Fetal Skin Cells May Treat Burns
This is Shep Oâ?TNeal with the VOA Special English Health Report
A method tested in Switzerland may offer a new way to treat burns. Researchers use skin cells grown from a fetus to treat serious burns in eight children. Some of the burns were of the most severe kinds. The skin cells came from a pregnancy that ended when the mother has an abortion at fourteenth week. She gave the scientists permission to use 4 cm of skin from her fetus. The cells divided in a laboratory. Then the scientists mixed the cells with collagen. Collagen is a protein that enables skins to stretch. The researchers say this process can provide many small pieces of skin tissues. They place some of the pieces on top of the wound of the children. The pieces of the tissues were replaced with fresh one every three to four days. The scientist says the process was not at all difficult. The children were between the ages of fourteen months and nine years old. Usually doctor use skin from the other parts of patientâ?Ts body to repair damage from burns. The process is called â?~graftingâ?T. However, those skin cells reproduce slowly, and sometimes painfully. And the new skin often does not look good. Patrick Hohlfeld of the University Hospital of Lausanne led the study. He said members of his team were surprised of the result. He said they expected the fetal tissues to work much the same as the skin grass. The British medical magazine â?~The Lancesterâ?T reported the finding. Reports said the wound on the young burn patient heel in about 15 days. Most graft treatments take six times longer. And the scientists say the repair was complete. Most of the children recover for use of the damage areas. The researchers follow the progress for up to 2 years. Other researches say the result of the Swiss experiments still need to be compared to current burn treatments. They notice that no one know if the burn on the children would have heeled without the fetal cell treatments. And questions have been raised about the morality in the use of tissues from an aborted fetus. The Washington Post published a letter from a policy expert at the Christian Medical Association. He said mistreatment of early human life can easily progress to other groups in society.
