The Beatles tape the final appearance on the ABC Television program
"Thank Your Lucky Stars". Recording takes place at Alpha

interviewed by Brian Matthew. Broadcast on April 3. (2325)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). John Lennon records his lead vocal for "Good Morning Good
Morning". Paul adds a lead guitar solo and both John and Paul add
backing vocals. John had decided that he wanted to end the song
with animal sound effects, and asked that they be sequenced in such
a way that each successive animal was capable of scaring or eating
the preceding one. Suitable animal sound effects are found in the
Abbey Road tape library: 'Volume 35: Animals and Bees' and 'Volume
57: Fox-hunt'. Later, ad***ional overdubs are recorded for "Being
For the Benefit of Mr. Kite". Harmonica parts are added by George
Harrison, Ringo Starr, Mal Evans, and Neil Aspinall. Paul adds a
guitar solo and John adds an organ part. (2658)

with the overdubbing of the elaborate sound effects created on
February 20, along with an organ piece played by George Martin and
harmonica parts played by George Harrison and John Lennon. Then
recording begins on "With a Little Help From My Friends". Each

The Beatles perform at the Subscription Rooms, Stroud. The
supporting act is the Rebel Rousers. A poster advertised The
"Sensational" Beatles as "...Liverpool's top vocal and instrumental
group..." and "...stars of Polydor records...". The poster also advised
boys not to wear Teddy Boys, and "Ladies" were advised not to wear
    stiletto heels. (891)
    1963

Want to Hold Your Hand". (2079)
    1964
An important day of filming for "A Hard Day's Night"--the filming
of the movie's climax (the "live television performance" in front
of a studio of screaming fans). One of those fans is Phil Collins.
Four songs are used in the movie, The Beatles performing lip-sync
with their records: "Tell Me Why", "I Should Have Known Better",
"And I Love Her", and "She Loves You". "You Can't Do That" is
    filmed as well, but it will not be included in the final movie;
however, it is shown on the US "Ed Sullivan Show" on May 24. One
shot during "Tell Me Why", looking from the stage towards the
audience, reveals the film's director Richard Lester. (2080)
    1964
After a day of filming, the Beatles go to the Playhouse Theatre to
record a radio segment for the BBC series "Saturday Club", for
broadcast on April 4. The Beatles are interviewed, then they
perform "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby", "I Call Your Name", "I
Got a Woman", "You Can't Do That", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Sure to
Fall (In Love With You)", and "Long Tall Sally". John Lennon did a
separate interview about his book "In His Own Write", for the
program "A Slice of Life". (2081)
    1965
The Beatles continue filming for the movie "Help!", at Twickenham
Film Studios (the movie's working title has not yet been changed
from "Eight Arms to Hold You"). (2328)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Glockenspiel and another organ part are overdubbed onto
"Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite". The "Kite" and "With a Little
Help From My Friends" are mixed in mono. (2662)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko, their Amsterdam bed-in finished, fly to Vienna and
'appear' at a press conference inside a white bag (Bagism and
'total communication' being part of their peace initiative) to
promote their film "Rape". One source claims that, instead of
appearing inside a white bag, they are covered by a white sheet.
["Made a lightning trip to Vienna/ Eating chocolate cake in a bag/
The newspapers said,/ 'She's gone to his head/ They look just like
two gurus in drag'..."--John Lennon]. Commenting upon John's
activities, the 'Daily Mirror' reports that, "...a not inconsiderable
talent...seems to have gone completely off his rocker". (3035)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1961
The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West
Germany. This is the first of 92 straight nights playing at this
club, during which The Beatles will log a staggering 503 hours on
stage. They play seven hours per night on weekdays, eight hours on
weekends (with a 15-minute break each hour). The grueling schedule
will hone their musical skills until, by the time they return to
Liverpool, they will be the best band around. It is during this
visit that Astrid Kirchherr will cut Stu Sutcliffe's hair into the
style destined to become known as the "Beatle haircut". At first,
John and the others laugh heartily at Stu's new hair style, but
with the exception of Pete Best, The Beatles soon adopt the haircut
themselves. Stu Sutcliffe occasionally plays on stage with The
Beatles during this second Hamburg trip. (1114)
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Casbah Coffee Club, Liverpool. (319)
    1963
The Beatles record two radio appearances for later broadcast, both
for the BBC program "Side by Side". Each week the Karl Denver Trio
would host a guest group on the show, opening each show with a duet
version of the song "Side by Side" sung by the Karl Denver Trio and
that show's guest act. Since The Beatles recorded two programs on
the same day, it was decided to record "Side by Side" only once,
using the same version for both programs. For the first radio
show, The Beatles record "I Saw Her Standing There", "Do You Want
to Know a Secret", "Baby It's You", "Please Please Me", "From Me to
You", and "Misery". That show is broadcast on April 22. The
second program, which features the songs "From Me to You", "Long
Tall Sally", "A Taste of Honey", "Chains", "Thank You Girl", and
"Boys", is broadcast on May 13. The recordings are made in Studio
One of BBC Piccadilly Studios, London. (1752)
    1964

