Summary:This paper presents the model of a static synchronous series compensator with the simulation package EMTP RV. The model uses a neutral point clamped (NPC) voltage source converter (VSC) to generate a high quality waveform. The model operation is verified with two types of controllers: direct and indirect to validate their mode of operation. Results of simulation tests for step changes in injected reactance, load variation and balancing of the DC capacitor voltages are presented

Summary: This paper describes a switching level simulation model for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) with EMTP, which can be useful for analyzing the dynamic interaction between the SSSC and the power transmission system. A detailed simulation model with EMTP was developed to verify the SSSC operation with control system, and the increasing capability of power transmission for a typical one-machine infinite-bus system. The simulation results of the developed model are compared with the experimental results from a scaled model of 2 kVA rating for evaluating the whole system operation.
