The Quarry Men perform at the Casbah Coffee Club, West Derby,
Liverpool. Ken Brown, suffering from a heavy cold, is unable to
perform. After the show, an argument erupts when Paul McCartney
takes the position that Brown should not get a share of the
performance fee since he had not performed. McCartney gets John
Lennon and George Harrison on his side. Brown quits and The Quarry
Men decide not to play for the club again, due to their objections
over Mrs. Best paying Brown for his non-performance. However, they

wrote to Lennon asking him to send her a poem. The poem was signed

    runs through November 14.
    1968
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,

    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club at lunchtime; that night
they appear at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton, Wallasey. The
Tower show is a significant Brian Epstein promotional package, with
US rocker Little Richard topping the bill. Altogether, 12 acts
perform, and the night is a tremendous success. For The Beatles
themselves, it is quite an experience to play second to Little
Richard. It is also quite an experience (a negative one) when they
bump into the new drummer for Lee Curtis & the All-Stars--Pete
    Best.
    1964
US release of LP "Songs, Pictures, and Stories of The Fabulous
Beatles" (VeeJay). Yet another return to the songs from
"Introducing the Beatles". 12 weeks on Billboard chart; highest
    position #63.
    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Recording songs for their second album of 1965. In a
hurry to record the album and have it in stores by early December,
The Beatles nonetheless produce a masterpiece, "Rubber Soul". They
begin by recording "Run For Your Life" in its entirety, in five
takes. John Lennon later admits to lifting two lines from Elvis
Presley''s 1955 hit "Baby Let''s Play House" in writing this song.
Next, The Beatles begin recording John''s "This Bird Has Flown", but
its final title will be "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)".
They record one take and numerous overdubs, including George
Harrison''s double-tracked sitar part, the first appearance of that
Indian instrument on a pop record. Not completely happy with this
version of the song, The Beatles start over again on October 21.
The version recorded this day is included on "The Beatles Anthology
    2" (Disc one, Track 14).
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). After a mixing session at De Lane Lea Recording Studios
(for "It''s All Too Much", which was recorded there), The Beatles
move back to Abbey Road for a "Magical Mystery Tour" session. John
Lennon supervises the entire session, taking on the role of
producer for the first time. After mixing and e***ing is completed
for "Blue Jay Way", accordionist Shirley Jackson and her
percussionist partner, Reg Wale, record a Lennon-McCartney
instrumental, "Shirley''s Wild Accordion", for the "Magical Mystery
Tour" soundtrack. Ringo and Paul give (unspecified) musical
assistance. They record 15 takes. Although Shirley Evans does
appear in the movie, playing accordion on the bus and leading the
passengers in a sing-along, "Shirley''s Wild Accordion" is not used.
One piece that is used, however, is "Jessie''s Dream", which is
    copyrighted by McCartney-Starkey-Harrison-Lennon. But the
specifics of who plays on the piece and when and where it was
recorded (not at EMI) are unknown.
    1968
"Hey Jude" is the #1 single in the US for the third week in a row.
    [J] 1969
Yoko suffers her second miscarriage, the baby having been expected
    to be born in December.
    [P] 1972
A promotional video for the Wings single "Mary Had a Little Lamb"
is broadcast on US television on "The Flip Wilson Show".
    [B] 1979
UK re-release of Beatles LP "The Beatles Rarities" (Parlophone).
First release as an individual album; previously released as part
of the 13-LP "The Beatles Collection" box set. Highest chart
    position: #71.
    [G] 1987
UK release of George Harrison single "Got My Mind Set on You/Lay
His Head" (Dark Horse). The B-side song was previously released on
special CD and EP issued with George Harrison''s book "Songs by
George Harrison". A different mix of that song had been originally
planned for Harrison''s "Somewhere in England" album.
    [R] 1990
US release of Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band CD, LP, and
cassette "Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band" (Rykodisc). Recorded
live at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, September 3-4, 1989.
Songs: "It Don''t Come Easy", "No No Song", "Honey Don''t", "You''re
Sixteen", "Photograph", "Iko Iko" (Dr. John), "The Weight" (Levon
Helm), "Shine Silently" (Nils Lofgren), "Quarter to Three"
(Clarence Clemmons), "Raining in My Heart" (Rick Danko), "Will it
Go Round in Circles" (Billy Preston) and "Life in the Fast Lane"
(Joe Walsh). A limited deluxe e***ion of the album contained a
bonus CD that contains the songs "Act Naturally", "It Don''t Come
Easy", and "Rocky Mountain Way" (Joe Walsh).

    Hamburg, West Germany.
    [B] 1962
The Beatles perform a night show at the ****rn Club.
    [B] 1963
The Beatles perform live on the Associated TeleVision program "Val
Parnell''s Sunday Night at the London Palladium". This is their
most important television appearance yet, on one of Britain''s most
popular programs (about 15 million viewers). The Beatles topped
the bill, and their performance gives the British public their
first glimpse of Beatlemania. The screaming fans, the crowd
blocking Argyll Street, and the unbelievable enthusiasm of The
Beatles'' fans are all covered extensively by the delighted
reporters and photographers present. The press, in search of a
term to use to define the phenomenon, coined the word
"Beatlemania", which has been used ever since. The Beatles perform
"From Me to You", "I''ll Get You", "She Loves You", and "Twist and
Shout". Unnerved by their inability to announce songs before
playing them, John Lennon shouts "Shut Up!" at the screaming fans,
causing the adults in the audience to applaud. After the show
there is absolutely no question in anyone''s mind--The Beatles are
BIG! "The Beatles Anthology 1" includes this show''s performance of
    "I''ll Get You" (Disc 1, Track 28).
    [B] 1964
The Beatles, on tour in Britain, perform at the ABC Cinema in
    Wigan, Lancashire.
    [B] 1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Recording for the album "Rubber Soul". The Beatles begin
and complete "Drive My Car", in four takes plus overdubs. "Drive
My Car" will be selected to open "Rubber Soul", except in the US,
where it appears on another album altogether, "Yesterday and
    Today".
    [J] 1967
UK release of single "How I Won the War/Aftermath" (United
Artists). The A-side contains a line of dialogue from the movie
"How I Won the War" spoken by John Lennon. The flip side is
    entirely non-Beatles.
    [B] 1968
A promotional video of The Beatles performing "Revolution" is
broadcast on US television, on the CBS-TV program "The Smothers
    Brothers Comedy Hour".
    [B] 1968
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). John Lennon records the 32nd and final song for "The
Beatles" (the White Album), his song "Julia". He tapes it alone,
twice singing to his acoustic guitar accompaniment. This is the
only song released by The Beatles on which John performs alone.
"Julia" is completed and mixed. Take 2 of "Julia" was released on
"The Beatles Anthology 3"; this version breaks down and features
John, who is in the studio, and Paul, who is up in the control
room, discussing the take (Disc one, Track 27).
    [B] 1980
UK release of Beatles compilation LP "The Beatles Ballads - 20
Original Tracks" (Parlophone). Songs: "Yesterday", "Norwegian
Wood", "Do You Want to Know a Secret", "For No One", "Michelle",
"Nowhere Man", "You''ve Got to Hide Your Love Away", "Across the
Universe", "All My Loving", "Hey Jude", "Something", "The Fool on
the Hill", "Till There Was You", "The Long and Winding Road", "Here
Comes the Sun", "Blackbird", "And I Love Her", "She''s Leaving
Home", "Here, There and Everywhere", and "Let It Be". Highest
    chart position: #17.