    17 years. (2174)
    1965
The Beatles are busy filming scenes for their second movie, "Eight
Arms to Hold You" ("Help!" before it was renamed), at Twickenham
    Film Studios. (2329)
    1965
Release in Sweden of Beatles LP "The Beatles' Greatest Hits"
(Parlophone). A special Swedish release. (3807)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio One, EMI Studios,
London). Under pressure to complete "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts
Club Band", The Beatles record, in one night, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
Hearts Club Band (Reprise)". They tape nine takes of the basic
rhythm track, overdub vocals, percussion, and audience sounds. The
session starts at 7:00 pm and runs until 6:00 am. Take 5 of the
song was released on "The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc two, Track
    12). (2663)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko tape an appearance on Thames TV's "Today" news
program, where they are interviewed by host Eamonn Andrews. John
and Yoko appear from inside a white bag, and they proceed to
discuss their "Bagism" philosophy, good-naturedly responding to
their host's friendly, but fun-poking questions. John and Yoko say
that they are "willing to be the world's clowns" to spread the
message of peace, and that it is especially appropriate since this
is April Fool's Day. They then invite Andrews into the bag with
them. Above their heads is a poster proclaiming "EAMONN PEACE". A
fun time is had by all. [Note: one source claims that John and
Yoko appeared on this program in a bed, not in a bag]. (3037)
    1970
Phil Spector gathers a large orchestral/choral group to record the
lush orchestration for "The Long and Winding Road" and "Across the
Universe" (in Studio One of EMI Studios, London). During the
session, Spector manages to anger just about everyone there. Ringo
Starr, the only Beatle in attendance at this last recording session
for a Beatles record (discounting the latter-day "Anthology"
recordings using John Lennon demo tapes), manages to keep things
moving, and he plays drums during the recording session. (3221)
    [O] 1970
The London Arts Gallery is on trial for exhibiting 'indecent' John
Lennon lithographs. The defense lawyers compare John Lennon's work
with that of Pablo Picasso. (3222)
    [J] 1970
John and Yoko issue an April Fool's Day press release that
announces they will have dual ***-change operations. (3225)

    "At My Front Door". (173)

(Capitol). 19 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1. (201)

John Lennon's father, Alfred 'Freddie' Lennon, dies in England.
John's relationship with his father, who had deserted him as a
child and then showed up years later to sponge off of John's
wealth, had been strained, but they had become somewhat reconciled
    in recent years. (3533)
    [J] 1989
World premiere of John and Yoko's 1971 film "Ten For Two",
documenting the John Sinclair benefit concert of Dec. 10, 1971.
Screenings are held this day and the next at the Royal Oak Music
Theater and Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor, Michigan. (3643)

