Happy new year. I''d like to send all my best wishes to our great "Practice Listening", especially to Maroon who have founded this topic. Here are my listening:
I am Barber Cline with the VOA Special English â?oHealth Reportâ?. New research has found no link between the use of cellular telephones and tumors in the head. The study is one of the largest ever done on the possible links between brain cancer and cell phone radiation. British researchers look for a possible link between cellphone use and a rare tumor called acoustic neuroma. Acoustic neuromas develop on the nerve linking the brain and the inner ear. Researchers also investigated links between cellphones and other kinds of cancers but they say acoustic neuromas would be the most likely because they grow close to where people hold cellphones. Scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research in London gathered information from studies done in Britain, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Cellphones have been widely used in those countries for more than 10 years. The researchers questioned more than 4000 people, 678 of them had developed acoustic neuromas. The researchers then compared their cellphone use over a ten-year period. The result was published in the British Journal of Cancer. Anthony Swerdlow led the study. He said the results suggest there is no major risks of acoustic neuromas in the first ten years of using cellphones. But he said the technology is still too new to know about long-term effects. He also warned that young children who used cellphones could be at higher risks. The results of a research Swedish studied also found no link between cellphone use and brain tumors. In 2000, a British study found no serious health effects from the use of cellphones. However, it warned that children should use them only in emergency. Some investigations have found a cancer risk, a study by the WHO last year found that people who have used cellphones for at least 10 years may be at risk for a rare brain tumor. Other study has suggested radiation from cellular phones can cause hitting in the brain, headache and stomach problems. Some scientists suggest that the increased number of cases of brain cancer is likely linked to the use of cellphones. Almost 2000 million people use cellphones around the world. This VOA Special English â?oHealth Reportâ? was written by Cynthia Kirk. Our reports are online at voaspecialenglish.com. I am Barber Cline.