appearance for the television program "Scene at 6:30". They
lip-sync to "I Should Have Known Better". Broadcast on October 16.
    [B] 1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the ABC
    Cinema in Ardwick, Manchester.
    [B] 1968
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The last recording session for "The Beatles" (the White
Album). Ad***ional overdubs complete George''s song "Savoy
    Truffle".
    [J] 1971
John and Yoko appear on New York public television station WNET, on
    the program "Free Time".
    [P] 1997
Sir Paul McCartney''s classical symphony, "Standing Stone", is given
its premiere performance at London''s Royal Albert Hall. Paul is
given six curtain calls. Critical reaction is mixed.

    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1960
In a small Hamburg recording studio, the Akustik, The Beatles
(minus Pete Best) and two members of Rory Storm''s Hurricanes (Ringo
Starr and Lou "Wally" Walters) record a version of George
Gershwin''s "Summertime", which is cut onto a 78-rpm disc. This is
the first session that includes John, Paul, George, and Ringo
together. Two other songs are recorded, but Ringo plays on those
without John, Paul, or George. Nine discs are cut, but only one is
    known to have survived.
    1961
The Beatles perform in the afternoon at Albany Cinema, Northway,
Maghull, Liverpool. This appearance is for a charity concert to
benefit the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The Beatles play for only
ten minutes, being somewhat out-of-place among the civic
dignitaries in the audience and the other stage acts (a comedian,
an organist, a jazz outfit, a country and western group, and an
operatic singer). The event was arranged by Jim Gretty, C&W
    guitarist and part-time guitar salesman.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Majestic Ballroom, Birkenhead.
    1963
The Beatles perform at Floral Hall in Southport.
    1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Globe
Cinema in Stockton-on-Tees. They also tape a television interview
in their hotel room; it is broadcast the following day on the news
    program "North-East Newsview".
    [R] 1976
UK release of Ringo Starr single "A Dose of Rock and Roll/Cryin''"
    (Polydor).
    [J] 1979
John and Yoko contribute $1,000 to a fund to buy bulletproof vests
for New York City police officers.
    1982
US release of yet another Beatles compilation LP, "The Beatles - 20
Greatest Hits" (Capitol). Songs: "She Loves You", "Love Me Do", "I
Want to Hold Your Hand", "Can''t Buy Me Love", "A Hard Day''s Night",

Lane", "All You Need Is Love", "Hello Goodbye", "Hey Jude" (short
version), "Get Back", "Come Together", "Let It Be", and "The Long
    and Winding Road".
    [J] 1989
US re-release of John Lennon single "Nobody Told Me/I''m Steppin''
Out" (Polydor). Polydor''s ''Timepieces'' series. Both songs were
previously released as the A-sides of singles.

    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1960
The Beatles'' contract with Bruno Koschmider is extended until
December 31, although events would see all of them except Stu
Sutcliffe back in England by December 10.
    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club, Liverpool - a lunchtime
    show.
    1962
The Beatles perform at La Scala Ballroom, Runcorn, Cheshire, 14
    miles south of Liverpool.
    1963
The Beatles tape an appearance for the BBC radio program "Easy
Beat". In front of a live audience, they perform "I Saw Her
Standing There", "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "From Me to
You", and "She Loves You". Recorded at the Playhouse Theatre,
London, and broadcast on October 20. Brian Epstein, fearing for
The Beatles'' safety and trying to limit the seemingly unlimited
requests for Beatles appearances, announced that The Beatles would
no longer appear on radio shows involving a live audience; for
concerts The Beatles would only play in theatres or halls with
fixed seating--no more ballrooms. After the taping for "Easy
Beat", The Beatles are interviewed about the invitation they had
received to perform at the Royal Variety Show on November 4. The
interviewer is clearly condescending to The Beatles, but they just
as clearly deflate his arrogance with their clever wit. The
interview is broadcast that evening on the BBC news program "Radio
Newsreel". One of the recordings from this day is included on the
1994 Beatles double-CD "Live at the BBC"--"I Saw Her Standing
    There" (Disc one, Track 27).
    1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the ABC
    Cinema in Hull.
    1965
"Yesterday" is the #1 single in the US for the second week in a
    row.
    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The Beatles record a song for their next single, "Day
Tripper". After three takes of the basic instrumental track, they
add vocals and other overdubs, completing the song before the end
of the session. Then they record a basic rhythm track for George
Harrison''s song "If I Needed Someone", leaving the overdubbing of
vocals and ad***ional instruments for the following day.
    1968
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studios One, Two, and Three,
and Rooms 41/42, EMI Studios, London). Needing to get mixing,
e***ing, and the running order for "The Beatles" completed, The
Beatles conduct a 24-hour session that utilizes, at some point
during that time, every studio and listening room at EMI Studios.
Ringo and George having already departed for Sardinia and Los
Angeles, respectively, it is left to John and Paul and George
Martin to finish everything up. "What''s the New Mary Jane" and
"Not Guilty" are dropped from the album, leaving 30 songs. Then
the running order and side allocations are worked out. George
Martin had urged The Beatles to cull the material down to one
album''s worth of songs, thinking that the album included tracks of
dubious quality, but The Beatles insisted on releasing all of it.
"The Beatles", released in a stark white cover that would earn it
the nickname ''the White Album'', will be issued in Britain on
November 22, 1968. Released in the US on November 25, it would
sell nearly two million copies within the first week. It remains
one of the most popular of The Beatles'' albums. [Note: "The
Beatles" was issued in both mono and stereo versions in the UK, but
it was released only in stereo in the US].
    [G] 1968
George Harrison flies to the USA to produce seven weeks of
recording sessions for Jackie Lomax''s "Is This What You Want?"
    album.
    1972
Re-release in Sweden of Beatles LP "Magical Mystery Tour" (Hor Zu).
    [G] 1987
US release of George Harrison single "Got My Mind Set On You/Lay
His Head" (Dark Horse). Also released as cassette single. The
B-side is a remixed version of a song released on either CD or
vinyl EP included with George Harrison''s book "Songs by George
    Harrison".
    [G] 1992
George Harrison joins a number of other musicians for a 30th
anniversary tribute concert for Bob Dylan at New York''s Madison
Square Garden. Harrison sings the Dylan songs "If Not For You" and
"Absolutely Sweet Marie". He also joins in on the concert''s final
songs, "Knockin'' on Heaven''s Door" and "My Back Pages". The event
is broadcast live on pay-per-view cable television in the US. The
Harrison songs, with the exception of "If Not For You", are among
the songs released on August 24, 1993, on an album of the concert.
    [P] 1999
Premiere performance of Paul McCartney''s "Working Classical" in
Liverpool, England. Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
Songs for orchestra and string quartet. Some of the string quartet
arrangements were previosuly played at memorial services held for
McCartney''s late wife, Linda. The album "Working Classical" is
scheduled for release on October 19, 1999.