    1969
Paul McCartney remains keen for The Beatles to perform live,
wanting to make a series of unannounced appearances at small clubs.
George and Ringo have some interest in the proposition, but John
is adamantly against it. By the following Fall, John will tell
Paul that he wants a divorce from The Beatles, "Like my divorce
from Cynthia". Although John's intentions to leave The Beatles
were pretty clear, they were kept secret while Allen Klein
negotiates a higher royalty with Capitol Records in the US. Klein
gets The Beatles a royalty of 69 cents per album sold, a
record-setting amount. Klein's hopes that this would win over Paul
McCartney were in vain, however. (3065)
    [J] 1970
John and Yoko travel to Los Angeles for an ad***ional four months
    of primal scream therapy. (3228)
    [R] 1976
Ringo Starr begins recording songs for his "Ringo's Rotogravure"
LP. During the sessions, which continue into May, John Lennon
assists Ringo in the recording of John's song "Cookin' (in the

the "Double Fantasy" sessions in 1980. (3537)

** The following events in Beatles history all took place on April 3. **
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Beatles * [J] John * [P] Paul * [G] George * [R] Ringo * [O] Other
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1961
The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West
    Germany. (1117)
    1963
The Beatles, at the Playhouse Theatre in London, record another
radio appearance, this time for the BBC show "Easy Beat", their
first appearance on this program. They record three songs, "Please
Please Me", "Misery", and "From Me to You". In ad***ion to
performing those 3 songs, John Lennon and Paul McCartney take part
in a program segment called "Going Up?", reviewing new record
releases along with two other panel members; they review new
singles by Bert Weedon, Cleo Laine, the Vernons Girls, and Tommy
Roe. John and Paul are each paid one guinea for their
    participation. (1753)
    1964
Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" (still officially untitled) at
Twickenham Studios. The Beatles film a bizarre promotional trailer
for "AHDN". John and George sit in a baby carriage, with their
legs handing over the edge, while nearby Ringo and Paul sit
similarly in a second baby carriage. John types away at a portable
typewriter sitting in his lap as Paul talks and George mumbles.
Twice Ringo answers a ringing telephone, saying, "It's for you,
John." Both times Lennon responds, "Don't be soft!" A rather
    cryptic promotional idea. (2084)
    1964
The Beatles film an appearance on Tyne Tees Television, answering
questions sent in by their fans. The stiff question-and-answer
format is not entirely satisfying. Broadcast on April 9. (2085)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio One, EMI Studios,
London). Completion of "Within You Without You", with George
Harrison the only Beatle in the studio. Eight violinists and three
cellists come into the studio to record a George Martin arrangement
to augment the track. George Harrison records his lead vocal, a
sitar part, and some acoustic guitar bits. "The Beatles Anthology
2" includes an instrumental version of "Within You Without You"
that essentially omits the vocal track but contains the full
instrumentation heard on the "Sgt. Pepper" version (Disc two, Track
    11). (2664)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko appear on Thames TV's "The Eamonn Andrews Show". The
show is broadcast live from the Café Royal Restaurant. John and
Yoko participate in an interview and general discussion. Other
guests on the program are Jack Benny, Rolf Harris, Yehudi Menuhin,
    and Gaynor Jones. (3038)
    [P] 1981
UK release of various artists double LP "Concerts for the People of
Kampuchea" (Atlantic). Includes live performance by Paul McCartney
and Wings, recorded on December 29, 1979. Songs: "Got to Get You
Into My Life", "Every Night", "Coming Up", "Lucille", "Let It Be",
and "Rockestra Theme" (the last selection is played by the
    supergroup 'Rockestra'). (703)
    1984
Liverpool's first statue of The Beatles is unveiled above the
doorway of The Beatles Shop on Mathew Street. The creator of the
statue is David Hughes, a student of the Liverpool College of Art,
the same art school that John Lennon attended. (3335)
    [J] 1987
UK re-release of John Lennon/Yoko Ono CD "Milk and Honey"
(Polydor). No change in the track listing. (770)
    1989
UK re-release of Beatles singles on 3-inch CDs: "I Feel Fine/She's
a Woman", "Help!/I'm Down", "Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is", and "A Hard
    Day's Night/Things We Said Today" (EMI). (821)
    [P] 1991
US telecast of Paul McCartney's "Unplugged" appearance. (3336)
    [R] 1992
Ringo appears as guest presenter at the annual Grammy Awards show
    in the US. (3656)

