One of the main reasons of why Jason left the band

Jason left because no only of his injuries, but also because he wanted to have a more creative role in the band, as well as being restricted from doing lots of side projects, even though he still got to do alot.
To Jason music is his life. He can't live without it. He is a full-fledged born musician. Whether he was in Metallica or not he would have been a musician.

Music is life to the other band members as well, and they put their whole effort into it too. But they have other things as well, which are just as and even more important than music.

You could think of it like this: Lars, Kirk, and James all have 2 wives. Lars is married to Skylar Ulrich and Metallica, Kirk is married to Lani (Leilani?) Hammett and Metallica, and James is married to Francesca Hetfield and Metallica.
Jason has 3 wives. (Or probably 2 now since he got divorced a little while back, but yet probably has a girlfriend, so you can count her as a wife).
One wife: his girlfriend.
One wife: Metallica.
One wife: MUSIC!!!!!


Jason LOVES music. It is his blood.
He is committed to music always, just like when he was in Metallica he was committed 110%, and if he went back again he would be committed 110%.
When the other band members went home they went to their families. Jason had his music.


So now, you can see that Metallica is not just what fills Jason's blood. It wasn't the only music in his life. A great big bit, but only a bit.

That is why he done side projects, to fulfill the other bits of his music life.


Another thing I think why Jason done so many side projects because he couldn't really get the creative role he wanted in Metallica. He was only cre***ed with writing 3 songs, out of a whole 51 Metallica wrote from right back when they done ...And Justice For All. 4 whole albums! Two songs that were released a few years later, and a song for a movie, and he only got to co-write 3 of them!


No offence, but I reckon James and Lars were greedy bastards. They never let him a proper chance to write. They gave Kirk a decent go, he is cre***ed for about half the songs Metallica has wrote since AJFA.
Cliff got a decent share in the cre***s, and as well, when he was in the band they wrote some of the songs alltogether! The whole four of them! Master of Puppets!, Creeping Death!, Damage Inc.! and heaps of songs from Ride The Lighning!

What I think is the worst thing the two of them have done to poor ol' Jase is turning the bass down on him when they recorded AJFA. Although Flemming Rassmussen produced the album, he is really just doing what he is told, so don't blame him for anything. And about sacking him I don't think so, because Flemming is Lars' drum technician, and has been for a LONG time, right up to the present. ('Bulldozer' Bob Szuminsky was the drum tech for the Kill 'Em All for One tour; Metallica themselves produced Ride The Lightning- it says "Produced by Metallica" on the back of the CD jewel case; and Flemming done the Master of Puppets album)


Kirk Hammett was never mean to him. He may have participated in Jason's early 'tallica days of hazing and ridiculous fraternity pranks, and I reckon that was mean, but he always was good to him, but yet that is just Kirk.

So because Jason didn't get a fair go with writing Metallica songs, he wrote his own songs, with other people, and jammed with them.
The other members have done side projects too. Lars has recorded a drum track for <!-- put something here -->, Kirk has played on the 'Spawn' soundtrack, and James done backing vocals on ,<!-- some band --> album, and also sung on the South Park movie. But yet they didn't cre*** for it, and Jason DID get cre*** for his side projects. That did put the other two (not Kirk) off, especially James. Go read their interview with Rob Tannenbaum in the Playboy Magazine April 2001 issue (I don't have a copy, I read it from a web site), and the two are bickering like litte kids in their. Even Lars remarked on the silliness of it (Lars: "I have more serious problems than what those two are bickering about over there"- at the time his was living away from his wife. Shortly after he got back together with her, and they haven't moved apart).


Something that really strikes me about Jason's quitting is that I reckon Cliff Burton's death played a major part in the reasons why he left.
The other three members, especially James and Lars, never fully got over Cliff getting killed. When Jason was recruited they threw **** at him and hazed him to help get over it. Kirk joined in too, but soon left him off. They done the worst thing by turning the bass down on him. (One of the more softer things was running around and telling people that Jason was gay. Jason is hetero***ual, like all of the other members of the band, so that just shows how ludicrous the hazing got.)
Jason had some pretty big shoes to fill, but he proved himself capable.

Something odd about the hazing is that back in 1987, were most of the silly hazing was committed, Metallica did not turn down the bass when they recorded the The $9.98 CD/$5.98 EP: Garage Days re-revisted album. Jason's bass is as clear as a bell on that release, he even has some little solo bits! Compare that to the next year, 1988, and the hazing got much worse. That was when the bass was turned down on him, a huge slap in the face and a great big kick in the arse.

Today Kirk and Lars regret that, quite a bit. Kirk wasn't pleased with the album (not just his parts because he had to rush them before they went to play the Monsters of Rock festival), and Lars stated that the album "sounded like it was recorded in a matchbox". The reason why it sounded so because there was no boom happening, no bass! Just a hum and a feeling the band was tightly packed into a small space with the microphones right next to the instruments, the only depth of sound coming from the effects racks that processed the sound.


Although this was the worst of the hazing, and the level did drop significantly, it never fully ended, because they were never over The Day Beautiful Music Died. James and Lars never let Jason a go at writing a song. 3 times it slipped, but 48 times it didn't.

I have found out that once Jason left the band (take a good note of this), when he quit, the others were freed from Cliff's death. They finally got over it.

Now this leaves a few questions to ponder, and millions of solutions why the others were relieved from the horror of Cliff's fatality.


Some could be- James and Lars used the hazing to get over Cliff, and they could stop only once Jason left
Some could be- Cliff didn't want Jason in the band, so he haunted James and Lars and made them pick on Jason and be arseholes to him, so he would leave
Some could be- Jason joined quite near to when Cliff died, and so whenever Jason was around Lars and James he reminded them of Cliff, and so brought on their worries. Once he was gone they had nothing to represent Cliff's death to them.

The reason Jason became a member of Metallica is because the previous band member got killed, and so obviously couldn't carry out his duties of bass playing, songwriting, and also largely a mentor for the band, which helped them alot to become what they are. Having their originality, individuality, 'all attitude and speed as well as the 'be yourself' attitude. They missed Cliff, and looking at Jason just shows that Cliff isn't with them anymore.

This is my hypothesis to the situation. I fully believe it.

And yet to me even though Cliff is dead and that Jason isn't the same as him, Jason still did retain those feelings and ways of thinking and doing, which is what Cliff taught them. Jason is quoted to "Making sure Metallica thumps harder than ever". So it is still like Cliff is represented in the band, even though Jason blatantly shows that "I'm here 'cause Cliff ain't here".


And even though Jason may have left the band, there is a possibility, and quite a good probability, that he may be back in the band. If Metallica let him free with doing side projects, and wrote heaps more songs with them, then he would be in the band for sure. And if they asked him to rejoin, he still would put in 110%.

Maybe his departure is just a short thing, a learning period for them to help them get over a few problems that were brewing for 15 years. It could be just a cooling off period, to let them all get over it, and then all would be rosy!
Jason believes that everything happens for a reason, and I reckon that there is a big chance that a very simple reason is the answer *****ch a complex situation.

If Metallica can conquer this then they truly are the greatest band of all time! Long Live Metallica!