In between their lunchtime and night shows at the ****rn Club, The
Beatles travel to Studio Four, Granada TV Centre, Manchester,
Lancashire, to make their television debut. They appear live on a
local magazine program called "People and Places", which is
broadcast across north and northwest England. After two rehearsals
lasting nearly three hours, The Beatles perform two songs for the
live transmission, "Some Other Guy" and "Love Me Do".
    [B] 1963
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The Beatles worked on three recording projects in one
day: 1) a failed attempt to improve their track "You Really Got a
Hold On Me" for the "With the Beatles" LP, 2) recording their 5th
single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand/This Boy", and 3) recording "The
Beatles'' Christmas Record", the first of seven annual Christmas
records distributed free to members of their fan club (the second
Christmas record would be the first one issued to fan club members
in the US). This session was also important in that it marked the
introduction of four-track recording at EMI, which allowed for more
creativity in the studio. The Beatles used this new recording
process for "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "This Boy", both of
which were completed in 17 takes. Parlophone released the single
on November 29. The Beatles then recorded the 12th take of "You
Really Got a Hold On Me", finally deciding to not try any
    ad***ional takes.

    [B] 1957
The Quarry Men perform at New Clubmoor Hall (Conservative Club),
Norris Green, Liverpool. This is Paul McCartney''s first appearance
with the group. The line-up for The Quarry Men is John Lennon,
Paul McCartney, Eric Griffiths, Colin Hanton, and Len Garry. Paul
McCartney, suffering from a case of the stage jitters, flubs his
guitar solo on the song "Guitar Boogie". Upset with his playing,
Paul tries to make amends by showing John a song he had written, "I
Lost My Little Girl". John then shows Paul some songs that he has
composed. The two start writing songs together from that moment,
which marks the birth of the Lennon-McCartney songwriting
partnership. Pete Shotton, out of the group by this time, had no
real musical ability and knew it; he was almost relieved when,
during a drunken argument, John Lennon had smashed Pete''s washboard
over Pete''s head. That was the end of Pete Shotton''s career as a
    Quarry Man.

Johnny and the Moondogs au***ion for Carroll Levis'' "TV Star
Search", at Liverpool''s Empire Theatre. They qualify for the final
round of competition. The previous week, Jett Storm & the
Hurricanes (including drummer Ringo Starr) had also qualified for
the final round [''Jett'' Storm would later change his stage name to
''Rory'' Storm]. The exact date of this au***ion is not known for
certain, but October 18 is the best guess. At the end of the
month, the local finals are also held at the Empire Theatre, and
even though Johnny and the Moondogs do not win, they place high
enough to qualify for the last round of au***ions.

(1 take); and "Words of Love" (3 takes). For the next single, The
Beatles record "I Feel Fine" (9 takes), and they experiment
successfully with intentional amplifier feedback to begin the song.
The "I Feel Fine/She''s a Woman" single is released on November 27.
[Note: The Beatles had recorded four takes of "Mr. Moonlight" on
Aug. 14, but wanted to improve upon those performances]. "The

recording three basic tracks and overdubs. Except for a gap in the
middle section (which will be filled with a George Martin piano
solo on Oct. 22), the song is completed.

    [B] 1996
Beatles publicist Geoff Baker announces that "The Beatles are now
bigger than The Beatles". His statement is based upon the fact
that the year 1996 is expected to be the biggest year for album
sales ever for The Beatles. Thus far in 1996, The Beatles have
sold 6,000,000 albums from their back catalog and a combined total
of 13,000,000 copies of "The Beatles Anthology 1" and "The Beatles
Anthology 2". With the release of "The Beatles Anthology 3" only a
week away, it is anticipated that total Beatles album sales for
1996 will exceed 20 million. Somewhat surprisingly, studies show
that 41 percent of those sales are to teenagers who were not even
born yet when The Beatles officially called it quits in 1970.

tour is "Long Tall Sally", "Please Please Me", "I Saw Her Standing
There", "From Me to You", "A Taste of Honey", "Chains", "Boys",
"She Loves You", and "Twist and Shout". Beatlemania is present in
full force, so The Beatles play to enthusiastic, screaming fans.
The local pop reviewer was not impressed, though. He considers The
Beatles'' music to be awful, and he suggests that The Beatles should
be grateful to their screaming fans for drowning out the group''s
terrible performance. The reviewer went on to say that The Beatles
"...were of no musical importance whatsoever and that their local
support group, The Phantoms, decidedly outshone them" (Lewisohn).

    yet another #1).
    [B] 1965
At Buckingham Palace, The Beatles receive their MBE''s from Queen
Elizabeth II. The media give extensive coverage to the event, with
The Beatles conducting a press conference at the Saville Theatre

The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1961
The Beatles perform at Aintree Institute, Aintree, Liverpool.
    1961
According to Beatles legend, it was on this day that a fan named
Raymond Jones attempted to purchase the single "My Bonnie" from
Brian Epstein''s NEMS record store in Liverpool. Brian managed the
record shop, which was part of a large department store owned by
his father. The legend states that this was the first occasion on
which Brian Epstein heard of the single or, indeed, of The Beatles.
"Mersey Beat" e***or Bill Harry discounts this story as
improbable. Harry claims to have discussed The Beatles and other
local groups with Epstein well before this date, and he adds that
Epstein was already writing record reviews for "Mersey Beat" and
selling copies of the paper in his shop. Further, Epstein was
selling tickets to Sam Leach''s ''Operation Big Beat'' concert, and
The Beatles'' name was at the top of the list of groups that were
scheduled to appear at the November 10 event.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool. This is a
major performance for The Beatles, their first at Liverpool''s top

plays to two separate "houses" (two performances for two different
audiences, one at 5:40 pm and the other at 8:00 pm). Heading the
bill is Little Richard; also appearing is Craig Douglas (for whom
The Beatles provide musical backing in ad***ion to their own,
separate performance), Jet Harris (ex-Shadows bass player), and
Kenny Lynch & Sounds Incorporated. In Liverpudlian terms, The
Beatles have hit the big time.
    1962
Beatles manager Brian Epstein arranges for The Beatles to be
included in a Helen Shapiro package tour scheduled for February
    1963.
    1963
The Beatles, on tour in Sweden, perform at the Borashallen, Boras,
Sweden. Preceding the show, The Beatles had spent half an hour in
a record shop in Boras, autographing records.
    1964
The Beatles, resuming their tour of Britain, perform two shows at
    the ABC Cinema in Exeter.
    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio One, EMI Studios,
London). The Beatles, listening to a rough mono mix of "We Can
Work It Out", realize that the vocal tracks are not good enough,
and they make plans to overdub the vocals the following day.

