A smaller country can always invade and occupy a much bigger country if the former one has a more advanced civilization than the latter. Vietnam can do what the Japanese did to China in WW2. Japan is much smaller than China; however, with a more sophisticately equipped army, with better logistic preparation, the Japanêse was able to defeat the under-equipped, poorly trained Chinese. Similarly, the German was able to kick their European bigger asses for a similar reason: they are more advanced in their thinking and their technological resources. Nothing is not impossible under the MIlky Way, mind you! In contrast to Vietnam - we were invaded, but never be occupied for long, the Chinese has had a tracked record of being occupied by several foreign conquerors like the Manchurian, the Mongolian, the Westerners, the Japanese,......

yes. you yourself say thats poorly trained chinêse, they were pỏoly equiped under manchurian governent. Japan developed its technologies and made several good policies such as learn from the west and open its doors to the westerners while China was still satisfied with their small achivements under manchurian government and closed its doors.

is that because they are more advanced? definatly wrong. mongolians and manchurians are well known as greatest fighters. they not only conqured China, they conqured the world, but later they have to follow chinese cultures and speak and write in chinêse as Chinese are more advanced. it cant be easily changed by others so easily. thats why vietnamese learns so many things from chinese culture. So i dont ever believe vietnam will ever dare to do anything to China as vietnamese are not great fighters like mongolians and not high technology country like japan, i dont see any reason why you are comparing vientnam with mônglians and japanese.

Dont forget that westerners who declared war with China were never alone. they were allies. including USA, FRANCE, BRITÍH, PORTUGAR, JAPAN, RUSSIA, GERMANY AND SPAIN.
they are not small. just Russia is twice the size of China.
I think your friend is right. the best way for vietnam is just try to keep good diplomatic ties with neighbouring countries. and dont try to invade any countries.
like what vietnam did during vietnam-cambodia, laos, thailand war. thats why china invade vietnam. and after vietnam withdrew its troops, so did China.

No, you are so wrong! The PLA main troops quickly fled back to China just 2 weeks after fighting with rag-tag Vietnamese local force. Vietnamese army, on the other hand, did not even bother to withdraw a single troop from Cambodia during the whole conflict. We only withdrew from Cambodia when we knew for sure that Polpot would not have any chance to come back (and annahilate the whole Cambodia nation).
By the way, the so-called great fighter Mongols are only great when comparing to Chinese. Those same warriors were defeated totally 3 times in Vietnam, thus the border of the Mongol empire were stopped from expanding further to the South from China''''''''s border.
But, being good at defending ourself, we do not have much interest in invading other countries (unless they are stupid enough to invade us first - in return we may have to invade them to solve the problem for good).
But I think this is enough discussion about invading each other. Just focus on the topic: the might (or not so, for now at least) of the PLA army.

The Type 89 APC is believed to be the successor to the older Type YW 531 series of full-tracked vehicles. The Type 89 is almost identical to the Type 85 (Type 89) but the latter has a slightly shorter and narrower hull.
The Type 89 has an all-welded hull and is fully amphibious, being propelled through the water by its tracks. The driver sits at the front of the vehicle with the commander to his rear. Specifications for the Type YW 534 are provided in the lists and paragraphs that follow. The Type 89 has a torsion-bar suspension with each side having five dual rubber-tired road wheels, a drive sprocket at the front, idler at the rear and track return rollers.
The engine compartment is to the right of the driver with the air-inlet and air-outlet louvers in the roof and the exhaust outlet on the right side.
The Type 89 has a driver''s left-opening single-piece hatch cover and three forward-facing periscopes, one of which can be replaced by an infrared device for night driving. It also has a commander''s single-piece hatch cover with an integral vision device, a large troop compartment door at the rear where that has a vision block and firing port, a single circular roof hatch on each side in the forward part of the troop compartment roof and two oblong roof hatches to the rear of the 12.7mm machine gun installation.
It also has a bank of four smoke dischargers mounted on each side of the forward part of the hull.
There are two firing ports and periscopes in the left side of the hull and three or four firing ports and periscopes in the right side. The Type YW 534 can cross a 2.5-meter trench, mount a 0.7-meter vertical step, climb a 60-percent grade, climb a 40-percent side slope and can ford amphibiously.
The Type 89 has a 12.7-mm heavy machine gun with a load of 1,100 rounds. The 12.7-mm machine gun has no overhead protection for the gunner.
