    1960
The Beatles perform at the Grosvenor Ballroom, Liscard, Wallasey.
Also on the bill is Derry & the Seniors. Each group receives the
    fee of 10.5 pounds.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany.
    1963
The opening night of "The Beatles' Christmas Show", a Brian Epstein
idea that combined music, comedy, and pantomime. The Beatles, and
other groups, play music and also dress in costumes for comedy
sketches and routines with stage sets, all of which prove to be
tremendously popular with the audiences. From Dec. 24, 1963
through January 11, 1964, The Beatles put on 30 shows (two a night
except for Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 which have only one each, and Dec.
25, Dec. 29, and Jan. 5 which have none). A total of 100,000
tickets were sold for the 30 shows, going on sale October 21 and
selling out by November 16. "The Beatles Christmas Show" is put on
at the Astoria Cinema in Finsbury Park, London. The Beatles'
musical repertoire for each show is "Roll Over Beethoven", "All My
Loving", "This Boy", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "She Loves You", "Till
There Was You", "I Want to Hold Your Hand", "Money", and "Twist and
Shout". Appearing with The Beatles are The Barron Knights & Duke
D'Mond, Tommy Quickly, The Fourmost, Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas,
    Cilla Black, and Rolf Harris.
    1963
Subafilms Ltd., a Beatles film company, is formed.
    1964
The Beatles perform in the first night of their "Another Beatles
Christmas Show", at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The format is
much like that of the preceding year's revue: music, pantomime, and
comedy. The Beatles appear in two comedy sketches, one with
Freddie Garrity (of Freddie & the Dreamers) and one with Jimmy
Savile (a disc-jockey). The Beatles perform 11 songs as part of
the show: "Twist and Shout", "I'm a Loser", "Baby's in Black",
"Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Honey
    Don't", "I Feel Fine", "She's a Woman", "A Hard Day's Night", "Rock
and Roll Music", and "Long Tall Sally". The show runs for 20
nights, December 24, 1964 through January 16, 1965. There are no
    performances on Dec. 25 & 27 or Jan. 3 & 10. There are two
performances each night, except for Dec. 24 & 29, when there is one
each night, making a total of 38 performances of "Another Beatles
Christmas Show". Support acts are Freddie & the Dreamers, Elkie
Brooks, The Yardbirds, Sounds Incorporated, and others. One night
during the first week of the show's run, The Beatles recorded an
interview for Radio Luxembourg's Chris Denning, for a series to be
called "The Beatles". During the interview, John Lennon dedicates
songs to Pete Shotton and Nigel Whalley, and Paul makes a
dedication to Ivan Vaughan (Shotton, Whalley, and Vaughan had all
been Quarry Men). George makes a dedication to school chum Arthur
Kelly, and Ringo does the same for Al Caldwell (more widely known
    as Rory Storm).
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko join a sit-in and fast outside of Rochester Cathedral
in Kent, for the purpose of calling for peace and highlighting
    world poverty.
    2000
The Beatles' compilation album "1" is #1 in the UK for the 6th week
    in a row.
    2000
The Beatles' compilation album "1" is #1 in Austria, Canada,
    Finland, Italy, and Switzerland.

    1967
BBC Television broadcasts The Beatles' movie "Magical Mystery Tour"
in black and white. The next day, the British press and the
viewing public pronounce the film an utter disaster. The negative
reaction is so strong that a US television deal for broadcasting
the movie is cancelled. Despite some fine comedic moments,
"Magical Mystery Tour" is judged to be little more than a
    self-indulgent home movie.
    [G] 1970

    1960
The Beatles perform at Litherland Town Hall Ballroom, Liverpool.
According to Mark Lewisohn, "If any one live performance in the
Beatles' career could be described as the turning point it would be
this, their penultimate engagement in 1960....the group never looked
back after this night." Added to the bill at the last minute, The
Beatles were not advertised to appear, so banners had been pasted
onto advertising posters, the banners saying "Direct From Hamburg,
The Beatles!" Since The Beatles are playing in an area they'd only
played in once before, most of the audience assumes they are a
German group. As the show begins with The Beatles launching into
"Long Tall Sally", everyone in the crowd suddenly, spontaneously
crushes forward to the front of the stage, "swept away by the
group's sheer magnetism" (Mark Lewisohn). The crowd becomes
surprisingly frenzied, marking the birth of the phenomenon that
    will become known as "Beatlemania".
    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club - a night show advertised as
    "The Beatles' Xmas Party".
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany.
    1962
The Beatles' first Parlophone single, "Love Me Do", reaches #17 on
"Record Retailer's" Top 50 chart. It has been alleged that Brian
Epstein purchased 10,000 copies of the disc after having discovered
the sales needed to guarantee a Top 20 hit, but Epstein always
hotly denied this. Indeed, the fact that The Beatles came in fifth
in a New Musical Express poll for Best British Vocal Group suggests
that their chart placing was fully merited by their popularity.
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Astoria Cinema, Finsbury Park, London.
Appearing in two performances of "The Beatles' Christmas Show".
    1963
Music critics of the "London Times" name John Lennon and Paul
McCartney the 'Outstanding Composers of 1963'.
    [P] 1967
Paul McCartney appears on "The Frost Programme", a UK television
show, in an interview taped earlier in the day. The first half of
his appearance deals with the strong negative reaction to "Magical
Mystery Tour"; Paul tries to explain The Beatles' viewpoint. Later
in the show, he discusses broader topics, such as war, the human
    con***ion, personal responsibility, and money.
    [J] 1980
John and Yoko's LP "Double Fantasy" reaches #1 in the US charts.
    [J] 1980
John Lennon's single "(Just Like) Starting Over" reaches #1 in the
    US charts.