John and Yoko record "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" with the Harlem

Rehearsals and recording take about two hours (11:00 am to 1:00
pm). The Beatles perform two songs, "Love Me Do" and "A Taste of
Honey". In an unusual stage setting (for The Beatles, at least),
"Love Me Do" is taped with Paul, George, and Ringo standing, but
John, without an instrument, is sitting and singing in the style of
a solo singer backed by a supporting group. For "A Taste of

    date as being October 28].

The Beatles perform a lunchtime show at the ****rn Club, Liverpool.
    [B] 1961
Two days after Beatles fan Raymond Jones asked for The Beatles''
German single "My Bonnie" (recorded with Tony Sheridan) at Brian
Epstein''s NEMS record store, two girls ask for the same record.
Brian Epstein begins to search foreign record company import lists
to find the single. Since Epstein had already sold at least 12
dozen copies of Liverpool''s "Mersey Beat" magazine (and had written
a column for it), it is highly unlikely that he doesn''t already
know who The Beatles are. Still, Epstein''s difficulty in locating
the record is probably due to his not knowing that the record was
released, not by The Beatles, but by Tony Sheridan and ''The Beat
Brothers'' (''Beatles'' resembles a vulgar slang word in German, so
The Beatles'' name was changed for this historic single).
    [B] 1962
The Beatles fly to Hamburg for their fourth engagement, this one to
last a mere 14 nights (at the Star-Club).
    [B] 1963
Before returning to England following the conclusion of their
Swedish tour, The Beatles travel to Narren-teatern, Grona Lund,
Stockholm, Sweden, to tape an appearance for the Sverige Television
program "Drop In". Taping is done before a live audience.
Originally scheduled to perform only two songs, The Beatles are
asked by the promoter (Klas Burling) to perform four songs. They
record "She Loves You", "Twist and Shout", "I Saw Her Standing
There", and "Long Tall Sally". The Beatles very clearly had a
great time during this session. Broadcast on November 3.
    [B] 1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Gaumont
    Cinema in Bournemouth.
    [O] 1964
UK release of Alma Cogan single "It''s You/I Knew Right Away"
(Columbia). Paul McCartney plays tambourine on the B-side. Not
released in the US. [Note: one source gives Sept. 30 as the
release date and claims that it is the A-side on which McCartney
plays tambourine.] Cogan was Britain''s top female singer of the
fifties, and she was a close friend of Brian Epstein''s (at one time
it had been rumored that they would marry). She became good
friends with The Beatles, and in 1965 Cogan released two singles
with cover versions of Beatles songs: "Yesterday" and "Eight Days a
Week/Help!" She died of cancer at the age of 34 on October 26,
    1966.
    [B] 1965
"Yesterday" is the #1 single in the US for the 4th week in a row.
    [P] 1967
Paul McCartney and cameraman Aubrey Dewar fly to Nice, France, to
film the "The Fool on the Hill" sequence. They spend Oct. 31
filming a variety of random scenes with a "daydream sequence"
approach. They return to England on November 1.
    [J] 1971
John Lennon''s "Imagine" LP reaches #1 in the US charts.
    [B] 1989
UK re-release of Beatles single "Something/Come Together"
(Parlophone). 20th anniversary reissue. Released as a regular
single and also as a picture disc.
    [J] 1990

Lennon''s 50th birthday. Issued only in CD format. Contains 73
songs: "Give Peace a Chance", "Blue Suede Shoes", "Money", "Dizzy
Miss Lizzy" and "Yer Blues" [first release on CD of these tracks
from the 1969 "Live Peace in Toronto" LP]; "Cold Turkey", "Instant

"Isolation", "Remember", "Love", "Well Well Well", "Look At Me",

"Jealous Guy", "It''s So Hard", "Give Me Some Truth", "Oh My Love",
"How Do You Sleep?", "How?", "Oh, Yoko!", "Happy Xmas (War Is
Over)", "Woman Is the Nigger of the World", "New York City", "John
Sinclair", "Come Together", "Hound Dog" [previous two tracks live
Aug. 30, 1972], "Mind Games", "Aisumasen (I''m Sorry)", "One Day (at
a Time)", "Intuition", "Out the Blue", "Whatever Gets You Through
the Night", "Going Down on Love", "Old Dirt Road", "Bless You",

"Stand By Me", "Ain''t That a Shame", "Do You Want to Dance", "Sweet
Little Sixteen", "Slippin'' and Slidin''", "Angel Baby" [same
extended version as appears on "Menlove Avenue" album]; "Just
Because", "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", "Lucy in the Sky
with Diamonds" and "I Saw Her Standing There" [the previous 3 songs
recorded live with Elton John on Nov. 28, 1974 - first CD release
of these tracks]; "(Just Like) Starting Over", "Cleanup Time",
"I''m Losing You", "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)", "Watching the
Wheels", "Woman", "Dear Yoko", "I''m Stepping Out", "I Don''t Wanna
Face It", "Nobody Told Me", "Borrowed Time", "(Forgive Me) My
Little Flower Princess", "Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him", and
"Grow Old With Me". Technically, the US release was an import,
since Capitol pressed no copies but imported them from Europe.
Early copies omitted the track listing for "Imagine", but this was
corrected on later copies. [Note: the song "Give Me Some Truth"
was originally titled "Gimme Some Truth"][Note 2: the song "Dizzy
Miss Lizzy" was originally spelled "Dizzy Miss Lizzie"].
    [G] 1990
US release of Traveling Wilburys CD, LP and cassette "The Traveling
Wilburys Volume 3" (Wilbury/Warner Brothers). This is the
Wilburys'' second album - there was no volume two. The members''
pseudonyms were changed to Spike Wilbury (George Harrison), Muddy
Wilbury (Tom Petty), Clayton Wilbury (Jeff Lynne), and Boo Wilbury
(Bob Dylan). The album is dedicated to Lefty Wilbury (the late Roy
Orbison). Songs: "She''s My Baby", "The Devil''s Been Busy", "Where
Were You Last Night?", "Wilbury Twist", "If You Belonged to Me",
"Inside Out", "Seven Deadly Sins", "Poor House", "Cool Dry Place",
"New Blue Moon", and "You Took My Breath Away".

