    Abstract
    We demonstrate coherent demodulation of optical multilevel (M-ary) phase-shift-keying (PSK) signals. Since the carrier phase is estimated accurately through digital signal processing after phase-diversity homodyne detection, the system performance is highly tolerant to the carrier phase noise. By off-line bit-error-rate measurements using distributed feedback semiconductor lasers with linewidths of 150 kHz as a transmitter and a local oscillator, it is shown that binary PSK (M=2), quadrature PSK (M=4), and eight-PSK (M=8) signals are successfully demodulated at the symbol rate of 10 Gsymbol/s.

    Abstract
    Quadrature and demodulation phase errors in a quadrature PSK system cause crosstalk between channels. It is shown that the tracking loop signal-to-noise ratio must be at least 5 dB greater than for PSK to give the same performance.

    Summary: The objective of this work is to point out the advantages offered by the temperature dependent dielectric spectroscopy in frequency domain, as a possible diagnostic tool for power transformer lifetime prediction. Characterization of the insulating oil has been carried out for a wide selection of transformers and their gas concentrations were monitored. The work correlates gas chromatography data to the dielectrometry ones.

    Abstract
    The bit-error rate (BER) performance of multilevel quadrature amplitude modulation with pilot-symbol-assisted modulation channel estimation in static and Rayleigh fading channels is derived, both for single branch reception and maximal ratio combining diversity receiver systems. The effects of noise and estimator decorrelation on the received BER are examined. The high sensitivity of diversity systems to channel estimation error is investigated and quantified. The influence of the pilot-symbol interpolation filter windowing is also considered.

    Abstract
    In this letter, we express the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for carrier phase estimation from a noisy linearly modulated signal with encoded data symbols, in terms of the marginal a posteriori probabilities (APPs) of the coded symbols. For a wide range of classical codes (block codes, convolutional codes, and trellis-coded modulation), these marginal APPs can be computed efficiently by means of the Bahl-****e-Jelinke-Raviv (BCJR) algorithm, whereas for codes that involve interleaving (turbo codes and bit interleaved coded modulation), iterated application of the BCJR algorithm is required. Our numerical results show that when the BER of the coded system is less than about 10-3, the resulting CRB is essentially the same as when transmitting a training sequence.

    Abstract
    The true Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived and evaluated for the estimation of carrier phase of Star 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and can be simply applied to carrier frequency estimation. Different geometries are investigated by varying the ring ratio (RR). For signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) between 6-15 dB, the CRLB with RR=3 is lower than that of Square 16-QAM. A modified phase estimator is presented, which closely follows the new CRLB. Investigation of symbol error performance in short packet length reveals Star 16-QAM to be superior to Square 16-QAM for SNR<13 dB, which is a reasonable operating range for a coded system. Although Square 16-QAM and Star RR=1.8 are optimum for a perfect receiver, when the effect of phase estimation is considered, we find Star RR=3 to be better for SNR below 10 dB.
