    A Flower in Winter: The Poinsettia''s Story

    Here is how the poinsettia became one of (7) popular flowers:
    In eighteen twenty-five, a man named Joel Roberts Poinsett was (8) the first United States (9) to Mexico. Mister Poinsett was a (10), but he was also interested in plants. He (11) back examples of a colorful plant to the United States. 
    The (12) name for the plant is Euphorbia pulcherrima (yoo-FOR-bee-uh puhl-KEHR-ee-muh). In Latin, that means ?omost beautiful euphorbia.?  There are hundreds of (13) of the euphorbia family. Rubber trees, trees that produce (14) and (15) oil, and the (16) -- an important root crop -- are all members of this family.
    Wild poinsettias can grow to four (17) in size. They contain (18), like rubber trees. 
    The flowers of the poinsettia are very small. Around the flowers are colorful leaves called (19). These make the plant popular.