Paul McCartney''s mother dies from breast cancer. Paul is only 14
years old. Mary McCartney, a midwife, had ignored pains in her
chest, dismissing them as symptoms of menopause. By the time she
had consulted a doctor and had undergone surgery, it was too
late--the cancer had spread. Paul is devastated and buries his
grief in his growing obsession with music.

    [B] 1963
A momentous day for The Beatles. They return to London from
Sweden. Arriving at Heathrow Airport, they are greeted by hundreds
of screaming fans and a mob of photographers and journalists. For
the first time, The Beatles themselves realize the extent of their
phenomenal popularity and of Beatlemania. American television host
Ed Sullivan was at Heathrow when The Beatles arrived, and he was
struck by the sight of Beatlemania in full swing; he decided to
look into getting this group to appear on his US television
    program.

With The Beatles having no new album for Christmas, George Martin
begins remixing previously-released Beatles tracks for a
compilation album to be released in lieu of new Beatles''
material--"A Collection of Beatles Oldies". The 16-song album
includes the first UK release of "Bad Boy". The album serves to
wrap up The Beatles'' early career and the "Rubber Soul"/"Revolver"
transitional periods. What is to follow will be something only
hinted at in the latter recordings.
    [P] 1968
Linda Eastman moves to London to live with Paul McCartney. Linda''s
four-year-old daughter, Heather, joins them. Paul and Linda will

The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club at lunchtime and then again
    at night.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. The
first night of a 14-night stand. They share the bill with Little
Richard, and they play three and one-half hours each night.
    1963
UK release of Beatles EP "The Beatles (No. 1)" (Parlophone).
Songs: "I Saw Her Standing There", "Misery", "Anna", and "Chains".
    Highest chart position: #2.
    1963
The Beatles begin a lengthy tour of Britain, performing two shows
at the Odeon Cinema in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Their
repertoire for the tour is "I Saw Her Standing There", "From Me to
You", "All My Loving", "You Really Got a Hold On Me", "Roll Over
Beethoven", "Boys", "Till There Was You", "She Loves You", "Money",
and "Twist and Shout". Not that the song selection mattered very
much--the screaming had become so loud that no one could hear much
more than a few notes of music, not even The Beatles themselves.
Supporting The Beatles are The Rhythm & Blues Quartet, The Vernons
Girls, Frank Berry, The Brook Brothers, Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers,
and The Kestrels. For each night on the tour The Beatles earn 300
    pounds.
    [O] 1963
UK release of the Rolling Stones'' single "I Wanna Be Your Man"
(Decca). The song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
John and Paul had visited with the Rolling Stones and had offered
the partially-written song to them. After the Rolling Stones
expressed interest in the fragment of the song that John and Paul
played for them, Lennon and McCartney went into another room for
about ten minutes and completed the song. "I Wanna Be Your Man"
went on to become the Rolling Stones'' first Top Twenty hit.
Released in the US on February 17, 1964.
    [O] 1963
UK release of Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas single "I''ll Keep You
Satisfied" (Parlophone). The song, cre***ed to Lennon-McCartney,
was written by Paul McCartney. Highest UK chart position: number
    4. Released in the US on November 11 (Liberty Records), where it
will peak at number 30 in the charts. The Beatles themselves never
recorded the song, although a demo tape was probably made for
    George Martin and Kramer.
    1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Astoria
    Cinema in Finsbury Park, London.
    1965
The Beatles take part in rehearsals and filming for a television
special, "The Music of Lennon & McCartney", which will feature The
Beatles and other artists performing Lennon-McCartney songs. The
Beatles lip-sync to "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" (John
"playing" harmonium instead of guitar on the second song). The
Beatles pretend to be playing to a studio audience, but the
accompanying applause is overdubbed later. The songs performed,
and the artists who performed them, are as follows: a song medley
(The George Martin Orchestra); "A World Without Love" (Peter and
Gordon); "I Saw Him Standing There" (Lulu); "From Me to You" (Alan
Haven and Tony Crombie); "She Loves You"/medley (Fritz Spiegel''s
Ensemble); "Day Tripper" (Beatles); "Yesterday" (begun by Paul
McCartney, taken over by Marianne Faithfull); "She Loves You"
(Antonio Vargas); "Things We Said Today" (sung in French by Dick
Rivers); "Bad to Me" (Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas); "It''s For
You" (Cilla Black); "Ringo''s Theme (This Boy)" (the George Martin
Orchestra); "If I Fell" (Henry Mancini); "And I Love Him" (Esther
Phillips); "A Hard Day''s Night" (Peter Sellers); and "We Can Work
It Out" (Beatles). Broadcast on December 16 (in London) and
December 17 (the rest of Britain). Recorded at Granada TV Centre,
    Manchester.
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). "All You Need Is Love" and "Lucy in the Sky with
Diamonds" are mixed into mono for the soundtrack of the movie
"Yellow Submarine". Then applause sound effects are assembled for
use in the movie. Lastly, reduction mixdowns are made of "Hello
Goodbye" and stereo mixes are prepared for "The Fool on the Hill".
    [G] 1968
UK release of George Harrison soundtrack LP "Wonderwall Music"
(Apple). Harrison composed the film score. First album released
    on Apple label.
    1969
The Beatles'' LP "Abbey Road" reaches #1 in the US charts.
    [J] 1974
John Lennon asks permission from a US court to question the
Immigration and Naturalization Service about its motivation for
wanting to deport him. He also wants to ask about former US
Attorney General John Mitchell''s role in the affair.
    [J] 1982
UK release of John Lennon compilation LP "The John Lennon
Collection" (Parlophone). Songs: "Give Peace a Chance", "Instant
Karma", "Power to the People", "Happy Xmas (War is Over)",
"Whatever Gets You Through the Night", "Stand By Me", "#9 Dream",
"Mind Games", "Love", "Imagine", "Jealous Guy", "(Just Like)
Starting Over", "Woman", "I''m Losing You", "Beautiful Boy (Darling
Boy)", "Watching the Wheels", and "Dear Yoko". [Note: The album
will be re-released in the UK on October 23, 1989, with two
ad***ional tracks, "Move Over Ms. L" and "Cold Turkey".]
** The following events all took place sometime in November. **
    [J] 1966
In early November 1966, John Lennon records (at least) four demos
of his new song "Strawberry Fields Forever". One of those demos
was released on "The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc two, Track one).
    1968
The Beatles separately record contributions for "The Beatles 1968
Christmas Record", which is released to fan club members on
December 20. Visiting George Harrison while George was in the USA
producing a Jackie Lomax album, singer Tiny Tim recorded the
Beatles song "Nowhere Man" for inclusion on the Christmas record.
    [J] 1968
John and Yoko tape a 40-minute interview with a Dutch sociologist
and writer, the interview taking place in the waiting room of a
dentist in London. Yoko was alone for the first half of the
interview while John was being treated by the dentist. Broadcast
in The Netherlands on January 15, 1969.
    [G] 1968
George Harrison records the instrumental track "No Time or Space",
the track appearing on Harrison''s "Electronic Sound" LP. Bernie
Krause has claimed that it is his performance on this track, which
was recorded as he demonstrated the new Moog synthesizer for
George. Krause had provided some synthesizer effects for the
Jackie Lomax album that George was producing.
    [P] 1977
    Joe English departs from Wings.
    [J] 1980
John Lennon records a demo of the unreleased song "Dear John", one
of the last songs he ever composed (and perhaps the very last).
    [J] 1981
US re-release of John Lennon single "Happy Xmas (War is Over)
[John, Yoko, others]/Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) [John]" (Geffen).
    Originally released with alternate B-side.
    1982
US release of Beatles LP "The Silver Beatles" (Audio Rarities).
Picture disc containing 10 of the 15 songs from the Jan, 1, 1962,
    Decca au***ion.
    1986
US release of Beatles interview LP "Here There and Everywhere"
(Cicadelic). Interviews taped by Derek Taylor during the filming
of the movie "Help!" in the Bahamas, Feb.-Mar. 1965.
    [P] 1988
US re-release of Paul McCartney albums on CD: "Red Rose Speedway"
(with bonus tracks "The Mess", "I Lie Around", and "Country
Dreamer"); "Venus and Mars" (with bonus tracks "Zoo Gang", "Lunch
Box-Odd Sox", and "My Carnival"); and "McCartney II" (with bonus
tracks "Check My Machine" and "Secret Friend").
    [J] 1996
Release of "The Rolling Stones'' Rock and Roll Circus", filmed in
December 1968, on videocassette and laserdisc. This is the first
time the film has been issued. When it was originally decided to
postpone release of the film, the metal canisters containing the
original film were stacked in odd places, such as under a
secretary''s desk and in a bathroom, because no one knew what to do
with them. The Stones'' road manager, Ian Stewart, hoping to
protect the film from being lost, put the canisters in his barn,
only he didn''t tell anyone that he had done so. Eventually the
Stones assumed the film was forever lost, occasionally wondering
where it might have gone to. After Stewart''s death, his widow
found the film canisters in the barn, underneath a lawnmower and a
pair of boots. The finally-released show features an appearance by
John Lennon. He performs "Yer Blues", playing rhythm guitar,
accompanied by Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Keith Richard (bass),
and Mitch Mitchell (drums), the ''group'' going by the name ''The
Dirty Mac''. Later, the four of them are joined by Yoko Ono and
violinist Ivry Gitlis for a standard blues jam, called "Her Blues",
featuring Yoko Ono''s free-form vocalizing. Also performing in the
film are The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and,
of course, The Rolling Stones. The guitarist appearing with Jethro
Tull is Tony Iommi, who will later become a founding member of
Black Sabbath; Iommi was with Jethro Tull for only a few weeks,
filling in for the recently-departed Mick Abrahams.

