This week we bring you some of the most important protest songs of the past century. Music is a way to express thoughts, feelings and ideas. People have written protest songs to speak about political and social issues. Protest songs have denounced slavery, war, poverty and inequality. They have supported peace and civil rights. The American sociological association has made a list of the most important protest songs in America during the past century. The list of 14 songs was published in the Journal Context. We''ll tell 8 of those songs.
During the civil right movement of 1950s-1960s, African Americans protested for equal rights. The American sociological association says 2 songs were probably sung the most during that time. They are We shall overcome and Ain?Tt gonna left nobody turn me round. Both songs are versions of tra***ional spiritual songs sung by Black people. The organization also named another song from the civil right movement on its most important protest songs.
The song is Lift every voice and sing. It was written by brothers James Weldon Johnson and Jey Rosamond Johnson in the early 1900s The words of the songs came from the poem James Weldon Johnson wrote. He had been asked to speak in as birthday celebration in his hometown in Florida for former President Abraham Lincoln. The song later became known as the national song of praise for African Americans. Singer Kelly William recorded Lift every voice and sing.
Music experts say the song Strange fruit is one of the greatest songs ever. It condemned hanging of African American men in the American South.
Abe Pr wrote a poem about the subject in 1937. He was a school teacher in New York city. He showed the poem to blues singer Billy Holiday and turned it into a song.
Florence Riss wrote the song Which side are you on? in 1930 during the labor struggles of goal miners in the state of Kentucky. The group Paul and Mary sings about the need to organize workers into labor unions.
Bob Dylan had written and sung many protest songs that condemned war or support civil rights. The American sociological association says, it was difficult to choose just one of his famous protest songs. They include Blowing in the wind, ?????.and Master of war. However the organization chose this song The times they are of changing.
Sometimes the reason for protest is a personal one. Autits Redding wrote the song. Soul singers ??..asks the man in her life to honor her to show her some respects.
In hip-hop music, rappers made calls for social change. In 1989 the hip hop group Public Enemy sang about Negro right and freedom of speech in the song Fight the power.
Singer John Lennon wrote and sung several protest songs. He wrote the song Imagine in the late 1960s to call for peace during the Vietnam war. Experts say the message of the song remains important today. It calls on people all over the world to live in peace and unity.
We leave you now with the song We shall overcome. It has been sung around the world for many different causes, including civil rights, human rights, and workers?T rights.

Welcome to This is America in VOA Special English. I?Tm Barbara Klein. This week we bring you some of the most important protest songs of the past century.

Bài này dài thật. Tốc độ gõ word của mình lại không đáng tự hào lắm. Thôi thì post từng phần vậy. Lại nhờ mọi người chỉnh hộ với nhé.

I ?~m Phoebe Zimmermann and I?Tm Bob Doughty.
On our program this week, we talk about emotional or mental influences commonly called stress. We also tell about the effects of stress on people?Ts health.
Many people in the United States suffered the emotional or mental problems after the
terrorist attacks on Sep. 11th 2001. Terrorism creates fear and fear often leads to severe stress., Studies suggest that stress can reduce the body?Ts ability to fight disease and can lead to serious health problems.
Stress affects everybody everyday. It?Ts your body reaction to physical, chemical, emotional or environmental influences. Some stress is unavoidable and may even be good for us. Stress can keep our bodies and minds strong. It gives us the push we need to react to any urgent situations.
Some people say it makes them more productive at work and give them more energy.
Too much stress, however, can be harmful. It may make an existing health problem worse or it can lead to other illnesses or diseases if a person is at risk for the con***ion. For example, your body reacts to stressful situations by raising your blood pressure and making your heart work harder. Then it?Ts especially dangerous if you?Tve already had heart- disease or high blood pressure. Stress is more likely to be harmful if you feel helpless to deal with the situation or the problem that causes stress.
Anything you see as a problemscan cause stress. It can be caused by everyday situations or by major problems. Stress results when something causes your body to act as if it were under attacks
Causes of stress can be physical such as injury or illness or they can be mental such as problems with your family, job, health or finances. Many visits to doctors are for con***ions connected with stress. The tension of stress can interfere with sleep or cause uncontrollable anger or sadness. A person may become more forgetful or find it harder to think clearly. Losing one?Ts sense of humor is another sign of an unhealthy amount of stress. Stress can lead to other health problems if people try to ease it by smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drug or by eating more or less than normal.
Chronic stress lasts a long time or happens often. Chronic stress causes the body to produce too much of the hormones Cortisol and Adrenalin. Cortisol is called the worry hormone. It?Ts produced when we are afraid. Adrenalin is known as a fight or flight hormone. It prepares the body to react physically to a threat. Person under chronic threats produces too much of these hormones for long periods. Too much Cortisol and Adrenalin can result in physical problems, and even changes that lead to stress linked illnesses. Cortisol provides high level of energy during important periods. However, scientists have become concerned about the hormone?Ts long termed affects on our health. Evidences show that extended periods of
Cortisol in the body weaken bones, damage nerve cells in the brain. It also can weaken the body?Ts defense system against diseases. This makes it easier to get viral and bacteria infections.
Chronic stress has been linked to high blood pressure and heart disease.
