    History of London, England

By Tim Lambert - Dedicated to Lucinda

    ROMAN LONDON

London was founded by the Romans about 50 AD. Its name is derived from the Celtic word Londinios, which means the place of the bold one. After they invaded Britain in 43 ADthe Romans built a bridge across the Thames. They later decided it was an excellent place to built a port. The water was deep enough for ocean going ships but it was far enough inland to be safe from Germanic raiders. Around 50 AD Roman merchants built a town by the bridge. So London was born. There was not a stone wall around the early settlement but there may have been a ***ch and an earth rampart with a wooden pallisade on top. Then in 61 AD Queen Boudicca led a rebellion against the Romans. Her army marched on London. No attempt was made to defend London. Boudicca burned London but after her rebellion was crushed it was rebuilt. Rich people built houses of stone or brick with tiled roofs but most people lived in wooden houses. By the end of the 2nd century stone wall was erected around London. The wall was 20 feet high. Outside the wall was a ***ch. In the middle of the 3rd century 20 bastions were added to the walls(a bastion was a semi-circular tower projecting from the wall).

The population of Roman London rose to perhaps 45,000, which seems small to us but it was the largest town in Britain. In the centre of the town was the forum. This was a square with shops and public buildings arranged around it. The most important building in the forum was the basilica or ''town hall'' which was 500 feet long and 70 feet high. In London there were brickworks, potteries and glassworks. There were also donkey powered mills for grinding grain to flour and bakeries. London was also an important port with wooden wharves and jetties. Grain and metal were exported and luxury goods were imported. (Things like wine, olive oil, glass, fine pottery, silk and ivory).

Rich citizens had baths in their homes but there were several public baths near the city gates. (Romans went to the baths to socialise not just to keep clean). Most people in the town got their water from wells and used cess pools but there were underground drains to remove rainwater. London also had an ampitheatre, which could hold 8,000 people. Here gladiators were made to fight to the death. ****fighting was also a popular sport.

(cái này thì rất dài nên cứ từ từ, mỗi ngày đọc 1 chút)

    About The Tower Of London
The Tower of London has an intriquing and often bloody history dating back over 900 years. For much of those years it has been a great object of fear, as once taken behind its fortified walls, for many, inside the tower walls would be the last sight they would see on earth again. The tower holds many a secret too, with even unsolved murders of two young princes taking place behind its walls. (ooh, so scary ) Monarchs have lived within the Tower, and monarchs have died within the Tower. Framed members of Court have lost their heads there, along with many notorious villains and traitors alike. It is home to the Crown Jewels of England and also a home to a celebrated colony of 7 Ravens, of which it is said, should they ever desert the tower, the kingdom will fall. However, the birds have had their wings clipped to make flight impossible. A memorial in the moat commemorates some of the ravens that have lived and died at the tower over the years

    About Big Ben
Big Ben is famous the world over for being the giant four faced clock in London, England, but infact its not the name of the clock at all. Big Ben is the name of the giant 14-tonne bell that hangs inside the clock tower and chimes every hour of every day in England. The huge bell was hung in 1858 and named after Sir Benjamin Hall, Chief Commissioner of Works at the time the bell was hung. The bell is the second giant bell to be hung, the first one became cracked during a test ringing. However, the present bell also has a slight crack. Big Ben is the largest clock in Britain and has kept exact time for the nation since May 1859. It has four 23ft (7.5m) dials (one on each face) and the minute hand is 14ft long and made of hollow copper for lightness. In England you can hear Big Ben chiming daily the nation over, either on television news or radio.

Qua cái ảnh cuối cùng, không chỉ nhìn thấy Big Ben mà còn thấy Houses of Parliament (nhà Quốc Hội) ngay sát bên cạn nữa đấy