The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Recording the final overdub for "Hello Goodbye" (a second
Paul McCartney bass line). "Hello Goodbye" is then mixed into mono
for the last time. It has been selected for the A-side of The
Beatles'' next single, the flip side to be John''s "I Am the Walrus"
(released on November 24 in the UK and November 27 in the US).
John was quite irritated that his complex song was being stuck onto
the B-side of the single, while Paul''s song (which he considered to
be somewhat inane) was made the A-side. While John''s feelings are
easily understood from an artistic point of view, there can''t be
much doubt that "Hello Goodbye" possessed a greater commercial
potential than "I Am the Walrus" did.
    [B] 1968
"Hey Jude" is the #1 single in the US for the sixth week in a row.
    [R] 1973
US release of Ringo Starr LP "Ringo" (Apple). Songs: "I''m the

in Vancouver. Supporting musicians for the tour are Billy Preston,
Ravi Shankar, Tom Scott, Chuck Findley, Jim Horn, Robben Ford, Andy
Newmark, Willie Weeks, and Emil Richards. George is suffering from
laryngitis, and so the tour will generally be regarded as somewhat
    of a failure.

Yoko Ono''s LP "It''s Alright (I See Rainbows)" is released in the
US. John''s shouts are heard on the song "Never Say Goodbye".
    [G] 1987
Release of George Harrison LP, cassette, and CD "Cloud Nine" in the
US (Dark Horse) and the UK (Dark Horse). Songs: "Got My Mind Set
On You", "When We Was Fab", "Cloud 9", "That''s What it Takes",
"Fish On the Sand", "Just For Today", "This Is Love", "Devil''s
Radio", "Someplace Else", "Wreck of the Hesperus", and "Breath Away
From Heaven". The songs "Someplace Else" and "Breath Away From
Heaven" had previously appeared on the soundtrack for the film
"Shanghai Surprise", but both songs were re-recorded for this
    album.
    [P] 1987
UK release of Paul McCartney compilation double CD, double LP, and
double cassette "All the Best" (Parlophone). The track listings in

