    1961
The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West
    Germany. (1123)
    1963
The Beatles are interviewed on the live radio program, the BBC show
"Pop Inn". Their about-to-be-released single "From Me to You" is
played during the interview. The program is broadcast live from
the BBC Paris Studio in London. From there The Beatles travel to
Wembley Studios for a live television appearance. (1759)
    1963
At Wembley Studios, Wembley, The Beatles appear in a live
television broadcast. This is their second appearance on the
Associated-Rediffusion program "Tuesday Rendezvous", which is
broadcast in London and by some other ITV stations. The Beatles
did lip-sync performances of "From Me to You" and about 50 seconds
of "Please Please Me" (during the closing cre***s). After the
broadcast, The Beatles perform live in Kilburn. (1760)
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Ballroom of the Gaumont State Cinema,
Kilburn, London. Earlier in the day The Beatles had appeared on a
live radio program and a live television program. (1761)
    [R] 1964
Filming continues for "A Hard Day's Night", but Ringo is the only
Beatle required on this day. Shooting Ringo's solo sequence on the
Thames River towpath and embankment, south of the river and west of
the Kew Bridge. Filmed at Kew, Surrey. (2090)
    [O] 1964
US record companies Capitol and VeeJay settle their legal battle
out-of-court. Capitol obtains exclusive rights to manufacture and
distribute Beatles records, but VeeJay is permitted to continue
releasing Beatles records for a short time. VeeJay essentially has
only the songs from the Beatles' first album, which they had
released under the title "Introducing the Beatles", at their
disposal, so they would end up repackaging these tracks a number of
times in an attempt to milk every possible bit of profit from their
    limited rights. (2175)
    1965
UK release of Beatles single "Ticket to Ride/Yes It Is"
(Parlophone). 9 weeks on the charts; highest position #1. (524)
    1965
Filming at Twickenham Film Studios, Twickenham, for the movie
"HELP!" Shooting in a warehouse interior for a scene that would be
omitted from the completed movie. (2336)
    [R] 1971
UK release of Ringo Starr single "It Don't Come Easy/Early 1970"
(Apple). 9 weeks on the charts; highest position #4. (580)
    [P] 1973
US release of Paul McCartney and Wings single "My Love/The Mess"
(Apple). 18 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1. (158)
    [P] 1976
UK release of Wings LP "Wings at the Speed of Sound" (Capitol).
Songs: "Let 'Em In", "The Note You Never Wrote", "She's My Baby",
"Beware My Love", "Wino Junko", "Silly Love Songs", "Cook of the
House", "Time to Hide", "Must Do Something About It", "San Ferry
Anne", and "Warm and Beautiful". (640)
    1985
UK re-release of Beatles single "Ticket to Ride/Yes it Is"
(Parlophone). 20th anniversary reissue. Issued as a regular
single and also as a picture disc. (758)
    [P] 1992
Paul McCartney and George Martin are interviewed for a UK (ITV) and
US (Disney Channel) television special called "The Making of Sgt.
Pepper". The Disney Channel broadcast will censor several minutes
from the film where the influence of drugs on the album is

The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West
    Germany. (1124)
    1962
Stu Sutcliffe, former Beatle and John Lennon's closest friend,
living in Hamburg, West Germany, dies from a brain hemorrhage at
    the age of 21. (976)
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Majestic Ballroom, Birkenhead. This
will be their final appearance at this venue. (1762)
    1964
US release of Beatles LP "The Beatles Second Album" (Capitol).
