Okie, nhân tiện vừa mới phỏng vấn và trượt VEF xong, tớ quyết định "release" cái SOP của tớ cho mọi người để viết cái mới . Chủ yếu là để tham khảo và học tập lẫn nhau, ko có mục đích gì hơn! Quan trọng nhất khi viết SOP theo tớ là "JUST BE YOURSELF!". Chúc tất cả những người đang kiếm tìm học bổng như tớ may mắn!
To Vietnam Education Foundation:
Two years ago, the school of Business Administration, International Studies, and Tourism (BAIST) was set up within Hanoi University of Foreign Studies. This was the first and is still the only one school in Vietnam that uses English as its official instruction language. Since this was a completely different method of teaching, it was very challenging to me when I was recruited as one of the key lecturers for the school. I was responsible for coordinating and teaching two courses in my first semester: Statistics for Business and Applications of Calculus. It was in fact my greatest challenge since I had to prepare everything from scratch for both courses without any teaching assistants, including creating lecture notes, assignments, tutorials and exams, marking students?T work, developing and maintaining course websites, etc. Despite many difficulties in the founding stage, the school strengthened as we moved on.
Based on this preliminary success, next year, the university will open the first computer science school in Vietnam that instructs students all in English. Thanks to my profound contribution to and my invaluable experience when working for BAIST, I have been assigned to be one of the founding academic staff of
the new computer science school. Having involved in the academic environment for quite a long period of time, I have developed in me a strong passion for teaching, a sincere concern for students and a burning desire to reach for excellence both in research and lecturing despite the high level of hard work required. Since I wish to devote my life to the pursuit of the cause of education, obtaining a PhD degree is not only my constant objective intention but also a subjective prerequisite for this profession. Having a chance to study at one of the top graduate schools in the United States with leading professors and outstanding research fellows will therefore provide me with a rigid knowledge foundation as well as a broader vision of science and technology. This is my first reason for applying for a graduate study in the United States under VEF fellowship program.
Since the objective of VEF is to help Vietnam build excellence in science and technology, working and cooperating with VEF will build up a great prospect of an improvement in standards of science and technology in Vietnam. Applying for a graduate study under VEF fellowship will provide me with an excellent opportunity to get to know other outstanding Vietnamese scholars. This will establish essential links and potential collaboration in the future among VEF fellows. I believe that with the collective strength and the devotion to the development of our country, our generation will be capable of making
the technological revolution in Vietnam a success. With significant support from VEF through other programs such as seminar programs and centers of excellence, such a revolution will have a greater chance of being actualized. This is my second reason for applying for VEF fellowship.
In the rapidly changing world of information technology, the need to reach for international standards in this area becomes more critical than ever for Vietnam to escape from poverty and advance the national economy growth. Understanding the importance of this issue, I decided to choose computer science as the major for my bachelor degree. My main research area of interest is finding optimal algorithms for NP-Completeness problems. NPCompleteness is considered one of the most challenging areas of computer science since it requires a
profound background of theoretical mathematics. Each NP-Completeness problem is normally defined as an intractable problem and is always of great research interest since solutions to this kind of problems will lead *****bstantial applications in reality. During my vacation work with Dr. Prabhu Manyem in summer 2002, we worked on the problem of Bin-packing optimization. This was the most frustrating experience for me since my paper based on this work failed to be admitted for presentation at the 11th Australian Computer Association?Ts conference despite the immense amount of effort I had put into it. However, this failure was in fact an encouragement for me to reinforce my interest in this area. It motivated me to put every little effort in absorbing the content of the course ?~Limits of
Computing?T (theory of computation and computer intractability) that I had a chance to take in the next semester. Being the top student of this subject in my year, and later the teaching assistant, research assistant and supervisor for the course, I believe this is an area in which I can develop my potential to
the full. This solid foundation will help me in my future research projects.
With the support of VEF, I will have a great opportunity to get into one of the top computer science schools in the United States, which lays the first brick on the route leading to my success in my career. A fellowship from VEF will also give me the comfort to focus on studying without having to work *****stain a living. I believe that with these favorable con***ions, together with my determination in achieving my goals, I will be able to actualize my dream of becoming a professional researcher and lecturer. This third reason also concludes my application for VEF fellowship.
