Classic Black Metal Albums The 90's
Deicide ; Deicide [1990]Satanic Death that oozed evilness like blood dripping from a cleaved limb. Vocalist Glen Benton not only freaked the world with his self-mutilation brand of an inverted cross on his forehead, he also possessed a vocal delivery unlike anything previously heard. Nothing about this album made easy listening. It was ruthless, grotesque and relentless.
Samael ; Worship Him [1991]Like, Tiamat, Beherit and Rotting Christ, this debut was nothing special but came at a time when nothing else came close to matching the evil menace, discordant drones and satanic undertones etched within the music. This was another of those bands who no one could predict what future lay ahead. This was the year Mayhem vocalist 'Dead' committed suicide.
Burzum ; Burzum [1992]If 'True Norwegian Black Metal' had to be epitomised then this album or Dark Thrones, Under A Funeral Moon, would come into play. Burzum is the work of a genuine lunatic whose mental state is less than normal. Out of all the Black Metal bands you could mention only Burzum transformed fantasy to fact. Of course you had your church burners and grave desecrators but there wasn't many murderers. For all that the music found here was fitting to the legend. Cold, bleak and dark as a monk's colon. To think the depraved mind that was Varg Vikernes was probably not aware of the foul deeds that were to transpire in the coming years.
Dark Throne ; A Blaze in the Northern Sky [1992]After a Death Metal start the leopard changed its spots and as if by magic appeared as the new Black Metal gods of Norway. With the controversial ramblings of Neo-Nazi connotations and evil doings up north the stage was set for the second wave of Black Metal. This album is cited by some as the best Dark Throne have produced. The music is less straightforward and embraces a wider range of moods, which the band would soon cast aside in favour of a more basic formula.
Samael ; Blood Ritual [1992]From a monotone debut to an intensely dark yet melodic second album which had a sound pretty much unique. This hinted of the trademark sound the band were to be distinguished by and in the annals of Black Metal classics this is up with the best of them.
Immortal ; Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism [1992]Immortal trample across the Norwegian landscape like a stag with its balls on fire. Unlike the debut from Samael who showed little of what they were capable of, Immortal oozed class and given the low production this is an incredible debut. Such was the masterly songwriters who emerged from Norway making this country the leaders of a new age in extremity.Emperor Drummer Bard G Eithun [faust] stabbed to death a raving homo***ual in the same year.
Emperor ; Emperor/ Enslaved ; Hordanes Land split cd [1993]Without doubt the most influential split albums ever released. The Norwegian horde had finally shown their talons with Emperor creating the greatest selection of modern Black Metal songs you will ever here, and that includes anything by Cradle of Filth. The Enslaved could not match their brothers for musical brilliance but the songs aired here had enough originality and darkly charm to guarantee them a future.
Dark Throne ; Under a Funeral Moon [1993]Another fine example of 'True Norwegian Black Metal' came in the frozen riffs of this one-dimensional collection of utterly cold songs which either left the listener feeling rather ill or enshrouded in devilmania. As Black Metal albums go, this must rate as one of the best and certainly Dark Thrones finest hour.
Immortal ; Pure Holocaust [1993]If you thought Dark Throne were totally insane then this ****er of a release would have made you think again. This was the awakening of the trademark hyper speed drum work of which Immortal are renowned. The desolate atmosphere, primitive mood and breakneck songs made this a true Black Metal Classic. This was also the year Mayhem guitarist Euronymous was stabbed to death by the completely insane Varg Vilkernes alias Count Grishnatch. A ridiculous name for a sad git.
Rotting Christ ; Thy Mighty Contract [1993]The Greeks have never had anything to shout about when it comes to Extreme Metal but Rotting Christ is an exception to the rule. Starting as a Death Metal band the mutation into Black Metal cult status soon prevailed with the release of this definitive opus. It embraced a unique sound and some explosive albeit primitive Black Metal music.
Marduk ; Those Of The Unlight [1993]This band have never failed to shudder the bones with their own brand of ghastly Black Metal. The idea is to play like rabid wolves and that about sums the band up. This is their most melodic album and contains some fine moments.
Cradle of Filth ; The Principle of Evil Made Flesh [1994]It was a long time coming but England's wait for a new Black Metal monster was over. Cradle of Filth burst onto the scene with a blistering album that deserved the attention they got. Dark and atmospheric, killer songs and a vocalist who sounded like he was being shredded alive.
Samael ; Ceremony of Opposites [1994]The simplistic nature of this album makes its brilliance all the more noteworthy. No guitar solo's, no elaborate arrangements and no over the top keyboards. Samael had come up with a melodic, dark and hypnotic set of songs that were both unique and fresh to the ears. The songs did not transgress easily to the live stage but on album they were massive heavy chunks of guitar based Black Metal.
