** The following events in Beatles history all took place on November 16. **

    1957
The Quarry Men perform at Stanley Abbatoir Social Club, Old Swan,
Liverpool. This is a dance for the social club members of a large

    poorly received.

    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1962
The Beatles travel to EMI House in London for their second
appearance on Radio Luxembourg, for the program "The Friday
Spectacular". The Beatles are interviewed and their songs are
played in front of a live audience. Both sides of their single,
"Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You", are played. The program is
    broadcast on November 23.
    1963
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at the Winter
Gardens Theatre in Bournemouth, Hampshire. With news of
Beatlemania spreading overseas, three US camera crews for the major
US television networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) film parts of this nights
performances and also footage of the audience goings-on. The
reports showed up on American television on the nights of November
16, 19, and 21, and also on December 7. The US coverage was quite
condescending, with reporter Alexander Kendrick trying to be acidly
witty by saying of The Beatles, "They symbolise the 20th century
non-hero, as they make non-music, wear non-haircuts and give
    none-mersey" (Lewisohn).
    1964
The Beatles, at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, London, record a
television appearance for the BBC TV program "Top of the Pops".
They lip-sync to their songs "I Feel Fine" and "She''s a Woman".

My Feet" (Parlophone). "Once Upon a Long Ago" was previously
released on the UK version of McCartney''s compilation album "All
the Best". The flip side was co-written by McCartney and Declan
MacManus (Elvis Costello). Neither song released in the US. Also
released this day as a CD single with the songs "Once Upon a Long
Ago/Back On My Feet/Don''t Get Around Much Anymore/Kansas City"

    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club - a lunchtime show. That
night they perform at Village Hall, Knotty Ash, Liverpool.
    1962
The Beatles perform at Matrix Hall, Fletchamstead Highway,
Coventry, Warwickshire. This is The Beatles'' first performance in
the Midlands. This is also their first live performance since
their most recent return from Hamburg. In a 1969 conversation with
John Lennon (seen in the film "Let It Be"), Paul McCartney
remembers this performance as "the worst first-night ever" (Paul
incorrectly remembered this performance as taking place at
DeMontfort Hall in Leicester). Supporting The Beatles at the
Matrix are The Mark Allen Group and Lee Teri.
    1963
The Beatles, touring Britain, perform for two "houses" at Coventry

double-CD "Live at the BBC" (Disc one, Track 3). Recordings from
this day''s session are included on the 1994 Beatles double-CD "Live

    #2.
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Room 53, EMI Studios, London).
Ad***ional mixing for "I Am the Walrus" results in significant
variations between the stereo and mono masters. One such variation
is in the intro to the song--the mellotron "siren" plays for four
bars on the mono master; the stereo master has six bars. [Note:
according to some sources, it is a Wurlitzer electric piano, not a
mellotron, on which the "siren" is played.]

    "Live From Montreux".
    2000

"Magical Mystery Tour", containing only the six songs that appear
on side one of the LP, was the only UK format available prior to
this. Because of this, many British fans had bought imported US

Weight/The End". The UK version has the song "All My Trials" in
place of "Put it There". The album was not generally released on
vinyl, but Columbia House Record Club did release a shortened
12-inch vinyl version (five fewer tracks) that contained "All My

Beatles permitted Pathe News to film two songs from their first

George Harrison is deported from Germany for being underage and
ineligible to work in a night club after midnight. Kaiserkeller
owner Bruno Koschmider may have alerted the police to George''s
status as a means of retaliating against The Beatles for defecting
to the new Top Ten Club. George had to return home alone, spending
all he had to make it back to Liverpool.
    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
Hamburg, West Germany. The Beatles have to play without George
Harrison, who had been deported that day for being underage (17).
Most likely it was Kaiserkeller owner Bruno Koschmider, wanting to
get back at The Beatles for breaking their contract, who alerted
the authorities that George was under age 18 and, therefore, not
legally allowed to remain in a night club after midnight.
    1961