Songs: "Roll Over Beethoven", "Thank You Girl", "You Really Got a
Hold On Me", "Devil In Her Heart", "Money", "You Can't Do That",
"Long Tall Sally", "I Call Your Name", "Please Mr. Postman", "I'll
    Get You", and "She Loves You". 55 weeks on Billboard chart;
    highest position #1. (17)
    1964
The Beatles filming at Twickenham Film Studios for "A Hard Day's
Night". Shooting the "production office" sequence. (2091)
    1965
The Beatles record their final performance for the BBC television
program "Top of the Pops". They lip-sync to the songs from their
latest single, "Ticket to Ride" and "Yes It Is". For the first
time, The Beatles wear the fawn-colored jackets that they will wear
for their famous Shea Stadium concert. A portion of the "Ticket to
Ride" video is included in the May 22 broadcast of the popular
British sci-fi series "Doctor Who". (2337)
    [R] 1970
UK release of soundtrack LP "The Magic Christian". Ringo Starr
acted in the movie, and the album contains a bit of Ringo's
dialogue from the film. The film's theme song, "Come and Get It",
was composed by Paul McCartney. McCartney produced the group
Badfinger's performance of the song for the soundtrack. (569)
    1970
Paul McCartney announces his resignation from The Beatles, one week
before the UK release of his solo album "McCartney". The world is
shocked. John Lennon, who had kept his much-earlier decision to
leave The Beatles quiet for the sake of the others, is furious,
feeling (justifiably) betrayed by McCartney's pre-emptive strike,
which obviously was aimed at obtaining maximum momentum for
McCartney himself. When a reporter calls Lennon to comment upon
McCartney's resignation, Lennon says, "...Paul hasn't left. I sacked
him." Things get worse, for McCartney issues a printed
'self-interview' with advance promotional copies of the "McCartney"
album. Some of the answers to the interview questions come across
    as petty and self-serving. (3224)
    1989
UK re-release of Beatles single "Get Back/Don't Let Me Down"
(Parlophone). 20th anniversary reissue. Released as a regular
single and also as a picture disc. (822)
    1990
The "Minor Planet Circular" announces a citation approving the
naming of four new asteroids discovered by astronomer B. A. Skiff
after the four Beatles. The asteroid names are (4147) Lennon,
    discovered 01/12/83; (4148) McCartney, discovered 07/11/83; (4149)
Harrison, discovered 03/09/84; and (4150) Starr, discovered
08/31/84. To name an asteroid, the discoverer suggests a name of
16 characters or less. The suggested name is forwarded to the
International Astronomical Union's Small Bodies Names Committee,
along with a brief argument as to why that name is appropriate.
The argument for naming asteroid 4150 after Ringo Starr went as
follows: "He's a Liverpudlian of lively personality and deadpan
humor who occasionally sat in as drummer with The Beatles during
their early days in Hamburg." If an asteroid has not been named
after ten years of its discovery, anyone can propose a name. The
asteroid Jerry Garcia got its name from an e-mail campaign started
by a fan. Other asteroids have subsequently been named after
musicians: Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Jean Michel
    Jarre, and Mike Oldfield. (3900)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1961
The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West
    Germany. (1127)
    1962
The Beatles begin a seven-week stint at the Star-Club, Hamburg,
West Germany. They were required to perform for four hours one
night and for three hours the next, alternating back and forth
(performing in shifts of one hour on, one hour off). From April 13
through May 31 they had only one night off (April 20, Good Friday).
