SLANG

Slang is a lively and complex form of language, interesting to linguists not only for it's forms but for the reactions many people have in both disregarding and accepting slang. Slang often arises as a form of in-group communication and attempt to identify with one's friends, family, social class, occupation, ethnic group, or people of the same age. Slang can be a kind of private language devised to keep out the unwanted or to test exactly who is a member of a certain group. Slang usually provides an alternative vocabulary which refers to standard language. Thus boob tube and idiot box entered the English language after television, and to nuke followed to microwave. These slang terms, as well as many others, tend to provide new and catchy alternatives which are full of connotations and cultural associations pertaining to the specific era. It can also be a kind of shorthand, an informal style of speaking or writing that raises a feeling or emotion about how things are being said. Most slang has a brief time of popularity, only lasting as long as the particular generation which is currently using it, however, some slang terms may last for many generations, thus being passed down (e.g. the slang word "cool" began as a common slang term in the 1950's and is still quite common today). Some slang words become widely used by many people and end up becomming a part of the standard language. Slang often incorporates elements of the jargons of special interests groups (e.g. professional, sport, regional, crimimal, drug, etc...) Slang words often come from foreign languages or are of a regional nature. Many people use slang expressions rather than standard language to define who they are and how they feel about themselves.

Some examples of Slang :
- Chill out : calm down
- What's up : what's happening
- The bomb : very good
- To get the message : to understand somebody tell you
- To good to be true : hard to believe

Some examples of Slang :
- Chill out : came down <--- Chill out là calm down, cool down chứ "came down" là cái quái gì ? tính chui xuống hầm hố nào hay sao ?-
What's up : what's happening <--- chính xác là slang, 1 kiểu chào hỏi thân mật như " how are u, how u doing, howdy " chứ không phải là 1 câu hỏi " what's happening?"
- The bomb : very good <--- không hiểu ?!?
- To get the message : to understand somebody tell you <--- không hiểu nốt ?!? nếu ai gọi tới nhà tớ hỏi kiếm ông chú mà him không có nhà, tớ vẫn nói " Can I get any messages ?" Chẳng ai nghĩ tớ hỏi " Can I understand somebody tell ya?"
- To good to be true : hard to believe <--- "TOO good to be true" em giai ạ, với lại nó là idiom chứ không phải slang.

Đồng ý với chị CU TI.Nếu mà mình sai,có người khác tốt bụng họ dành ra chút thời giờ sữa sai cho mình thì chắc là không ai nỡ phiền lòng đâu.Nếu là tui thì tui còn cám ơn nữa là khác à.
Tui thấy anh bạn zero có cái tư tưởng nguy hiểm quá.Nếu có ai đó ra chổ công cộng mà nói năng bậy bạ,mà hổng có ai sữa thì mai mốt lỡ có thói quen như vậy thì phiền.Giống như là con nít học nói vậy à,nó nói bậy,phát âm bậy mà người lớn hổng sữa,lớn lên nó nói ngọng...hihihi...hổng biết đổ thừa ai đây à.
Mà ngôn ngữ là cái chuyện phức tạp,nhất là khi nói cái chuyện ngữ nghĩa.Nói nghĩa gì thì phải đặt trong hoàn cảnh nào,phát âm ra làm sao,ngữ nghĩa ra làm sao...Ôi thôi bao nhiêu là chuyện rắc rối.Đừng nói là cử nhân anh văn gì hết ráo (cái chuyện chuyên môn ngôn ngữ thì họ hổng khác gì mới học vỡ lòng) ngay cả mấy vị giáo sư đối với cái chuyện dịch thuật,ngữ nghĩa cũng là cái chuyện nan giải (gần đây thì tui có đọc mấy cái bài "chửi lộn" của mấy vị khi nói về bản dịch Mĩ Học (Hegel) của Phan Ngọc).Phan Ngọc là người có uy tín như thế nào trong lĩnh vực dịch thuật thì chắc là ai cũng biết rùi,vậy mà có khi còn nhầm (tui nhấn mạnh có khi).
Đối với cái chuyện đúng sai ở trên thì tui hổng dám có ý kiến.Tại vì tui hổng hiểu mấy cái Slang đó nghĩa gì?Nếu mà bạn Fini chịu khó giải thích thêm về cách sử dụng của chúng (như hoàn cảnh sử dụng chẳng hạn) thì tui cảm ơn lắm (học thêm được vài từ mới mà).

Tui nhớ hồi tui đi học mấy năm đầu ở đại học.Có mấy cha nội giảng viên,hổng biết hiểu biết của mấy vị đó cao siêu thế nào mà giảng về mấy khái niệm và các định nghĩa kinh điển làm tui nghe thấy nóng lạnh.Chắc là kinh điển kiểu của mấy vị ấy (hổng có giống sách vở gì hết trọi,hay là họ tưởng sinh viên là một đám ngu đần thì tui hổng chắc).Có mấy cha như vậy đi dạy học thì thật là đáng sợ,hổng kể bản thân tui mà còn bạn bè tui,rồi mấy thế hệ trước và sau tui cũng đều tưởng bậy,dạy bậy hết ráo!Đúng là nguy hiểm quá!

what's up = how are you (in formal situation) and equal to what's happening (in informal situation)
VD3 : chill down đúng là calm down, viết lộn thôi mà....
VD4 : the bomb
when someone do good things or do an excellent job, we should compliment them like this : "you're the bomb" (It means that you're pretty well, you're excellent )
VD5 : too good to be true , đúng đó là idiom đó, ghép vào slang luôn mà, ...

There are many different types of slang that exist. Here is a list of a few different types:
õ? Euphemistic - a pleasant name for something unpleasant
õ? Pejorative õ?" insulting
õ? Clique õ?" used by a small exclusive group of people
õ? Fashion õ?" slang commonly connected with fashion
õ? Media õ?" media-type slang
õ? Technological õ?" slang that has been created from the world of technology
õ? Work-place jargon õ?" created to add humour or liveliness to the workplace
õ? Historical õ?" slang that has an historical link
õ? Imported õ?" from abroad (for example, USA by television)
õ? Absorbed õ?" words that small groups say and other groups start to use them
Examples of Slang

Tiredness

Drink

Drug-Related

Politically Correct
Vertically Challenged (small), Folically Challenged (bald, lack of hair), Intellectually Challenged (õ?othickõ??), Differently abled (disabled), MATS (more able challenged students)
Jobs
These are all examples of euphemistic slang (something pleasant for something unpleasant, remember?)
Transparent Materials Operative (window cleaner), Hygiene Maintenance Personnel (cleaner), Recyclement Disposal Position (bin man), After Life Entry Facilitator (funeral director).
Notice that this type of slang is used to create a humorous effect and does so with extreme exaggeration.
