The official announcement came today--the name of The Beatles'
first movie is to be "A Hard Day's Night". Meanwhile, The Beatles
continue filming for the movie at Les Ambassadeurs in London,
shooting the "discotheque" sequence. During the day, The Beatles
squeeze in an interview with Ed Sullivan, who had flown over from
America to film The Beatles on location. Sullivan doesn't get much
of an interview, though, only 1 min 34 secs. But Sullivan
unknowingly gets a real treasure. He is given a film clip from the
movie to air on his television program--the "You Can't Do That"
performance from the "live television performance" scenes shot at
the Scala Theatre. When the song is cut from the movie during
final e***ing, Sullivan is left with exclusive footage that will
only be shown on his television show. Broadcast on May 24. (2098)

    [P] 1990
UK re-release of Paul McCartney LP "McCartney" (EMI). Although a

reissue series, but to assure that the LP remained available after
it had been deleted on the Fame label. (841)
    [P] 1998
Linda McCartney dies of breast cancer. She and her family had
thought she was winning her fight against cancer, but it was not to

The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. (332)
    1963
The Beatles perform at London's Royal Albert Hall for the first
time. The occasion is a live concert, performed in front of an
audience, for a live BBC radio broadcast. The show, called
"Swinging Sound '63", is divided into two halves, with The Beatles
appearing in both halves, but only the second half is broadcast on
the radio. In the first half, The Beatles perform "Please Please
Me" and "Misery". In the second half, they play "Twist and Shout"
and "From Me to You", taking the producers by surprise--they had
rehearsed the song "Thank You Girl" instead of "Twist and Shout",
but substituted the song unannounced. At the end of the show, The
Beatles join the other artists in performing a grand finale version
of "Mack the Knife". The other artists include Del Shannon, the
Springfields, Lance Percival, Rolf Harris, the Vernons Girls, Kenny
Lynch, Shane Fenton & the Fentones, and George Melly. After the
show, Paul McCartney meets, for the first time, actress and 'teen
    personality' Jane Asher. (1770)

    in a row. (44)
    1964
In the morning, The Beatles work at Twickenham Film Studios, adding
and re-recording bits of dialogue for "A Hard Day's Night". In the
afternoon, they rehearse for a television special to be called
"Around the Beatles", featuring The Beatles and other musical
    artists. (2099)
    1969
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studios Three and Two, EMI
Studios, London). Completion of "Old Brown Shoe". Then George and
John go into Studio Two and record guitar overdubs to "I Want You
    (She's So Heavy)". (3041)
    1970
The Beatles' single "Let It Be" is #1 in the US charts for the
    second straight week. (3673)
    [J] 1972
An Immigration and Naturalization Service hearing is held in New
York concerning the deportation order pending against John Lennon.
Evidence uncovered later will show that the Nixon administration
feared that Lennon would be involved in demonstrations at the
Republican National Convention in Miami. (3465)
    [J] 1975
UK release of John Lennon single "Stand By Me/Move Over Ms. L"
    (Apple). (626)
    [J] 1975
In an appearance pre-taped in New York, John Lennon appears on the

    1963
The Beatles perform at King's Hall in Stoke-on-Trent, for a Brian
    Epstein "Mersey Beat Showcase". (1771)
    1964
The Beatles record a set of songs for their appearance on the
Associated-Rediffusion television special "Around the Beatles".
They will lip-sync to this pre-recorded set when the special is
actually recorded on April 28. The Beatles tape "Twist and Shout",
"Roll Over Beethoven", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Long Tall Sally",
"Can't Buy Me Love", a medley of their hits "Love Me Do/Please
Please Me/From Me to You/She Loves You/I Want to Hold Your Hand",
and an Isley Brothers song, "Shout". "The Beatles Anthology 1"
reports that The Beatles also recorded the song "Boys" for the
program, but it was not included on the TV special. "Anthology 1"
includes the following tracks recorded for this program: "I Wanna
Be Your Man", "Long Tall Sally", "Boys", and "Shout" (Disc 2,

11 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1. (81)
    1965
The Beatles are awarded two Grammy Awards for the year 1964: Best
Vocal Performance by a Group ("A Hard Day's Night") and Best New
Artist. A film clip of actor Peter Sellers presenting the Grammys
to The Beatles is filmed on April 28 and is broadcast for US
television on May 18, as part of the program "The Best on Record".
In the film clip, after receiving the award from Sellers, John
Lennon begins speaking nonsense French, and the other Beatles and
Sellers join in until the false French evolves into "It's A Long
    Way to Tipperary". (2350)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). "Doctor Robert" is completed with vocal overdubs and the
production of rough mono mixes. (2473)

