A: I''m Avi Ar***ti with Rosanne Skirble, and this week on Wordmaster: English teacher Lida Baker (1.suggests) five resolutions for people who want to improve their English in the New Year.
LIDA BAKER: "My first resolution that I would (2.recommend) people make is to (3.suspend/ spend) a certain amount of time listening to English -- and it can be five minutes a day or it can be 10 (4.minutes) a week or it can be whatever (5.suit/ suits) a person''s work (6.schedule), life schedule or whatever. But it''s really important to set (7.goals) and to stick to them. And it would be very helpful if people had Internet access to do this, because what I?Tm going to recommend is listening to (8.sign/ sites) that have (9.scripts) included."
RS: "What do you do if you don''t have access to a computer, how can you listen better?
LIDA BAKER: "Well, almost everyone all over the (10.world) has access to pop music. And one of my resolutions would be to spend time listening to English music. The (11.advantages/ advantage) of listening to music is that it''s a really wonderful way to work on your (12.pronunciation), because you get a feeling for the (13.stress) and the (14.rhythm) of the language when you''re singing. And also music is full of (15.idioms), so it''s a terrific way to learn (16.colloquial) vocabulary and to work on your pronunciation. And a third advantage of listening to music is that it''s really easy to remember.
"So for people who have access only to a radio, even they can do something to improve their English just by listening to pop music. And I (17.mine/ might) add, if you do have access to the Internet, there are lots of Internet sites that will give you the (18.lyrics) to pop songs. Do a search, type ''''music'''' or ''''songs'''' plus ''''lyrics?, and you''ll find sites where you can type in the name of the song and it will give you the lyrics to the song.
RS: "So spend a little bit more time listening, or have a (19.goal) for listening. Listen to English music. What else?"

LIDA BAKER: "Something else I tell my (20.student/ students), and they''re always (21.surprise/ surprised) when I tell them this, is read children''s books."
    AA: "That (22.makes) sense, though."
LIDA BAKER: "Yeah. Why do you say that?"
    RS: "Well, few words."
    AA: "It''s simpler."
RS: "Direct, simple. Lots of pictures."
    LIDA BAKER: "There you go."
RS: "That puts it in a context."
LIDA BAKER: "There you go. And the other thing is, you can find children''s books at all levels. If you were a total beginner in English, you start with (23.books) that have just a few words on the page and lots of pictures, and you can work your way up to books that have (24.relatively) speaking more text and fewer (25.elutriation/ illustrations). But again, children''s books are very (26.motivating). To this day I enjoy reading the books that I read to my daughter when she was a little girl."
AA: "So now we''ve got the listening to the radio, listening to music, going online and looking for scripts of (27.program/ programs) to go with the audio, reading children''s books. What''s your next resolution?"
LIDA BAKER: "Learn a new word every day. And if you don''t have time to do it every day, do it every other day. Again, pick a (28.realistic) goal. Choose your word, look up the meaning, but then don''t stop there. Look at the (29.examples) in the dictionary for how the word is used. Is it used as a noun? Is it a verb? Is it (30.used) to talk about people? If it''s an adjective, does it have a positive meaning or a negative meaning? So look for what''s called the (31.collocation/ connotation) of the word. And then, when you''re sitting in your car, or you''re walking to the bus stop or sitting on the bus, practice. Put the word into your own (32.sentences). Think of ways that you could use that word.
"And so now we come to our last resolution, which in a way is the most difficult one, because my last resolution would be, even if it''s only very (33.occasionally), talk to native (34.speakers) every chance you get."
AA: Lida Baker from the American Language Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, with five New Year''s resolutions that people can make to improve their English.
RS: Before we go, as we come to the end of another year, we note the passing of Mary Newton Bruder, the (35.linguistic(adj.)/ linguist(n. nhà ngôn ngữ học)) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known as The Grammar Lady. She dedicated her life to helping people (36.improve) their grammar. We are grateful for her (37.contributions) to Wordmaster. Mary Newton Bruder (38.died) in August at the age of sixty-four.
RS: That''s all for Wordmaster this week. Our e-mail address is word@voanews.com. And Internet (39.users) can read and listen to all of our (40.segments) at voanews.com/wordmaster.