Mayhem ; De Mysteris Dom Sathanas [1994]It was a long time in coming. Many of the songs aired on this album were years old and the introduction of ex-Tormentor vocalist Attila Cezar altered the Mayhem sound to those who were familiar with it in the first place. Enigmatic vocalist Euronymous was dead. Thankfully for the band not many people were familiar with the original vocalist and this reborn version of the band emerged stronger and more credible than before. This was an album of pure quality, of desolate evil and cold malevolence. The band would never surpass this release and it stands as one of the greatest Black Metal albums of all time.
Abigor ; Berwustung/ Invoke the Dark Age [1994]Austrian Black Metal gods who have ceaselessly released albums seething with bile and Satanic chaos. This is another of those are bands who have resisted the glamour of the mainstream in favour of a more mystical ugly image. The music is fast, sometimes majestic and always primitive in texture.
Satyricon ; Dark Medieval Times [1994]Course, archaic and desolate. This is how I describe this instantly Norwegian in sound release. The long drawn out hymns to the dark one are genuine ad***ions to the legend of Norwegian Black Metal. Never a band that would ascend to the pinnacle of the genre, they still however maintained a steady rise in notoriety in years to follow.
Emperor ; In The Nightside Eclipse [1995]Like being struck by lightning, such was the impact of this album. It is without question the greatest modern Black Metal album you will ever hear. Like Slayers 'Reign in Blood' or Venoms 'Black Metal', it was a definitive masterpiece of the times. The advent of symphonic majestic Black Metal had arrived in all its splendour.
Carpathian Forest ; Through Chasm, ****s and Titan Woods [1995]Melodic Celtic Frost influenced Norwegian Black Metal with a macabre atmosphere and raw sound. The likes of Covenant were very similar in texture although Carpathian Forest were less cold and more melodic. As I mentioned, the Celtic Frost comparisons are instantly apparent.
Gehenna ; First Spell [mcd]Gehenna ; Through the Veils Of Darkness [1995]With the mcd gaining the band a reputation in the underground it wasn't long before Cacophonous added the Norwegians to their growing rooster of Black Metal acts. Gehenna were more subtle than Emperor but utilised the same keyboard effect to create atmospheric Black Metal through varied speeds and aggression. This was the bands greatest album.
Behemoth ; Sventevith [storming the Baltic] [1995]Polish Black Metal ripping through a pagan holocaust of raw guitars and atmospheric arrangements. This is a fast yet thoughtful album recorded on a next to nothing budget and when it comes to Black Metal that can sometimes help capture the passion of the genre. Behemoth, like Emperor has since strayed into a more Death Metal field.
Sigh ; Infidel Zombie [1995]Unique and energetic Black Metal from Japan whose first album 'Scorn Defeat' was released on the Death Like Silence Label run by Euronymous. This Second release is far more bizarre with odd orchestral parts leaping out of the Venomesque arrangements. The band would go on to more peculiar things without discovering the success they deserved.
Enslaved ; Frost [1995]The bands second album and the one that all the rest would ultimately sound like. The fusion of ultra fast parts and epic slower sections is the trademark of the Enslaved sound. Viking metal taken a step further so to speak. Although the band would release many more albums this is by far their most accomplished to date.Gorgoroth ; Pentagram [1995]Putrid, vile and compelling music from this Norwegian band. Again capturing that classic Norse sound of raw guitars and chaotic vocals. The only album worth getting from a band who went on to lesser things.
Satyricon ; Nemesis Divina [1996]A triumph in Norwegian Black Metal and one that the band have never been able *****rpass to date. The track 'Mother North' has to be the finest song the band have written and one of the finest Norwegian Black Metal tracks set to CD. The pure energy, enchanted atmosphere and fusion of ethereal and violent rhythms are a master stroke of extreme musical, creativity. The harsh desolate feel of snow-glazed forests can be felt throughout the seven tracks. If you don't own this then you are either a Parson or Deep sea diver with no desire to be enthralled by dark hymns.
Covenant ; In Times Before the Light [1996]Brooding raw Norwegian Black Metal with a keyboard backing and cold atmosphere. This is a far cry to the revamped band of today with their mainstream style. The Covenant of old was a funeral march to purgatory with melodic songs set to bombastic arrangements coupled with those stereotype darlek vocals.
Arcturus ; Aspera Hiems Synmfonia [1996]Norwegian Black Metal with an emphasis on majestic if not strange arrangements. Vocalist Garm of Ulver splits his vocals into clean and harsh styles to dominate the Erie music. The songs are up-beat in parts yet possess all the traits of Norwegian Black Metal both in atmosphere and feel. This revealed just how artistic and pioneering the Norwegians had become and still are.
Bal Sagoth ; Starfire Burning.. [1996]From a rough and raw debut of pagan metal to Barbarian metal in every sense of the word. Bal Sagoth had formulated their own identity on this album and this blend of over the top keyboards and fast momentous sword and sandal songs would be the catalyst from which all future albums would grow.
Impaled Nazarene ; Latex Cult [1996]Sado masowhores from Finland bursting forth with a hybrid metallic monstrosity of Black Metal and hardcore. This was pure Karmageddon. Their Black Metal roots on this release are only noticeable through the desolate vocals as the music just rockets along under a hugely evident bass rumbles. Brain lacerating stuff!