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club - a night show.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany.
    1963
The Beatles perform their legendary Royal Command Performance at
the Prince of Wales Theatre, London, before the Queen Mother and
Princess Margaret. Technically The Beatles were 7th on a 19-act
bill, but there was no doubt that they were, in fact, the main
attraction. The Beatles called upon their masterful showmanship to
put on a stunning four-song performance. They began playing their
first song, "From Me to You", before the curtain opened. John and
Paul, at the end of the first song, moved their microphones nearer
to the audience. After playing their second song, "She Loves You",
The Beatles bowed to the audience. A nervous Paul cracked a joke
about Sophie Tucker being The Beatles'' favorite American group,
then they performed "Till There Was You". At the end of that song,
Paul and John moved their microphone stands back to their original
position. After waiting for the applause to die down, John
introduced "Twist and Shout", requesting that persons in the
cheaper seats join in by clapping their hands, while everyone else
should just "rattle your jewelry". At the end of "Twist and
Shout", Ringo came down from his drum kit and joined the others; as
the curtain closed behind them, they bowed to the audience, then
they bowed to the royal box, and then they ran off the stage to
thunderous applause. The show was taped for later broadcast on
both television and radio. Their entire performance was broadcast
on television, by ATV, on November 10. BBC radio broadcast all but
"She Loves You", also on November 10. The Beatles were a sensation
all across Britain, the Royal Command Performance being a huge
triumph for them. The Beatles were the entertainment kings in the
UK; soon they would be ready to tackle America and the rest of the
world. Three of the performances ("She Loves You", "Till There Was
You", and "Twist and Shout") are included on "The Beatles Anthology
    1" (Disc 2, Tracks 1-3).
    1964
UK release of Beatles EP "Extracts from the Film A Hard Day''s
Night" (Parlophone). Songs: "I Should Have Known Better", "If I
Fell", "Tell Me Why" and "And I Love Her". Highest chart position:
    #1.
    1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Ritz
    Cinema, Luton, Bedfordshire.
    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). With the deadline for their next album looming large, The
Beatles start working well past midnight during recording sessions,
and they begin looking for previously discarded songs that can be
used. One such song is "What Goes On", which The Beatles record in
one take and then add vocal overdubs. Then The Beatles try
recording an instrumental number, "12-Bar Original". Take one
breaks down, but take two is completed, its length 6 mins 36 secs.
No overdubs are recorded. George Harrison plays tone-pedal lead
guitar, George Martin harmonium, John Lennon lead guitar, Paul
McCartney bass, and Ringo Starr drums. "The Beatles Anthology 2"
includes a 2 mins 54 secs portion of the 6 mins 36 secs take 2 of
"12-Bar Original" (Disc one, Track 16).
    [P] 1974
US release of Paul McCartney and Wings single "Junior''s Farm/Sally
G" (Apple). 17 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #3.
    [G] 1974
George Harrison performs at Seattle, Washington.
    [G] 1981
US re-release of George Harrison single "All Those Year
Ago/Teardrops" (Dark Horse). Both songs previously issued as the
    A-side of different singles.
    [J] 1981
US re-release of John Lennon single "Watching the Wheels/Beautiful
Boy (Darling Boy)" (Geffen). Originally released with alternate
    B-side.

Brian Epstein flies to the US with Billy J. Kramer for a
promotional visit. While there, Epstein meets with television
variety show host Ed Sullivan, who wants to let the American
audience see the latest crazy fad from overseas on his program. To
Sullivan''s astonishment, Epstein insists that The Beatles be given
top billing. Eventually they work out a deal: The Beatles will be
given top billing in return for three appearances on "The Ed
Sullivan Show" (two live, one taped) at a fee that is well below
normal (a total fee of only $10,000). As it turns out, this proves
to be a fantastic bargain for The Beatles, who would reap seemingly
instantaneous fame from their appearances on Sullivan''s television
    show.
    1963
The Beatles tape a television interview in the back of a car
driving around London. Only two Beatles at a time could be shown
on-camera. The interview is broadcast by Associated-Rediffusion,
as part of the program "This Week", on November 7.

The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Gaumont
    Cinema in Southampton.
    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Recording two separate re-makes of "I''m Looking Through
You", the second being overdubbed to completion. However, The
Beatles remain unsatisfied and the song will be re-recorded yet
    again.
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Stereo mixing for "Hello Goodbye", "I Am the Walrus",
"Your Mother Should Know", and "Magical Mystery Tour". Since the
radio feed utilized in "I Am the Walrus" was recorded in mono, the
song changes from stereo to mono at the line "Sitting in an English
    garden".
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko''s film "Rape--Part II" is screened at the Mannheim
    Film Festival in Germany.

    released.

The Quarry Men perform at Wilson Hall, Garston, Liverpool.
    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1961
The Beatles perform a lunchtime show at the ****rn Club, Liverpool.
That night they perform at the Merseyside Civil Service Club,
Liverpool, after which they return to the ****rn Club for a night
    appearance.
    [B] 1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany.
    [B] 1963
The Beatles hop over to Ireland during their British tour to make
their only two appearances in Eire. They are interviewed upon
their arrival at the airport in Dublin, the interview being
broadcast that evening on the RTE television news program "In
Town". With The Beatles is screenwriter Alun Owen, who has been
appointed to write the screenplay for The Beatles'' first (as yet
untitled) motion picture. Owen spends three days with The Beatles
observing their hectic, chaotic lifestyle. That night, The Beatles
perform two shows at the Adelphi Cinema, Dublin, Eire.
    [B] 1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Capitol
    Cinema in Cardiff.
    [J] 1966
John Lennon returns to England, from Spain, following the
completion of filming for "How I Won the War", directed by Richard
Lester. Two nights later he will meet Yoko Ono for the first time.
    [B] 1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio One, EMI Studios,
London). Final mixing of "Blue Jay Way" and "Flying". Paul
McCartney adds vocal and sound effects overdubs to both the mono
and stereo mixes of "Magical Mystery Tour". This marks the
completion of "Magical Mystery Tour". But The Beatles have only
six songs--too few for an album and too many for an EP. The
Beatles and EMI resolve the situation by deciding to issue a
double-EP, with a gatefold sleeve and a 28-page booklet. This will
be released in the UK on December 8, 1967. Capitol Records,
however, doesn''t think the double-EP format would be acceptable for
the US market, so they decide to put out an album instead. The six
"Magical Mystery Tour" songs will go on side one and five of the
six songs from The Beatles'' 1967 singles will go on side two ("I Am
the Walrus", the sixth song from their singles, appears on side one
of the album as a "Magical Mystery Tour" film track). Whereas the
"Magical Mystery Tour" film will be a major failure for The
Beatles, the vinyl releases (the UK double-EP and the US album)
will be major successes. The "Magical Mystery Tour" album will not
be issued in the UK until November 1976; the double-EP UK format
will never be issued in the US.
    [J] 1969
UK release of John Lennon/Yoko Ono LP "Wedding Album" (Apple).
Tracks: "John and Yoko", and "Amsterdam", which includes "John,
John (Let''s Hope for Peace)", "Bed Peace", "Good Night", and
    "Goodbye Amsterdam Goodbye".
    [J] 1996
Yoko Ono opens an exhibit of John Lennon lithographs and
seriagraphs at a shopping mall in California, the Promenade Mall in
Woodland Hills. Hand-signed artworks are available for purchase,
all from limited e***ions of 325. Prices range from $200 to
$12,000 (for lithographs from the 1969 "Bag One" collection).
Praising her dead husband''s work, Yoko says "I''m an artist myself,
and I know I can''t do what he does". When asked if she really
thinks a shopping mall is a suitable location for such an exhibit,
Yoko replies that John created his art for the people, and that his
work is already hanging in the Museum of Modern Art. She points
out that more people go to shopping malls than visit art galleries.

The Beatles tape two interviews for Irish television. The first,
recorded at a spot between Dublin and Belfast, is for Ulster
Television''s "Ulster News". The second, recorded at the BBC''s
Broadcasting House in Belfast, is for the BBC''s news magazine
program "Six Ten". Both are broadcast that evening.

