Summary:The wide area wireless network (IEEE 802.16 WMAN) supports integrated services such as constant bit rate voice, variable bit rate video, high speed FTP and low speed www data. Efficient resource management in such network is a real challenge because of QoS requirements of integrated services and the error prone nature of the radio channel. In this paper, we mainly focus on the efficient packet transmission mechanism in such network. We propose an efficient channel prediction scheme which combines the handshake probing and prediction together to probe the channel state before transmission. Based on the maximum tolerant BER of different services, channel state is classified into three different states and an adaptive packet transmission scheme for all services under different channel states is introduced. The performance of the proposed schemes are evaluated and the results verified by using extensive simulations.

Summary:Third-generation mobile systems are driven by the vision of information at any time, at any place, in any form. Research efforts have been aligned with efforts in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and other bodies to find standards and recommendations which ensure that mobile communications of the future have access to multimedia capabilities and service quality similar to the fixed network. A formal request by the ITU-R for submission of candidate radio transmission technology (RTTs) for IMT-2000 was distributed by the ITU, with a closing date of June 1998. The development of radio interface specifications for third-generation mobile communication systems, such as IMT-2000, has been hampered by intellectual property right and international trade disputes. The growing rewards from winning or to some degree, controlling the outcome of the standardization process has made reaching consensus on standards much more difficult. Though the road was rough, a comprehensive set of radio interface specifications, incorporating the flexibility required to seamlessly evolve current mobile networks towards IMT-2000, was approved on November 5, 1999
