volley in the final against the Soviet Union, to help Holland win the tournament.

Van Basten would not be the first of his generation to make a comeback in football in a different capacity.

Of the Euro 88 squad Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, Jan Wouters, Erwin Koeman, John van't Schip have all turned to coaching, while Gerald Vanenburg was appointed assistant coach at 1860 Munich on Thursday.