Over a period of 48 nights they logged 172 hours on stage. For
two weeks the Beatles shared the bill with Gene Vincent. (326)
    [O] 1962
The late Stu Sutcliffe's mother arrives in Hamburg to identify her
son's body and make arrangements to have it returned to Liverpool
    for burial. (978)
    1963
The Beatles record their first television appearance on the
national BBC network, on the TV program "The 625 Show". Recording
for the program is in Studio E of Lime Grove Studios, Lime Grove,
Shepherd's Bush, London. The Beatles perform three songs: "From Me
to You", "Thank You Girl", and "Please Please Me". This recording
session prevents The Beatles from making an advertised personal
appearance (not performing, just "showing up") at a dance in
Lancashire. Since they were in London, The Beatles went to a party
hosted by Shadows guitarist Bruce Welch, where they meet Cliff
    Richard. (1765)
    [J] 1964
Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" continues, this day with only
George Harrison and John Lennon. In the morning, George's solo
sequence is filmed, the part where George finds himself with the
marketing boss of a clothing company and calls their shirts
"grotty" and their teen TV star "a drag". In the afternoon, George
and John film the "bathroom" scene, where John is in the tub
playing with toy submarines, singing "Rule Britannia", and appears
to disappear down the drain. Roy Orbison, with whom The Beatles
had toured, stops by the film set to say hello. (2093)
    1965
The Beatles complete filming for the "Relativity Cadenza" scene for
their movie "HELP!" (the name "Eight Arms to Hold You" having been
    dropped). (2341)
    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Having completed a day of filming at Twickenham Film
Studios, The Beatles begin the recording of John's song "Help!",
the title track for The Beatles' movie-in-progress and the next
Beatles album and single. Recorded from beginning to completion in
one session (7:00 pm - 11:15 pm), taping 12 takes and numerous
overdubs. John Lennon would later refer to "Help!" as one of his
first songs dealing with his personal feelings. The "Help!" single
would be released on July 23, the album on August 6. (2342)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). The Beatles complete the song "Love You To", then set
about recording their next single. Two takes of the rhythm track
for "Paperback Writer" are recorded, the second take being selected
as the basic track to which overdubs will be added later. (2469)
    [J] 1987
UK re-release of John Lennon's posthumous album "Menlove Avenue" on

The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. (327)
    1963
The Beatles tape an appearance on the ABC television program "Thank
Your Lucky Stars", their third appearance on that show. They do a
lip-sync performance of "From Me to You". Topping the line-up for
the show is an American, Del Shannon. Also appearing are the (not
yet successful) Dave Clark Five, the Vernons Girls, and Bert
Weedon. The program is broadcast on April 20. After the recording
session, The Beatles travel to Richmond-upon-Thames to see, for the
first time, another up-and-coming group, The Rolling Stones. (1766)
    1964
Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" continues. The Beatles film a
scene that will not be included in the final film: stuck in a
traffic jam, The Beatles are cursed at by a passenger in another
car. British comedy actor Frank Thornton plays the part of The
Beatles' chauffeur. Later, some location shooting is done in
    Arlington Road. (2094)
    1965
The Beatles filming scenes for the movie "HELP!", on Ailsa Avenue,
Twickenham, Middle***. Included is the scene where The Beatles
arrive home and get out of their Rolls Royce, each entering a
separate door (Ringo enters no. 5, John no. 7, Paul no. 9, and
George no.11). Two women standing nearby debate whether or not to
wave at The Beatles. As The Beatles enter their respective doors,
the scene switches to a Twickenham film set that makes it appear as
if all of the doors lead into one huge communal living area. (2343)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). "Paperback Writer" is completed with numerous overdubs,
including Paul's lead vocal and the novel "Frere Jacques" backing
vocal sung by John and George. After a 30-minute break, The
Beatles start recording John's song "Rain". On this song The
Beatles use the full extent of studio technology available at the
time: limiters, compressors, jangle boxes, Leslie speakers, ADT,
backwards tapes, machines set to run faster or slower than usual,
and vari-speed vocals. Five takes are recorded before the rhythm
and vocal tracks are finalized. The next session will be spent
recording extensive overdubs and doing tape-to-tape reductions of
    the song. (2470)
    1969
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). John and Paul, without George and Ringo, record John's
song "The Ballad of John and Yoko", which at this point has the
subtitle, "(They're Gonna Crucify Me)". This song will be the
first Beatles recording not mixed into mono and the first Beatles
stereo single released in the UK. (The "Get Back" single was
released in stereo in the US). During the recording of this song,
the antagonism that has been hounding John and Paul is absent, and
they work together well. They lay down the basic track, including
John's lead vocal, in 11 takes (John playing acoustic guitar and
Paul playing drums). John adds overdubs of lead guitar, second
lead guitar, and percussive 'thumps' on the back of an acoustic
guitar. Paul adds overdubs of backing vocal, maracas, bass, and
piano. John is aware of the potential for backlash from the
"Christ" references in the lyrics, so he sends a note to Apple
publicist Tony Bramwell that reads, "NO pre-publicity on "Ballad of
John and Yoko", especially the 'Christ' bit--so don't play it round
too much or you'll frighten people--Get it PRESSED FIRST". Indeed,
"The Ballad of John and Yoko" will be banned from many stations as
being blasphemous. On some radio stations, the word 'Christ' is
e***ed in backwards to avoid the ban (John is miffed at this
unauthorized censorship of his work). (3039)

    1963
The Beatles appear live on the Granada TV program "Scene at 6:30".
