    Feyenoord Rotterdam 2 Bayern 2
Elber strikes again as Bayern win point

Bayern's two previous Champions League fixtures in Holland were not necessarily the current holders' finest outings. In 1995's semi-final they were thrashed 5-2 by Ajax Amsterdam, while the year before last PSV Eindhoven ran out 2-1 winners. But the Munich outfit were not destined to return home empty handed this time.
Giovane Elber fired another brace on Wednesday evening to secure an important point in Bayern's quest to defend their European crown. The Brazilian struck in the 13th and 50th minutes, first to put Bayern in front and then to equalise a deficit, taking his total to seven in his last three games for the Munich giants. Half way through the first group stage in this year?Ts Champions League, Bayern remain undefeated on five points.

Unusually for Ottmar Hitzfeld, the Bayern coach chose not to change a winning team and began with the same formation which had started against VfB Stuttgart. The game opened quietly, Bayern true to their tactics of breaking from a solid defence and the home side determined not to fall into the counter-attacking trap.

It was something of a bolt from the blue when in the 13th minute Elber turned sharply onto a blocked Pablo Thiam effort from close range and steered the ball home, albeit with the assistance of a massive deflection which left home keeper Edwin Zoetbier stranded.

Feyenoord wasted no time in putting Oliver Kahn under pressure, but the German captain was equal to the challenge, first turning Pierre van Hooijdonk's low drive onto a post when unsighted, then beating away an attempted clearance by Pablo Thiam from the ensuing corner.

The home side now came more and more into the game, with Bayern increasingly pressed back into their own half. It came as no great surprise when Feyenoord equalised after 39 minutes, the unmarked van Hooijdonk taking Collen's cross on the volley and smahing the ball past Kahn.

Shortly before the interval Elber then spurned a superb opportunity to put his side back in front, as he lobbed Zoetebier but could not place his shot. Jon Dahl Tomasson then showed the way, putting the Dutch side 2-1 up with a low drive after van Hooijdonk?Ts headed lay off.

"We all but gave up after going in front. We are not mobile enough and in defence wê?Tre standing off our man. The Dutch are not undeservedly in the lead," an angry Franz Beckenbauer commented during the break.

Hitzfeld clearly needed to make a change, and in the event it turned out to be an inspired one, as Owen Hargreaves ran out for the second half in place of Pablo Thiam. Hargreaves has recently hit the first bad patch of his senior career, being dropped from the full England squad and not even making the Bayern substitutê?Ts bench on occasion.

But the enforced break seemed to have done the youngster good, as he immediately stamped his authority on the defensive midfield area and at once began to close down the space through which Feyenoord had been roaming so freely in the last 25 minutes of the first period. Bayern generally looked tighter and more up for the physical challenge in the second half, and indeed levelled the scores with only five minutes on the clock after the interval.

And again it was Elber, continuing his recent brilliant run of form, who fired home his second of the evening. Claudio Pizarro, who enjoyed an excellent game, popping up on both sides of the park and staying mobile throughout, played a nicely weighted ball to the right edge of the area, for Elber to blast home off the near post.

For a time the equaliser stunned the home side and Bayern might have taken the lead two minutes later with a glorious opportunity carved out by Sergio for Thorsten Fink. However, the midfielder?Ts curling lob was marginally wide. Sergio himself was then unlucky to see his own curler go past the post after good work by Pizarro.

The Dutch side, for whom a victory was a must, began to find a way back into the match, largely through Bayern?Ts uncharacteristic defensive nervousness confronted with the dangerous duo of van Hooijdonk and Tomasson. The game developed into an end-to-end battle with half-chances for both sides.

Perhaps the best of these fell to the visitors, as the outstanding Hargreaves began to find time to go forward and released Pizarro with a glorious crossfield ball, splitting the tiring Feyenoord defence in the 85th minute. But the Peruvian marksman was out of luck, as he had been in front of goal all evening, and the chance came to nothing.

There was one incident late in the game which may yet cause further repercussions, as Paulo Sergio narrowly avoided being struck by a missile thrown from the Feyenoord end as he shaped to take a corner. The referee took the object and reported to the Fifa match official - he will doubtless also be mentioning the knife blade Oliver Kahn was reported to have found in his area at the beginning of the match too.

Bayern then survived a scare right on full time as Robert Kovac appeared to deflect the ball with his hand in a challenge with van Hooijdonk after a corner. But nothing was given and Bayern secured a hard-fought point, a deserved one too, on the basis of a much improved second half performance and the presence in the team of the one truly world-class player on the field in Giovane Elber.