    1961
The Beatles perform at the Top Ten Club, Reeperbahn, Hamburg, West
    Germany. (1134)
    1961
The Beatles' manager (now ex-manager) Allan Williams responds to
The Beatles' letter informing him that they are not going to pay
him a commission for their current engagement in Hamburg. They
claim that they had made the arrangements themselves and that
therefore they owe him nothing. Williams' letter back to the group
threatens legal action, which he might have been able to
successfully pursue, but as things turn out he does not do so.
    (1270)
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Ballroom of the Mersey View Pleasure
Grounds, Overton Hills, Frodsham, Cheshire. (1772)
    [P] 1964
Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" continues with the filming of a
solo scene for Paul McCartney. The other three Beatles do not
report for filming this day or the next. Shooting takes place at
The Jack Billings TV School of Dancing, Goldhawk Road, London.
Paul's bit involves him coming across a rehearsal room during his
search for Ringo and his encounter with an actress. Largely due to
Paul's nervousness, the scene just doesn't gel, and they try again
the following day after some rewriting of the script is done.
    (2101)
    1965
Filming resumes at Twickenham Film Studios for the movie "HELP!"
Included in the scenes shot on this day is the one where a "thug"
hidden in a mail-box grabs Ringo's hand as he mails a letter and
attempts to remove the sacrificial ring from Ringo's finger. (2345)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). A 12-hour recording session, most of which is devoted to
John's song "And Your Bird Can Sing". Two takes and the song is
considered completed, and mono mixes of the finished song are made.
But the finished track is ultimately rejected and the song will be
re-made on April 26. Four rehearsal rhythm tracks for George's
song "Taxman" are taped, but the song will be recorded from start
on the next day. Take 2 of "And Your Bird Can Sing" was released
on "The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc one, Track 19). (2474)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Working on overdubs for "Only a Northern Song". The song
is completed. "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes take 3 (recorded
Feb. 13), with bass and guitar overdubs from this session, of "Only
    a Northern Song". (2667)
    1968
Apple Music runs ads soliciting tapes from unknown artists, and a
flood of submissions follows. Financial grants are given to many
applicants, often with little regard to merit. John Lennon hires
an astrologer (named Caleb) to consult the 'I Ching Book of
Changes' to assist in making business decisions. Overall, Apple's
music division will turn out to be relatively successful,
sponsoring artists such as Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin,
Jackie Lomax, Yoko Ono, Plastic Ono Band, Ravi Shankar, David Peel,
    Elephant's Memory, and others. (2824)
    1969
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Recording organ and conga overdubs for "I Want You (She's
So Heavy)". Then 26 takes of "Oh! Darling", plus an organ overdub.
    (3042)
    [P] 1970
US release of Paul McCartney LP "McCartney" (Apple). Songs: "The
Lovely Linda", "That Would Be Something", "Valentine Day", "Every
Night", "Hot as Sun/Glasses", "Junk", "Man We Was Lonely", "Oo
You", "Momma Miss America", "Teddy Boy", "Singalong Junk", "Maybe
    I'm Amazed", and "Kreen-Akrore". 47 weeks on Billboard chart;
    highest position #1. (124)
    [G] 1976
George Harrison appears at New York's City Center with the Monty
Python comedy group for their "Lumberjack Song". (3535)
    [J] 1982
A section of New York's Central Park, partly funded by Yoko Ono, is
officially dedicated as "Strawberry Fields", in honor of John
    Lennon. (3600)