They lip-sync to their single "From Me to You". Because The
Beatles had been taking advantage of performing on radio and
television whenever possible, this live broadcast is at the same
time as the broadcast of their taped performance on "The 625 Show"
    (recorded April 13). (1768)
    1964
Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" in the Notting Hill Gate section
of London. The Beatles film "chase scenes" with (actors dressed
as) policemen. The "police station" is actually St. John's
Secondary School at 83 Clarendon Road (only the outside is filmed,
although The Beatles did go inside to escape their fans during
lulls in the filming). They also film in a nearby cul-de-sac
(Heathfield St.). Sequences in Portland Road and Penzance Place
are filmed but left out of the final movie. Exactly when the
film's title, "A Hard Day's Night", had been selected is uncertain,
and whether it was based on a Ringo Starr original idea or a phrase
he picked up from John Lennon's story "Sad Michael", will never be
known with certainty. However, John and Paul have written the
song, and The Beatles will record it at Abbey Road studios this
evening (see separate entry). The film's title is officially
    announced the following day. (2096)
    1964
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). They record the title track for their first film, "A Hard
Day's Night". The writing of the song was a bit unusual in that
John and Paul had the title first, and had to write a song to
order. The song is completed in nine takes. "A Hard Day's Night"
ended up being the title of the film, the title of a song, and the
title of the associated album. "The Beatles Anthology 1" includes
Take 1 of "A Hard Day's Night" from this recording session (Disc 2,
    Track 12). (2097)
    [J] 1965
Since The Beatles' would no longer appear live or pre-tape
performances for Rediffusion Television's program "Ready, Steady,
Go!", John Lennon and George Harrison appear live on the program to
give an interview plugging The Beatles' latest single "Ticket to
Ride". [Note: the program title had been changed to "Ready Steady
Goes Live!" on April 2, 1965, but it would be changed back to
"Ready, Steady, Go!" on June 4, 1965]. (2344)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). "Rain" is completed after eleven uninterrupted hours of
overdubbing tambourine, bass, and more vocals. After tape-to-tape
reduction, even more overdubs are added. Four mono mixes are made,
with the third being selected as 'best' (and the song wouldn't be
mixed into stereo until December 2, 1969). (2471)
    1969
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Recording "Old Brown Shoe" and "Something". First "Old
Brown Shoe" is recorded in four takes, the basic track consisting
of Ringo on drums, George on lead guitar and vocal, Paul on piano,
and John playing rhythm guitar. Then overdubs, including a new
lead vocal and backing vocals, are added. John does not
participate in the recording of 13 takes of "Something". (3040)
    [R] 1971
US release of Ringo Starr single "It Don't Come Easy/Early 1970"
(Apple). 12 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #4. (138)
    [P] 1973
Paul McCartney's television special "James Paul McCartney" is
broadcast by ABC-TV in the US. ATV will broadcast the special in
the UK on May 10. It receives very mixed reviews. (3355)
    1981
US release of Beatles (unauthorized) LP's "Dawn of the Silver
Beatles" and "Lightning Strikes Twice" (both PAC Records). Songs