    1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). With time rapidly running out for the completion of
"Rubber Soul" and the need to record a Christmas record for The
Beatles'' fan club members, George Martin deliberately records The
Beatles as they rehearse George Harrison''s song "Think For
Yourself". Martin had hoped they would say something witty that
would be suitable for the Christmas record, but it didn''t turn out
that way. Nonetheless, the recording is kept anyway, and it did
come into use during the production of the film "Yellow Submarine",
when a six-second snippet of John, Paul, and George practicing the
vocal harmonies for "Think For Yourself" is used in the movie. The
Beatles, at this session, work on "Think For Yourself" (originally
titled "Won''t Be There With You"). After rehearsal, one take is
all that is required to get down the basic instrumental track, and
overdubs are recorded. Around 3:00 am The Beatles record a bunch
of unrehearsed material for their Christmas record, leaving it up
to George Martin to make some sense of it all.

"Baby Don''t Run Away", "Dream Away", and "Circles".
    1989
A long-standing suit (20 years) between The Beatles and EMI/Capitol
is resolved. Although details are not revealed, it is widely
reported that EMI/Capitol will pay The Beatles approximately 100
million pounds sterling in back royalties. The Beatles also obtain
greater control over the use of their recordings, including record
    cover artwork.

    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club at lunchtime. That night
they appear at Litherland Town Hall, Liverpool (their final
performance at that venue). This is a major day for The Beatles,
although they are unaware of it at the time--in the audience at the
****rn Club show is Brian Epstein, dressed in his pin-stripe suit
and seeing The Beatles for the first time. Accompanying Epstein is
his assistant Alistair Taylor. Epstein will recall his first
impressions in a 1964 interview: "They were fresh and they were
honest, and they had...star quality. Whatever that is, they had it,
or I sensed that they had it." Over the next few weeks, Epstein
becomes more and more interested in possibly managing The Beatles,
and he does a lot of research into just exactly what that would
entail. When he speaks with the group''s embittered ex-manager
Allan Williams, he is told, "Brian, don''t touch ''em with a ****ing
bargepole." Nonetheless, Epstein invites The Beatles to a meeting
at his record store on December 3.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany.
    1963
The Beatles, continuing on their tour of Britain, perform at the
Granada Cinema in East Ham, London. Backstage, before the first of
their two shows, George Martin informs The Beatles that their
upcoming single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" looks likely to sell one
million copies in advance of its release. This will, in fact,
occur, the first time in the UK that a record notched up sales of
over one million copies in advance of its release.
    1964
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform at City Hall in
    Sheffield.
    [J] 1966
John Lennon attends a special preview of an exhibition by artist
Yoko Ono about to open at the Indica Gallery in London. The
exhibition''s title is "Unfinished Painting and Objects by Yoko
Ono". John and Yoko meet for the first time. They are introduced
    by gallery owner John Dunbar.
    [J] 1967

    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1961
A busy night of live performances for The Beatles. They start off
the evening playing the first of two sets at promoter Sam Leach''s
"Operation Big Beat" at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton, which
draws attendance of over 3,000. The other four groups
participating are Gerry & the Pacemakers, Rory Storm & the
Hurricanes, The Remo Four, and Kingsize Taylor & the Dominoes.
After their first spot, The Beatles rush over to Village Hall in
Knotty Ash for a live performance. Following that, they hurry back
to the Tower Ballroom to perform again. On the way back to the
Tower Ballroom, The Beatles race with Rory Storm and his group, the
Hurricanes, who narrowly avoid crashing their automobile.
    [B] 1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany.
    [B] 1963
The Beatles, touring Britain, perform for two "houses" at the
Hippodrome Theatre in Birmingham. The Beatles later leave the
    theatre disguised as policemen.
    [B] 1964
The Beatles, on the last night of their British tour, perform at
    Colston Hall in Bristol.
    [B] 1965
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The song "The Word" is recorded, from start to finish, in
three takes (plus overdubs). Then, for the third time, The Beatles
work on Paul''s "I''m Looking Through You", laying down another new
instrumental track. Overdubs will be added later.
    [B] 1967
The Beatles film three color promotional films for their new single
"Hello Goodbye". Shooting takes place at the Saville Theatre in
London, directed by Paul McCartney. Each of the three film clips
features different costumes, backgrounds, and Beatle antics. In
the first film, The Beatles wear their "Sgt. Pepper" uniforms in
front of a psychedelic background. John isn''t wearing his glasses
and Ringo''s bass drum does not have The Beatles'' logo. This film
clip also contains inserts of The Beatles in collarless suits (like
they wore in 1963), waving at the camera inanely. Also featured in
this first film are women dancers, dressed Hawaiian-style, who join
The Beatles onstage for the "Maori Finale" ending. For the second
promo film, The Beatles are wearing everyday clothes and the
background is a pastoral scene. Ringo''s bass drum has The Beatles''
logo this time, and the grass-skirted dancers again come on stage
during the song''s finale. The third film clip features shots from
the first two films, plus ad***ional shots of The Beatles
(especially John) doing the twist in front of a backdrop design of
red and yellow geometric shapes. Once the promo films have been
e***ed and completed, Neil Aspinall flies to New York to deliver
them for broadcast in the US. Version one is broadcast on "The Ed
Sullivan Show" on November 26 and on "Hollywood Palace" on November
    27. But The Beatles run into problems with their new film clips in
the UK. A Musician''s Union ban on lip-sync broadcasts has been
imposed, and none of the film clips can be used on British
television to promote "Hello Goodbye". Videos such as the one for
"Penny Lane" are acceptable, because they don''t show The Beatles
pretending to perform the song. But "Hello Goodbye" clearly
utilizes the lip-sync format. The Beatles will try remixing "Hello
Goodbye" to remove the overdubbed violas, hoping to fool the
censors, but it is not very effective. In the end, the "Hello
Goodbye" film clips will not be broadcast in the UK. Instead,
"Hello Goodbye" will be telecast in the UK with different video
accompaniment, ranging from scenes from "A Hard Day''s Night" to
scenes from "Magical Mystery Tour" to stock BBC footage taken from
    a moving train.
    [J] 1969
The Institute of Contemporary Arts again shows a number of John and
    Yoko films.
    [R] 1971
The movie "200 Motels" opens in New York City. The film features
    Ringo Starr.

The Beatles working for 13 hours straight. They need three new
songs. The previously-recorded "Wait" is pulled off the shelf for
one of the needed songs, and after a few overdubs it is ready to
go. They overdub vocals onto the previous night''s rhythm track of
"I''m Looking Through You". Then they record, from start to finish,
Paul''s "You Won''t See Me" and John''s "Girl", the basic tracks for
both songs being completed in two takes. "Rubber Soul" is
completed, and finished copies of the album are in the shops by