    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. (334)
    1963
The Beatles perform in the afternoon at the New Musical Express
    "1962-63 Annual Poll Winners' All-Star Concert", a 14-act affair
held at Empire Pool, Wembley, Middle***. This is The Beatles'
biggest appearance yet, with an audience of about 10,000. The top
group is Cliff Richard & the Shadows. Even though The Beatles had
not actually won in the polls, they were picked to appear because
of their two recent #1 singles. They perform four songs: "Please
Please Me", "From Me to You", "Twist and Shout", and "Long Tall
Sally". That evening The Beatles perform again, at the Pigalle
    Club in London. (1773)
    [P] 1964
Another stab at filming Paul's solo scene for The Beatles' first
movie, "A Hard Day's Night". Again, only Paul reports for
shooting. However, the scene just doesn't work, and it is omitted
    from the final film. (2102)
    1965
The Beatles continue filming at Twickenham Film Studios for the
movie "HELP!" Shooting of the scene in which The Beatles visit the
office of Scotland Yard's Superintendent Gluck. (2346)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The Beatles record "Taxman", taping 11 takes of the rhythm
track and recording overdubs. By the end of the session, the song
is pretty much completed, but ad***ional overdubs and e***ing will
be done as late as June 21. "The Beatles Anthology 2" includes the
completed take 11 of "Taxman" (Disc one, Track 20). (2475)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). They decide to record a short section of gibberish and
noise to follow "A Day in the Life", in the run-out groove. They
record a bunch of assorted noises and voices, Geoff Emerick chops
up the tape and randomly re-assembles it and e***s it backwards.
At John's suggestion, they also insert a high-pitch 15 kilocycle
whistle audible only by dogs. Both of these ad***ions are omitted
from the American album. At long last, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
Hearts Club Band" is finished. The total number of hours The
Beatles spent in the studio working on the album was added up: 700
    hours. (2668)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko form Bag Productions, a film production company.
    (3043)
    [R] 1978
Release of Ringo Starr LP "Bad Boy" in the US (Portrait) and the UK
(Polydor). Songs: "Who Needs a Heart", "Bad Boy", "Lipstick
Traces", "Heart On My Sleeve", "Where Did Our Love Go", "Hard
Times", "Tonight", "Monkey See Monkey Do", "Old Time Relovin'", and
    "A Man Like Me". (671)

Ad***ional filming for "A Hard Day's Night". The Beatles are
filmed running down the iron staircase at the rear of the
Hammersmith Odeon, the beginning of the "We're out!" segment in
which The Beatles run, jump, and have a lark to the song "Can't Buy
Me Love". Then they filmed ad***ional "police chase" footage.
After that, Ringo films ad***ional scenes for his solo sequence:
stopping to photograph milk bottles, being chased by two girl fans,
running into a second-hand shop and emerging in disguise, and being
watched by a policeman as he strolls along. Paul was filmed making
his way to the "TV Rehearsal Room" for his solo sequence, but the
footage is later scrapped along with that sequence. (2103)
    1965
More filming for the movie "HELP!", at Twickenham Film Studios.
Filming of the opening sequence where Clang throws darts at a
black-and-white film of The Beatles performing the song "Help!"
(This film of The Beatles performing "Help!" was released to
commercial television to promote the song when it was released as a
single. This version, without Clang and his darts, becomes known
as the "dartless" version.) The Beatles also film a long scene
with actor Frankie Howerd (as the character Sam Ahab) and actress
Wendy Richard (as Lady Macbeth), but this scene is omitted from the
    finished print of "HELP!" (2347)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). A nine-hour session at Abbey Road, recording various
overdubs. For "Taxman", overdubbing of the "Mister Wilson, Mister
Heath" refrain and of a cowbell part. A sitar part and vocals are
overdubbed onto "Tomorrow Never Knows" (which is still titled "Mark
    I" at this point). (2476)
    [J] 1969
In a formal ceremony atop Apple headquarters on Savile Row, John
Winston Lennon legally changes his middle name to "Ono", although
British law requires that "Winston" must be retained as part of his
legal name. Commissioner of Oaths Bueno de Mesquita conducts the
    proceedings. (3044)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko in Studio Two, EMI Studios, London. John and Yoko
record their heartbeats. They also record the track "John and
Yoko" (John repeating "Yoko" and Yoko repeating "John" for 22
minutes), which will be included on their 3rd LP, "The Wedding
    Album". (3045)

jumping and skipping and rolling on the ground. John, Paul, and
George are also filmed jumping off a ladder, filmed by a cameraman
laying on the ground, to give the impression of high-altitude,
high-spirited leaping. (Ringo is filmed as if he is about to
execute a gargantuan leap, then gives a mini-jump--an unexpectedly
clever bit). John Lennon had to leave early to attend a literary
luncheon being held in his honor at the Dorchester Hotel. That's
why only Paul, George, and Ringo are seen at the very end of the
"Can't Buy Me Love" segment, when a groundsman shouts, "I suppose
you know this is private property," and George retorts "Sorry we
    hurt your field, mister." (2104)
    [J] 1964
John Lennon attends Foyle's Literary Luncheon at the Dorchester
Hotel in London to receive the Literary Prize for "In His Own
Write". His entire acceptance speech is, "Thank you very much, and
God bless you." He did not say, "You've got a lucky face," which
is something he actually said five days later during the taping of
"Around the Beatles". The audience, which had been looking forward
to a more substantial speech is disappointed, so Brian Epstein
steps in to give ad***ional comments. Lennon's sharp tongue comes
into play, though, when a social matron demands autographs from
John, telling her companion, "I never thought I would stoop to
asking for such an autograph." Lennon snorted back, "And I never
thought I would be forced to sign my name for someone like you."

