Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Snow
This is the Steve Ember and this is Bob Doughty with Science in the News of Voa special English Programs about recent development in Science. Today, we?Tll tell you everything you ever wanted to know about snow.
Winter weather is returning to Northern areas of the World. In much of the United State Winter means return of Snow. Snow is the subject of great interest to weather experts. The experts sometime have difficulties to estimate where, when or how much snow will fall. One reason?Ts a heavy amount of snow falls in surprising ? small areas. Another reason is a small change in temperature can mean difference between rain and snow. Snow is a form of frozen water. It can make many groups of tiny ice particle called snow crystal. These crystals grow from water particle in cold cloud. They usually grow around a piece of dust. Or snow crystals have six sizes. But they grow in difference shapes. The shape depends mainly on temperature and water level in the air. Snow crystal grows in one or two designs, fleck line and curlum line. Fleck line crystal are flat. It is formed when the temperature is about 30 degrees below zero Celsius. Currumline snow crystal looks like stick . It is formed when the temperature is about 5 degrees below zero Celsius. The shape of snow crystal may change from one form to another as crystal passes through levels of air with difference temperatures. When melting snow crystal or rain-wrapped fall through very cold air they freeze be formed small particle of ice called ?. Group of frozen water wrapped are called snow ?. Under some con***ions these particles may grow larger and form some slit of ice or hell.
When snow crystals take together they produce snow fleck. Snow fleck comes in difference sizes. As many as one hundred crystals may joint together to form a snow fleck larger than two and one half of centimeter. Under some con***ions snow fleck can form that are five centimeters long. Usually, they require near freezing temperature like wind and changing con***ion in earth atmosphere. Snow condenses much less water than rain, about 15 centimeter of wet snow as much water as two and one half centimeter of rain. About 76 centimeter of dry snow is equal the water in two and one half centimeter of rain.
Much of water we use comes from snow. Melting snow provides water for rivers, electric power centers and agricultural crops. In western United State, mountains of snow provide 75 percent of all service water supplies. Snow fall helps to protect plant and some wild animal from cold winter weather. Fresh snow is made lovely air trapped among snow crystal. Because of air have trouble moving the movement of hit is greatly reduced. Snow also is known to influence of movement of sound wave. When there is fleck snow on cloud, the surface of snow takes in or absorbs sound wave. However snow can become hard and flat as become older and or it has been strong wind. Then the snow surface can help send back sound wave. Under this con***ion sound may see clearer and travel faster.
Generally, the color of snow in eyes appears white. This is because of the light we see in the sun is white. Most materials take in the sunlight. This keeps them their color. However when light travel from air to snow sunlight is sent back or reflected. Snow crystal has many surfaces to reflect sunlight. Yet snow doesn?Tt take in a little sunlight. This is light that keeps snow with white appearance. Sometime snow or ice may appear to be blue. The blue light is product of long travel pass through snow or ice. In simple term, think of snow or ice as the ? . The ? is designed to reject some substances by permitting others pass through. In the case of snow all the light make it through if snow is only centimeter thick. If it is meter or thicker however blue light often can be seen.
Snow fall is extreme in northern and southern areas of the world throughout the year. However, the heavy snow fall has been reported in mountain of other areas during winter. These areas include Austria in Italia, Switzerland, the coastal mountain areas of western Canada, a rocky mountain in the United State. In warmer climate snow is known be fallen in areas over 4900 meter above sea-level. Each year, the counter of the United State has on average 100 snow storm. An average storm produces snow for two to five days. Almost every part of the country has received snow fall at least one time or another. Even part of southern Florida has reported of a few effect. The national record of snow fall in a single reason what said 1998 and 1999, 2495 centimeter of snow fell at mount Barkankey areas in the northwestern state of Washington.
People in may other areas have a little or know snow fall. In 1936 a physicist from Japan produced the first man-made snow in a laboratory. During 1940s several American scientists developed method for making snow in other areas. Cloud with extremely poor water are mixed with man-made ice crystal such as ? and ? crystal. Sometime rice ice particle and liquid ? are used. Today special machines are use to produce limited amount of snow for winter holiday ski areas.
Snow is responsible for the death of hundreds of people in the United State every year. Many people died in traffic accidents on road which covered snow or ice. Others died for being out in cold or from heart attack caused by extreme physical activities. A few years ago, a major storm caused several problems in the Eastern of the United State. It struck southeastern in January, 1996 before moving to the east coast. Storm was blamed for more than one hundred deaths. It forced United State to declare emergency measure. Virginal and west Virginal were hit hard. In some areas there snow fall amount was more than one meter high. Several states limited drivers in emergency vehicles. Most major airports were closed for at least a day or two. A week later, two other storms broat ad***ional snow to the eastern coast. In New York city areas a heavy wave of snow forced the top of some buildings to break down. Many travelers were forced to walk long distances through deep snow to get to train stations. People may not able to avoid living in areas where snow falls often. However, people can avoid becoming victim of winter snow storm. People should stay at home until storm had passed. While removing a large amount of snow they should stop and rest often. Difficult physical activities during snow removal can cause heart attack. It is always a good idea to keep a lot of necessary supplies at your home even before winter begins. The supplies include food, medicine, clean water and extra power supply. Some drivers become truck in their vehicle during the storm. If it happens people should remain in or near their car unless they see some kind of help. They should get out and clear a pave around vehicle prevent possibility of cover non oxy gas poison. People should tie or break color object to the top of their car to increase chance of rescue. In side of their car people should open window a little for fresh air and turn on the engine in ten or fifty minutes every hour for heat. People living in areas where winter storm are likely should carry emergency supply in their vehicle. The include food, emergency medical supply and extra clothes to stay warm and drive. People in the areas should always prepare for winter emergency. Snow can be beautiful to look at but it can be dangerous.