Cradle of Filth ; Dusk And Her Embrace [1996]A band who have risen to commercialdom without forsaking the extremity of their roots. I can only think of few bands who have achieved this. One being Slayer and the other are Napalm Death. This album once again fuses gothic theatrics with hard abrasive music and those distinctive vocals of Dani Filth. One can belittle the band but only a fool can fail to show them respect. After the internal record label disputes which ended with the compromise, Vempire mcd being release on Cacophonous the band now emerged on Music For Nations with this gruesome display of vampyric Black Metal. Fast songs with a melody and discord bouncing off unearthly vocals is just what Cradle of Filth are all about.
Dimmu Borgir ; Stormblast [1996]The album that pushed them closer to that lucrative deal with Nuclear Blast. It displayed the characteristics of the mighty music they would soon record but the atmosphere and rawness of the sound held the whole album firm in that desolate Norwegian Black Metal din. A truly inspiring release.Old Mans Child ; Born of the Flickering [1996]This band like Borknagar and Covenant were the new breed of Norwegian Black Metal bands creating that same distinctive sound pioneered by the likes of Dark Throne and Emperor. The abrasiveness was less full on and a more melodic factor embraced the music. Still primitive in tone and very much empowered by that ability to write fresh Black Metal songs based on a very tried and tested theme.Marduk ; Heaven Shall Burn [1996]Marduk are similar to Slayer in the way they have never compromise the very soul of their music. Fast, unrelenting noise is where Marduk started and it will be no doubt the style they will end with. Black Metal has had its share of fast bands but sooner or later they slow things down and usually get lost in the process. Listen to this album and be amazed at the skill these Swedish lunatics embellish throughout the frantic half-hour of severely intense Black Metal.Dimmu Borgir ; Enthrone Darkness Triumphant [1997]This was the album that propelled yet another Norwegian band into the Black Metal hall of fame. It seems the all-encompassing might of the northmen was to remain a while longer. Catchy symphonic Black Metal with a brutal edge was the key to this bands success. The songs were memorable and never strayed from the underlining ethics of the genre.Emperor ; Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk [1997]How do you follow an album like, In The Nightside Eclipse? In much the same way Slayer and Celtic Frost endeavoured *****rpass a massively received album with one surviving and the other humiliated. Emperor are band whose quality carried them through and this release is a roller coaster ride across extremity. The incredible thing about the awesome display of musicianship is the band make it all sound so effortless. It is as if they have an extra arm to keep up with the musical holocaust.Ancient ; Mad Grandiose Blood Fiends [1997]A persevering Norwegian band that have been around since the early nineties who have their own sound and a vast array of talent. Ancient were the first band to be signed by a big label [Metal Blade] , but have never risen above their expectations. The music is varied clean Black Metal and this album is a killer. Of the 5 albums the band have release this is the best. There is a killer cover of Merciful Fates 'Black Funeral' by the way.Ulver ; The Madrigal Of The Night [1997]After two albums of totally different styles. The first being a more elegant yet typical Norwegian Black Metal opus and the other a series of odd chanting music. This third album blazed forth in a frantic fireball of fast uncompromising Blackness. A real eye opener and the end to the bands play on styles. Ulver are now a musical beast lost up its own arse.Cradle of Filth ; Cruelty and the Beast [1998]Love 'em or hate 'em, Cradle of Filth are the greatest nineties Black Metal band. This album was swathed in a deep gothic cloak but the pure extremity of the vocals and atmosphere reminded everyone this band had not sold out to nobody. For sure the rock star bollocks infuriated the underground, which spawned them, but nothing could take away the grandiose brilliance of this album.
Dimmu Borgir ; Spiritual Black Dimensions Blast [1999]Confirming their dominance over the Black Metal genre along with Cradle of Filth and Emperor, this album had the big budget sound, the quality songs and dark imagery to establish Dimmu Borgir as part of the select few.
Immortal ; At The Heart Of Winter [1999]Still retaining the trademark guitar sound everything was perfect for this release apart from the ceaseless speed attacks every one expected. Immortal had come of age so to speak and crafted an album of supreme musical heaviness complete with catchy songs and a much slower approach. This was Immortals best album since 'Pure Holocaust'.
Graveland ; Immortal Pride [1999]One of the last so called 'True' Black Metal bands left on the planet. This Polish one-man blitzkrieg has been churning out album after album of raw, desolate and at times utterly hideous [in a brilliant fashion] music since the days of the most embryonic Norwegian acts. This album is by far the most accessible due to the heavy Bathory [Hammerheart era] atmospheres seeping from the bombastic/ epic material. To remain a cult underground act for so long doesn't necessarily mean you're ****e. It can also mean you really have a deep desire to stay away from the trappings of commercial hype and camera posing. So there you have it. There have been others you may feel I should have mentioned and newer ad***ions I have missed out. All in all I think this is a comprehensive look down the years to a genre that has given so much to metal. And we can only wonder at what is to come. Black Metal is here to stay.
