The going rate, I think, is what I don''t know at all about. However, it depends, yes, it depends more on the teacher of Vietnamese than the learner of Vietnamese. Why so? The reason is simply simple! If the teacher develops a romantic relationship with the student, the fee is infinitely high - and immeasurable in some special cases. If that is the case, a possible scenario may be that the teacher gets everything for nothing. The teacher can get high fees while enjoying the relationship of a kind that, metaphorically speaking, culminates in the couple becoming ONE, or in what is the ultimate result of love involving the two giving each other what is thought of as the best of them, inside and outside. This relationship may also develop into an eternal one like that which bonds a man and a woman in the name of marriage. In this scenario, money is flowing as if never to stop for a minute.
Aside from this, another possibility is that a one-by-one relationship develops gradually, whereby each time served, each time the student pays an agreed-upon fee according to the Terms of Reference prepared for the teacher. As an example, if the TOA dictates that the teacher, aside from performing the teaching duties, must willingly offer the student something really gratifying that drives him comfortably numb but that drains all of his one-day internal energy. And as this situation may suggest, the fee accummulates as the number of "events" increase. The total sum may get astronomically high if the marginal rate of satisfaction rises rather than decreases.
In a word, the teacher has a virtually exclusive right to manipulate the situation in favor of herself. Take advantage of it! It offers irresistable benefits. You have extra money to complement your income. Beyond that, you have a great chance to practice English or French. But most importantly, you gain yourself a really good time of unleashing your hidden pleasures from the innermost corner of yourself. A combination of money income, uncontrollable pleasures and a chance to teach yourself a vital foreign language should definitely be forgone in any case, (if you have that chance coming to you).