The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club, Liverpool, at lunchtime and
    again at night. (321)
    1963
The Beatles, at BBC Paris Studio, London, record a third radio
appearance for the BBC program "Side by Side". They had recorded
two appearances for this show only three days earlier, and they
declined the option to record a fourth show on this day. The
standard opening duet of "Side by Side" with the host Karl Denver
Trio was not re-recorded; the version recorded previously was
re-used. For their third program, The Beatles perform "Too Much
Monkey Business", "Love Me Do", "Boys", "I'll Be On My Way", and
"From Me to You". The show is broadcast on June 24. The recording
of "I'll Be On My Way" is the only studio recording that The
Beatles made of this song, a Lennon-McCartney composition that was
recorded by Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, appearing on the flip
side of their "Do You Want to Know a Secret" single (also a
Lennon-McCartney song). After the recording session, The Beatles
travel to Stowe for a late-afternoon performance. The Beatles'
recording of "I'll Be On My Way" is included on the 1994 Beatles
double-CD "Live at the BBC" (Disc one, Track seven). (1754)
    1963
The Beatles perform at Roxburgh Hall, Stowe School, Stowe,
Buckinghamshire. This appearance is at a boys' public school.
    (1755)
    1964
"Can't Buy Me Love" becomes the #1 single in the US (Billboard).
Beatles singles have held the #1 spot for 10 straight weeks. (42)
    1964
The Beatles hold the top 5 positions on the US singles chart: #1
"Can't Buy Me Love" (Capitol); #2 "Twist and Shout" (Tollie); #3
    "She Loves You" (Swan); #4 "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (Capitol);
and #5 "Please Please Me" (VeeJay). The Beatles also have the #1
and #2 albums ("Meet the Beatles" and "Introducing the Beatles").
    Beatles singles also occupy positions #31, #41, #46, #58, #65, #68,
and #79. The following week, another two songs would enter the Top
100, giving The Beatles a total of 14 songs on the singles chart.
    (2086)
    1965
Release in Sweden of Beatles single "Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is"
(Parlophone). Seven weeks in the Swedish charts; highest position
    #1. (3777)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Final mixing for "Within You Without You". At George
Harrison's request, a few seconds of laughter is added to the end
of the song, the effects taken from Abbey Road's tape library:
'Volume 6: Applause and Laughter'. (2665)
    1968
A promotional film for "Lady Madonna" is broadcast in black and
white on UK television, on the BBC1 program "Top of the Pops". The
video portion of the film clip was shot while The Beatles were
performing the song "Hey Bulldog", but the "Lady Madonna" audio
track was paired with the video for the promo release. It won't be
until 1999 that the video is broadcast with its original "Hey
    Bulldog" soundtrack. (2816)
    [R] 1975
Ringo Starr forms a new company, Ring O'Records. (3337)
    1976
Re-release in Sweden of Beatles LP "Beatles '65" (Odeon). (3828)
    [J] 1977
US re-release of John Lennon single "Stand By Me/Woman Is the
Nigger of the World" (Capitol Starline). Both sides previously
released as the A-sides of singles. (215)

    Germany. (1119)
    1962
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club, Liverpool. This night's
performance is a special appearance presented by the Beatles' fan
club. The Beatles wear their black leather outfits for the first
half of the performance, for old time's sake, then change into
their new suits for the second half of the show. (322)
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Swimming Baths, Leyton, London. Prior
to this engagement, The Beatles gave a private performance, for EMI
executives, at EMI House in central London during a presentation
ceremony celebrating their first silver disc, awarded for the
    "Please Please Me" single. (1756)
    1964
The Beatles continue filming for "A Hard Day's Night". The filming
(on a Sunday) is at Marylebone Station, which is closed to the
public on Sundays. The opening sequences of The Beatles fleeing
from their screaming fans are filmed on this Sunday and the next.
By the end of the second Sunday, they had filmed the sequences of
The Beatles running across Melcombe Place and into the station,
"hiding" while pretending to use public telephones and a photo
booth, leaping over obstacles, Paul sitting "in disguise" (wearing
a false beard) with his 'grandfather' (actor Wilfrid Brambell), and
The Beatles running down platform one and jumping onto an
already-moving train. John, George, and Ringo are also filmed in
nearby Boston Place, running towards the camera and being chased by
frenzied fans. This scene appears at the very opening of the film.
    (2087)
    1965
The Beatles continue filming for their second movie, "HELP!" (at
this time still titled "Eight Arms to Hold You"), at Twickenham
Film Studios. Shooting takes place on a set for the "dining area"
and "kitchen" sequences at the "Rajahama" restaurant (the
spectacles and the "season" ticket in the soup). (2331)
    [J] 1988
US re-release of John Lennon album "John Lennon: Plastic Ono Band"
    on CD (Capitol). (427)
    [J] 1988

