    Announcement
NORAD Scholarships for Asian Students at AIT in 2003 to 2005
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As part of their long-standing partnership, the Norwegian Agency for International Development Cooperation (NORAD) and AIT entered into a new cooperation agreement in May 2003 for financial and technical assistance in human resources development in Asia for the period 2003-2005. The cooperation agreement aims to strengthen the institutional capabilities through higher education and training in NORAD Programme countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, East Timor, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. A major part of the agreement consists of support for 60 scholarships to be provided to Asian students from the above mentioned countries for masterâ?Ts studies at AIT.
For the next three years, an annual intake of 20 masterâ?Ts degree students will be admitted under the Agreement. At least five (5) pre-masterâ?Ts bridging scholarships will also be provided each year to five (5) of the students whose English language or academic background need further improvement, especially for those coming from Cambodia, Laos, East Timor and Vietnam. The scholarships will be awarded mainly in the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) with special emphasis on natural resources management, environment, and energy and its related fields, namely, Agricultural Systems and Engineering (ASE), Gender and Development Studies (GDS), Natural Resources Management (NRM), Regional and Rural Development Planning (RRDP), Environmental Engineering and Management (EEM) Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management (AARM) Electric Power System Management (EPSM), Energy Economics and Planning (EEP), Energy Technology (ET) and Integrated Tropical Coastal Zone Management (ITCZM).
Only candidates who have qualified for admission at AIT will be considered for the NORAD scholarships. To be eligible for admission to the Masterâ?Ts degree, a candidate must hold a Bachelorâ?Ts degree (normally of a four year program) or its equivalent in an appropriate field of study from an institution of recognized standing and has undergraduate grades above average. For entry requirements, please visit the AIT admissions website at http://www.ait.ac.th/AIT/admissions. AIT application forms can also be downloaded from this website.
The entry for admission at AIT is in August each year. To be considered for the August semester, the applications must be submitted to the AIT Admissions Office by April.
NOTE: AIT strives to strengthen the role of women in the development process by promoting their enrolment/participation in the postgraduate education and research, and therefore, solicits applications from women candidates. Qualified women candidates will be equally considered for AITâ?Ts admissions and scholarships. Candidates from NORAD partner institutions in the region are encouraged to apply.

A STOCHASTIC SPATIAL RAINFALL MODEL FOR ENGINEERING RISK ASSESSMENT

Funding: ARC Discovery grant funding is available for one PhD scholarship

Project Supervisors: Prof. George Kuczera, Dr. Andrew Metcalfe and Dr. Martin Lambert

    Contact: George Kuczera (02) 49216038 cegak@cc.newcastle.edu.au
Current Australian hydrologic design practice is moving towards use of continuous simulation to more accurately evaluate the performance of the water-related infrastructure for managing floods and droughts. A major impediment is the inability to simulate the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall. This project aims to develop a stochastic rainfall model that will simulate long records of representative six-minute duration rainfall throughout the target region. The proposal introduces a three-level hierarchical model of space-time rainfall building on experience of a point rainfall model developed in previous ARC research. Practical issues dealing with data quality and validation will also be addressed.

PhD Scholarships, Environmental Biotechnology CRC, Murdoch University, Western Australia
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by Environmental Biotechnology CRC and tenable at Murdoch University. The research project will investigate pathogen die off and depuration during various stages of integrated bio processing of waste (digestion, aquaculture, hydroponics). The project is in collaboration with SARDI, South Australia and demands a good microbiology background and an understanding of wastewater treatment processes.
Applicants should possess first class or high second class Honours/Masters Degrees in environmental/wastewater microbiology. Background in the use of mathematical modelling and an understanding of process modelling would be an advantage.
The scholarship will provide a stipend of $A 25,000 per year, tax-free for 3 and a half years (fees are also included but only for New Zealand and Australian citizens and permanent residents, otherwise international fees apply). Allowances in ad***ion to the scholarship include laboratory expenses, local and overseas conference travel and assistance with thesis costs. The project is based at Murdoch University, Western Australia, but will require short term visits to SARDI, South Australia.
Interested candidates should forward their application with a recent bio data and contact details of 2 referees to g.ho@murdoch.edu.au before 30th June 2004.

    To Orchids,
there is a PhD student position currently available. The work will be optimising a membrane filtration + PV panel system for the commercialisation of a completely self-dependent water desalination system (sponsored by Monopump). Removal of trace contaminants such as As, NO3-, etc will also be looked at.
It is 25 K per year scholarship but school fee of about 20K per year will be charged if the applicant comes from overseas. However, as there are no qualified applications at this stage, school fee waiver has been discussed and likely to get thru to attract excellent oversea students.
Requirements for the candidate are obviously very high. If you think you can give it a shoot, pls send me a message. If you know anyone pls recommend.
    Regards