Yoko has a miscarriage. John stays with her at Queen Charlotte''s

    1957
The Quarry Men perform at New Clubmoor Hall, Norris Green,
Liverpool. A return engagement at the Conservative Club.
    1960
The Beatles perform at the Kaiserkeller Club, Grosse Freiheit,
    Hamburg, West Germany.
    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club - a lunchtime show.
    1962
The Beatles travel to St. James'' Church Hall, London, for a
ten-minute au***ion with BBC Television. The au***ion came about
when a Beatles fan, David Smith of Preston, wrote to the BBC and
asked that The Beatles be featured on BBC television. Assuming
that Smith was The Beatles'' manager, BBC wrote back to him,
offering The Beatles an au***ion on November 6. Smith brought this
letter to NEMS Enterprises, and Clive Epstein (Brian''s brother)
arranged for the Nov. 23 au***ion. Four days later, Brian Epstein
received a polite "thumbs-down" letter from the BBC, and he
realized that The Beatles would need to score a #1 hit before they
had a real chance of making their BBC television debut. After the
au***ion, The Beatles had to hurry home for their scheduled
    performance that night.
    1962
The Beatles, back from their mid-day au***ion in London with BBC
Television, perform at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton, Wallasey,
for the 12th annual Lancashire and Cheshire Arts Ball, an event to
aid a children''s charity. Also appearing are Billy Kramer & the
Coasters (later known as Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas), the
Llew Hird Jazz Band, and the Clan McCleod Pipe Band.
    1963
The Beatles, on a tour of Britain, perform two shows at City Hall,
    Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
    1964
US release of double LP "The Beatles Story" (Capitol). Documentary
album with mostly narrative, a few interviews, and a very brief
clip of "Twist and Shout" from the August 23 concert at the
Hollywood Bowl. 17 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #7.
    1964
US release of Beatles single "I Feel Fine/She''s a Woman" (Capitol).
11 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1.
    1964
The Beatles tape an appearance for the television program "Ready,
Steady, Go!" They lip-sync to their songs "I Feel Fine", "She''s a
Woman", "Baby''s in Black", and "Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey". They
also give an interview with host Keith Fordyce. Recorded at
Wembley Studios, Wembley. Broadcast on November 27.
    1965
The Beatles, at Twickenham Film Studios, shoot 10 black and white
promo films for 5 songs (9 of which will eventually be broadcast on
television), miming to "We Can Work It Out", "Day Tripper",
"Help!", "Ticket to Ride", and "I Feel Fine". Three versions of
"We Can Work It Out" are filmed, all featuring John sitting at an
organ, one opening with a photo of John with a sunflower over one
eye, and one with The Beatles wearing their "Shea Stadium" suits.
Three versions of "Day Tripper" are shot, while one version each of
"Help!" and "Ticket to Ride" are filmed. Two versions of "I Feel
Fine" are done. Many of the promo clips will be broadcast on "Top
of the Pops" and "Thank Your Lucky Stars" in the UK, and one film
each of "We Can Work It Out" and "Day Tripper" will be shown on the
US television program "Hullabaloo" (January 3, 1966).
    1967
The British television show "Top of the Pops" broadcasts The
Beatles'' "Hello Goodbye". However, since the UK Musician''s Union
had instituted a ban on lip-sync performances, the "Hello Goodbye"
film promos that The Beatles had recorded at the Saville Theatre on
November 10 could not be used. So "Top of the Pops" broadcasts a
film clip from "A Hard Day''s Night" as the song "Hello Goodbye" is
played. To put it mildly, The Beatles are annoyed.
    [G] 1967
George Harrison in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Producing another "Wonderwall" recording session. He
works with two oboists, one trumpeter, and two flautists.
    [B] 1968
"Hey Jude" is the #1 single in the US for the ninth week in a row.
This is its last week at #1.
    [G] 1970
US release of George Harrison single "My Sweet Lord/Isn''t It a
Pity" (Apple). 14 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #1.
    [O] 1970
US release of Stephen Stills LP "Stephen Stills", which contains
the songs "To a Flame" and "We Are Not Helpless". Ringo Starr
(using the name "Richie") plays drums on those two songs. Released
in the UK on November 27, 1970.
    [R] 1973
UK release of Ringo Starr LP "Ringo" (Apple). Songs: "I''m the
Greatest", "Hold On (Have You Seen My Baby)", "Photograph",
"Sunshine Life For Me (Sail Away Raymond)", "You''re Sixteen", "Oh
My My", "Step Lightly", "Six O''Clock", "Devil Woman" and "You and
    Me (Babe)".
    [B] 1987
UK re-release of Beatles single "Hello Goodbye/I Am the Walrus"
(Parlophone). 20th anniversary reissue. Released as a regular
single and also as a picture disc.
    [B] 2000
The Beatles'' compilation album "1" hits number one on the music
charts of 19 countries in its first week of release. Included
among those countries are the UK, US, Japan, France, Germany,
Canada, Australia, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Venezuela. This
beats The Beatles'' previous record of topping the charts in 10
countries within the first week of release of their November 1995
album "The Beatles Anthology 1". During the past week 750,000
copies of "1" were sold in Japan; 595,000 copies were sold in the
US (second to the 855,500 copies of "Anthology 1" sold during its
first week); and 313,000 copies were sold in the UK, making "1" the
fastest-selling album of the year. This degree of success was
somewhat unexpected since the album consists of a collection of The
Beatles'' number one singles, all originally released between 1962
and 1970. US sales were more than double initial projections; "1"
becomes The Beatles'' 19th album to top US charts. US sales were
undoubtedly boosted by the November 17 broadcast of a television
special covering The Beatles'' career, "The Beatles Revolution",
which was shown on ABC-TV and which attracted an estimated 8.7
million viewers. The album "1" was advertised heavily during the
broadcast. The TV special, a joint production of ABC-TV and the
cable channel VH1, will be re-broadcast this evening on VH1.
Ad***ional interest was generated by the opening of The Beatles''
first official website, "www.thebeatles.com", on November 13 and
the release of the book "The Beatles Anthology" on October 5. The
surviving Beatles'' reaction to the success of "1"? According to a
    spokesman, they are "dead chuffed".
    [B] 2000
    US cable channel VH1 re-broadcasts a 2-hour television special,
"The Beatles Revolution", about the career of The Beatles and their
impact upon world music and culture. Among those who were
interviewed for the special and whose comments are included are
Eric Idle, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Lenny Kravitz, Sting,
and Mike Meyers. The show, a joint production between VH1 and
ABC-TV, was originally broadcast by ABC on November 17. VH1 is
scheduled to broadcast "The Beatles Revolution" again on November
    25. Following tonight''s showing is a one-hour installment in VH1''s
"Legend" series about John Lennon, and that is followed by a
one-hour installment in VH1''s "Behind the Music" series about
    Julian Lennon.

The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The Beatles get together for the first time since their
return from the summer tour of the United States, ready to record a
new album. The first song selected for recording is John''s
"Strawberry Fields Forever", which will end up, not on the album,
but on The Beatles'' next single. This day''s session is devoted
entirely to "Strawberry Fields Forever", a song which evokes
memories from John''s childhood, mixed with the mind-expanding
elements of LSD. One of the most complex of all Beatles'' songs, it
will undergo numerous changes in the studio from this first day''s
recording, which ends with a completed track that is only 2 mins 34
secs long. Take 1 of "Strawberry Fields Forever" was released on
"The Beatles Anthology 2" (Disc two, Track 2).