    1962
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club, Liverpool, at lunchtime.
They perform at the Tower Ballroom, Wallasey, at night. The Tower
show is a "Beatles Farewell Ball", the Beatles about to go to
Hamburg for their third extended stay. They share the bill this
night with Emile Ford and the Checkmates. A promotional poster for
the event spelled the group's name as "The Beetles". Also
performing are Gerry and the Pacemakers, Howie Casey and the
Seniors, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, and The Big Three. (323)
    1963
The Beatles perform at Pavilion Gardens Ballroom, Buxton,
    Derbyshire. (1757)
    1964
Filming at Twickenham Studios for the as-yet-untitled movie "A Hard
Day's Night". In the morning they shoot the "make-up room"
sequence. In the afternoon, they film a portion of the "interior
    police station" segments. (2088)
    1965
UK release of Beatles EP "Beatles For Sale" (Parlophone). Songs:
"No Reply", "I'm a Loser", "Rock and Roll Music", and "Eight Days a
Week". Highest chart position: #1. (523)
    1965
The Beatles at Twickenham Film Studios, shooting ad***ional footage
for the "Rajahama" restaurant scenes for The Beatles' second movie,
"Eight Arms to Hold You" (soon to be renamed "HELP!"). (2332)
    1965
During a break in filming at Twickenham Studios, The Beatles
receive a "Bell" award from Radio Caroline, also giving an
interview for broadcast on the "pirate" station. Radio London,
another "pirate" station, also interviews the group. (2333)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). The first session for the album that came to be called
"Revolver". The first song to be taped - "Tomorrow Never Knows". It
only takes three takes to get the basic song track recorded, but it
takes the rest of this day, some of the next, and some ad***ional
time on April 22 to complete the complex overdubs. The song is the
first to use Artificial Double Tracking, which is the invention of
Abbey Road engineer Ken Townsend. The song uses a multitude of tape
loops, feeding voices and effects through a revolving Leslie
speaker, and guitar distortion (for the "seagull-like" noise on the
track) The studio wizardry was created by The Beatles, George
Martin, and Geoff Emerick. For perspective on how far The Beatles
were advancing musically, recall that "She Loves You" was recorded
less than three years earlier). Take 1 of "Tomorrow Never Knows"
is included on "The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc one, Track 17).
    (2465)
    1967
The first master tape of the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club
Band" album is created. The song order on side one is different
from the final product at this point, the last five songs on that
side being initially ordered as follows: "Being For the Benefit of
Mr. Kite", "Fixing a Hole", "Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds",
"Getting Better", and "She's Leaving Home". The Beatles had
specified that there were to be no gaps between songs--a unique
    idea at the time. (2666)
    1977
The ex-Beatles, working through Apple, lose in their attempt to
halt the commercial release of the LP "The Beatles Live! At the
Star Club in Hamburg, Germany: 1962". The poor-quality recording
had been made during the last Beatles performance in Hamburg, on
December 31, 1962. The LP will be released in Germany two days
later; it will be released in the UK on May 1 and in the US on June
    13. (3553)
    [G] 1979
A promotional video for George Harrison's new single "Blow Away" is
broadcast in US television on "The Midnight Special". (3339)
    [P] 1983
A German court orders Paul McCartney to pay Bettina Heubers, a
20-year-old German woman who claims to be McCartney's illegitimate
daughter, the equivalent of $282 per month until the case is
settled. McCartney offers *****bmit blood tests (or any other
tests), and blood tests will later prove that McCartney is NOT the
    woman's father. (3340)