    The End
THIS IS A STORY ABOUT A MAN named Eddie and it (1) at the end, with Eddie (2) in the sun. It might seem strange to start a story with an ending. But all endings are also (3). We just don?Tt know it at the time.

THE LAST HOUR of Eddie?Ts life was spent, like most of the others, at Ruby Pier, an (4) by a great (5). The park had the usual attractions, a board-walk, a Ferris wheel, (6), bumper cars, a taffy stand, and (7) where you could shoot streams of water into a clown?Ts mouth. It also had a big new ride called Freddy?Ts Free Fall, and this would be where Eddie would be (8), in an accident that would make (9) around the state.

AT THE TIME of his death, Eddie was a (10), white-haired old man, with a short neck, a (11), thick fore-arms, and a (12) on his right shoulder. His legs were thin and (13) now, and his left knee, wounded in the war, was ruined by (14). He used a cane to get around. His face was broad and (15) from the sun, with salty (16) and a lower jaw that (17) slightly, making him look prouder than he felt. He kept a cigarette behind his left ear and (18) hooked to his belt. He wore (19) shoes. He wore an old (20). His pale brown uniform (21) a workingman, and a workingman he was.

EDDIE?TS JOB WAS ?omaintaining? the rides, which really meant keeping them safe. Every afternoon, he walked the park, checking on each (22), from the Tilt-A-Whirl to the Pipeline Plunge. He looked for (23), loose (24), worn-out steel. Sometimes he would stop, his eyes (25), and people walking past thought something was wrong. But he was listening, that?Ts all. After all these years he could hear trouble, he said, in the spits and (26) and (27) of the equipment.

WITH 50 MINUTES left on earth, Eddie took his last walk along Ruby Pier. He passed (28).
?oFolks,? he (29), touching his cap.
They nodded politely. Customers knew Eddie. At least the regular ones did. They saw him summer after summer, one of those faces you (30) with a place. His work shirt had a (31) on the chest that read EDDIE above the word MAINTENANCE, and sometimes they would say, ?oHiya, Eddie Maintenance,? although he never thought that was funny.
Today, it so happened, was Eddie?Ts birthday, his 83rd. A doctor, last week, had told him he had shingles. Shingles? Eddie didn?Tt even know what they were. Once, he had been strong enough to lift a (32) in each arm. That was a long time ago.

              ?oEDDIE!???TAKE ME, Eddie!???Take me!?
Forty minutes until his death. Eddie made his way to the front of the roller coaster line. He (33) every attraction at least once a week, to be certain the (34) and steering were solid. Today was coaster day?"the ?oGhoster Coaster? they called this one?"and the kids who knew Eddie (35) to get in the (36) with him.
Children liked Eddie. Not teenagers. Teenagers gave him (37). Over the years, Eddie figured he?Td seen every sort of do-nothing, snarl-at-you teenager there was. But children were different. Children (38) at Edie-who, with his protruding lower jaw, always seemed to be grinning, like (39)?"and they (40) him. They drew in like cold hands to a fire. They (41) his leg. They played with his keys. Eddie mostly (42), never saying much. He figured it was because he didn?Tt say much that they liked him.
Now Eddie (43) two little boys with backward base-ball caps. They raced to the cart and (44).  Eddie handed his cane to the ride (45) and slowly lowered him self between the two.
?oHere we go?Here we go!..? one boys (46), as the other pulled Eddie?Ts arm around his shoulder. Eddie lowered the lap bar and clack-clack-clack, up they went.

A STORY WENT around about Eddie. When he was a boy, growing up by this very same pier, he got in an (47). Five kids from Pitkin Avenue had (48) his brother, Joe, and were about to give him a beating. Eddie was a block away, on a stoop, eating a sandwich. He (49) his brother scream. He ran to the alley, (50) a garbage can lid, and sent two boys to the hospital.