Filming at Twickenham Film Studios for the movie "HELP!"
Completion of the unused "drama-school" sequence, begun the
    previous day. (2348)

In Majorca, John and Yoko are taken into police custody and
questioned about their alleged abduction of Yoko's daughter Kyoko
from Anthony Cox, Kyoko's father. Yoko had been awarded custody of
Kyoko when she and Cox were divorced. Cox had filed a report with
police after Kyoko's disappearance from a playground. (3258)

    1964
The last day of filming for The Beatles' first movie "A Hard Day's
Night", at Edgehill Rd., West Ealing, London. This final bit is
for Ringo's solo sequence: he drapes his coat over some puddles for
a lady to cross over unmuddied, but the final puddle is not a
puddle at all, but a rather large hole in the road with a workman
in it. In eight weeks, The Beatles had completed filming for what
would become hailed as one of the best "pop" films of all time, in
ad***ion to its being a classic comedy. In the afternoon, The
Beatles celebrated with an end-of-movie party in a private hall
behind The Turks Head pub. The movie would premiere in London on
July 6. The BBC obtained the television rights to unused footage
from the filming of "A Hard Day's Night" and produced a 28-minute
documentary called "Follow the Beatles"; it is broadcast on August
    3. (2106)
    1965
Location shooting for the movie "HELP!", at Strand-on-the-Green,
Chiswick, London. Shooting a scene where The Beatles are walking
down a narrow alley and emerge onto the Thames River towpath; they
realize that they in danger from "thugs" dressed as bag-pipers and
seek shelter inside the City Barge public house (where Ringo falls
through a trap door and is trapped with a tiger). John, Paul, and
George escape by diving through the pub's glass window front,
landing in the street outside. (2349)

The Beatles perform at the Fairfield Hall Ballroom, Croydon,
Surrey. This is yet another "Mersey Beat Showcase", and it had
been arranged prior to The Beatles' having their first #1 single
and before Gerry & the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas,
and The Big Three had become known outside of Liverpool. The
promoter, fearing that ticket sales would be light, hired John
Leyton to top the bill. When Leyton became too ill to appear,
notices were posted outside the ballroom's main entrance. These
notices evoked cheering among the waiting fans, none of whom had
    come to see Leyton. (1776)
    1964
"Can't Buy Me Love" is the #1 single in the US for the 4th week in
    a row. (45)
    1964
The Beatles rehearse for their television special "Around the
    Beatles". (2107)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Just days after the completion of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
Hearts Club Band", The Beatles embark upon their next project--a
film to be called "Magical Mystery Tour". Recording of the title
track is begun with the taping of three takes of the basic rhythm
track and the assembling of coach and traffic noises into a tape
loop (courtesy of Abbey Road's tape library: 'Volume 36: Traffic
    Noise Stereo"). (2669)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko's film "Rape" is shown at a television festival in

UK release of Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas single "Do You Want
to Know a Secret/I'll Be On My Way", both songs cre***ed to
Lennon-McCartney. John Lennon wrote "Do You Want to Know a
Secret", and Paul McCartney wrote "I'll Be On My Way". The only
recording that The Beatles made of "I'll Be On My Way" was for the
radio program "Side By Side", recorded on April 4, 1963 and
    broadcast on June 24. (3710)
    1964
The Beatles perform at the Empire Pool, Wembley, for their first
live appearance in Britain in 15 weeks. This is for the "New
    Musical Express" 1963-64 Poll-Winners All-Star Concert. The
Beatles perform "She Loves You", "You Can't Do That", "Twist and
Shout", "Long Tall Sally", and "Can't Buy Me Love". They receive
their poll-winners awards from actor Roger Moore (who would replace
Sean Connery as James Bond). The concert is taped by ABC
Television and is broadcast, under the title "Big Beat '64", on May
    10 and again on November 8. (2108)
    1966
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,

Can Sing". Eleven more takes of the basic rhythm track are
recorded, with take ten being selected as 'best' for overdubs. The
ending of take six was the best, so it was blended into the master
    track. (2477)

London). Recording a lead vocal overdub onto "Oh! Darling",
followed by 32 takes of the basic track for Ringo's "Octopus's
Garden". They worked without a producer. Prior to this session,
John had remixed recordings of his and Yoko's heartbeats and the
two of them shouting each other's names (the track "John and Yoko"
on John and Yoko's "Wedding Album") into stereo. Take 2 of
"Octopus's Garden" (with an ending bit from Take 8) was released on
"The Beatles Anthology 3" (Disc two, Track 14). (3048)
