Fashion Trend in Hanoi and HCM City
What is the difference between fashion in Ha Noi and HCM City? My friends asked me that question one day. I didn''t know how to answer because I had never given it much thought before. My sister Thuy, who moved there with her family five years ago, gave me her opinion.
"Girls in Ha Noi appear to like more reserved and conservative clothing, while girls in HCM City seem to like modern and comfortable styles," she says.
Thuy thinks the differences can be attributed to the characteristics of each city. HCM City is lively and modern, while Ha Noi is an ancient city with nearly 1,000 years of history, she says. Also, she adds, HCM City is Viet Nam''s biggest commercial and industrial centre so women there are exposed to the latest trends in fashion.
Still not satisfied with the answer, I sought the opinions of professionals, and in doing so spoke to several fashion designers who play a role in setting fashion trends in the country. Vu Thu Giang, a famous fashion designer who owns her own label and two shops in Ha Noi and HCM City, doesn''t completely agree with my sister''s assessment. For her, fashion in Ha Noi and fashion in HCM City are distinct because of the difference in climates and people''s characters.
"There are four seasons in Ha Noi, while HCM City has only two: the rainy and dry seasons," Giang explains. So, she says, Hanoians tend to have more warm clothes in their wardrobes than those who live in the south. "Also, people in the South seem to like trendy clothing, while people in Ha Noi appear to prefer more conservative clothing."
