    Two Ph.D. Positions available for non-Italian citizens
    at the Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Informatics
    ====================================================================
    The University of Calabria invites applications of non-Italian
    citizens for 2 Ph.D. scholarships for the 2009 class of the
    Doctoral Program in Mathematics and Informatics.
    The Program has been activated by the Department of Mathematics
    (www.mat.unical.it), which is one of the largest departments of
    the University of Calabria.
    The Ph.D. period will be 3 years.
    The University of Calabria will provide one successful candidate
    with a grant, of about EUR 1050,00 per month.
    For all the successful candidates, the University of Calabria is
    also likely to cover living expenses (mensa + accommodation in the
    campus).
    Ph.D. positions are offered in a pleasant working environment with
    excellent possibilities for professional development.
    Successful candidates in Informatics (with projects focused on AI
    and Computational Logics) will join the Database and Artificial
    Intelligence group of the Department of Mathematics. The group has
    deep knowledge in several AI areas, which are investigated with
    respect to their theoretical aspects and their formal foundations
    as well as with the respect to the design of practical
    applications most often carried out in tight cooperation with
    industrial partners. In particular, members of the group conduct
    high-level research in the development of innovative
    infrastructure for knowledge representation and reasoning, and
    have achieved important results in developing non-monotonic
    reasoning systems.
    Requirements
    ============
    Only non-Italian citizens (from within European Community as well
    as from outside) are allowed *****bmit. The required qualification
    for being eligible for the program is a Master''s Degree, or
    equivalent. A three-year degree is not sufficient.

    Ph D Student Scholarship In Database XML
    A PhD scholarship supported by Australian Research Council is available in the area of Database/XML in the School of Computer and Information Science, the University of South Australia. The scholarship has 25000 AUD of living allowance per annum for three years and has the tuition fee of the successful applicant paid by the university.
    Successful applicants will be working in the area of query processing, data integration, or view updates of XML data.
    Applicants are expected to meet the following requirements:
    1. have done a master''s degree (or honors degree) in computer science,
    mathematics, engineering, or possibly in other related areas;
    Master-by-Coursework applicants who have done a research project of
    at least 18 units (full time half year or equivalent) and had
    publications will also be considered;
    2. have got a Distinction average (>=80%) (or equivalent) in both
    bachelor''s and honours (master) study;
    3. (if English is not your first language) have a recent IELTS (academic)
    overall score of 7 with a minimum of 6.0 in all sub scores. The equivalent
    TOFEL score is internet test 100, computer test 250, or paper test 600.
    4. Applicants who meet above requirements and have publications will be
    considered first.

    The University College Dublin, ranked 108th internationally and located in the dynamic and exciting city of Dublin, Ireland, is seeking to recruit a masterõ?Ts candidate to conduct research in the field of laser scanning data storage and manipulation. The position is funded by a grant from National Digital Research Centre and will involve the hosting, querying and analysing of three-dimensional laser scanning point clouds in an Oracle Spatial 11g Database Management System. The primary responsibility will be the creation of a Graphical User Interface.
    The position provides a gross salary of õ,ơ18,000 per year for 16 months. The candidate would ideally begin in early January.
    Main responsibilities include the following:
    * Developing a graphical user interface
    * Coding for the implementation of octree, R-tree, and related techniques in Oracle Spatial 11g in a pc environment
    * Contributing to all interim and final reports
    The candidate should have a bachelorõ?Ts degree in Computer Science and a strong interest in one or more of the following fields: database management systems, spatial data handling, laser scanning data storage and manipulation. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Computer Science program under the direction of Dr. Michela Bertolotto and co-advised through Civil Engineering under the direction of Dr. Debra Laefer.
    The successful candidate is expected to attend and participate in the PIõ?Ts Dr. Laeferõ?Ts weekly laboratory meetings for her larger Urban Modelling Group. In ad***ion, the researcher will perform certain limited administrative and dissemination functions in support of the project and the PIõ?Ts. These functions may include but are not limited to presenting posters and conference papers, contributing to related funding proposals, and identifying background source material.
    Proficiency in English and programming experience in Java or GML are expected. Strong system skills, as well as experience with real-life deployments, are a plus.