The ITV television program, "Man of the Decade", is broadcast.
John Lennon is one of the three persons selected, along with John
    F. Kennedy and Ho Chi Minh (Ray Coleman and Allen Wiener report it
    was Mao Tse-tung).
    [P] 1996
It is announced that Paul McCartney will become the first Beatle to
be honored with knighthood, and that he will henceforth be known as
Sir Paul McCartney. Paul accepts the honor "on behalf of all the
people of Liverpool and the other Beatles, without whom it wouldn't

    [G] 1999
George Harrison is seriously wounded by an intruder who had broken
into Harrison's home at Henley-on-Thames in the pre-dawn hours to
kill him. During a struggle with the intruder, Harrison receives
several stab wounds to the chest, one of which narrowly misses his
heart and a major artery, but the knife does pierce and deflate
George's right lung. Harrison's wife Olivia saves his life by
striking the intruder with a poker and a table lamp, and she
receives a number of cuts, scratches, and bruises during the
lengthy life-or-death struggle. Harrison had thought he'd been
fatally stabbed, but police arrive in time to prevent the intruder
from inflicting a mortal wound upon Harrison. In November 2000 the
intruder will be acquitted by reason of insanity and he will be
committed indefinitely to a mental hospital. Harrison's request
that he be notified should the intruder ever be released will be
    denied.

Liverpool. This appearance marks the 4th and last time that
temporary bassist Chas Newby plays with The Beatles.
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Star-Club, Hamburg, West Germany. This
is the final night of their fifth, and final, visit to Hamburg.
The Beatles' performance is recorded by Ted 'Kingsize' Taylor (of
The Dominoes). The recording has since become known as "The
Star-Club Tapes", and the tracks, first released in 1977, have been
extensively re-issued. The ex-Beatles opposed the release of the
recordings, due primarily to their very poor sound quality. The
recordings do, nonetheless, provide a fascinating glimpse, however
slight, of the early Beatles. The original tapes were auctioned in
August 1992. Their apprenticeship in Hamburg completed, The
Beatles were ready to move into national, and then international,
    fame.

Paul McCartney institutes court proceedings in the London High
Court to end The Beatles partnership. His suit requests that a
receiver for Apple be appointed until the case is settled, charging
Allen Klein with mismanagement of Apple funds. The other three
    Beatles oppose Paul's action.
    [J] 1979
John and Yoko dissolve most of their companies, including Bag

    NOTICE:
    Dear all Beatle fans,
I have to send my archives from now as the friend who has been doing a great job of giving us the details of the Fab Four's activities has decided to shift his work to other things. My archive was dated back to Jan 1, 2001.
    And here we go:
** The following events in Beatles history all took place on January 1. **

    1959
The Quarry Men (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and
Colin Hanton) perform at Wilson Hall, Garston, Liverpool. The
occasion is the (late) Christmas party of the Speke Bus Depot
Social Club. Harry Harrison (George's father) is chairman of the
club and had arranged the booking for The Quarry Men. The
performance turns into a drunken, messy affair, and afterwards
drummer Colin Hanton gets into a furious argument with the others.
On the way home by bus, Hanton gets off with his drums before his
usual stop. "He neither saw nor heard from The Quarry Men again"
    (Mark Lewisohn). (1434)
    1962
On New Year's Day (not a holiday in England at that time), The
Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete
Best) conduct their first au***ion for a major record company,
Decca. In Decca's studios in London, and less than 2 miles from
EMI's Abbey Road studios, The Beatles tape 15 songs that had been
carefully selected by Brian Epstein to show off their versatility:
"Like Dreamers Do", "Money", "Till There Was You", "The Sheik of
Araby", "To Know Her Is to Love Her", "Take Good Care of My Baby",
"Memphis", "Sure to Fall (In Love With You)", "Hello Little Girl",
"Three Cool Cats", "Crying, Waiting, Hoping", "The Love of the
Loved", "September In the Rain", "Besame Mucho", and "Searchin'".
It took about an hour to record all the songs, and Decca's Mike
Smith (who had arrived late, irritating Brian Epstein) promised to
get back to Brian with Decca's decision; then Smith hurried The
Beatles out of the studio because he was running late for a second
au***ion - with Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. (969)

    1960
Stuart Sutcliffe joins The Quarry Men, using part of the money he
received from the sale of a painting to make a down payment on the
purchase of a bass guitar. Stuart's mother Millie made the
remaining payments. [Note: many sources state that Sutcliffe
purchased the bass guitar outright, using all of the proceeds from
the sale of one of his paintings to millionaire John Moore, but
Bill Harry cites letters that Stuart wrote to his mother from
Hamburg, asking her to keep up the payments on the guitar, as proof
that the generally-recognized version is wrong.] It is widely
believed that Sutcliffe's parents had wanted him to put all of the
John Moore money back into his artistic career and that John Lennon
persuaded him to buy the bass guitar instead. However, according
to Bill Harry, Millie Sutcliffe was, for the most part, supportive
of Stuart's musical endeavors. Another standard but incorrect
story is that Sutcliffe never really learned to play his bass
guitar and often turned his back to the audience during
performances to hide his lack of ability. Bill Harry states that
this is absolutely not true, blaming this misconception on
erroneous statements made by Allan Williams, particularly in his
book "The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away". According to Harry,
"Stuart did not play with his back to the audience. I saw Stuart
play long before Williams because they used to play at our art
college dances. I have checked every photograph of Stuart playing
that I can find and on every one he is facing the audience...He
wasn't the best player in the world but he could play his
instrument. He taught Klaus Voorman how to play bass guitar...".
Most sources also report that Sutcliffe suggested the name
"Beatals". However, Bill Harry states that Stuart came up with the
name "Beetles" (due to its similarity to the name of Buddy Holly's
group, the Crickets). The name "Silver Beetles" was adopted first,
and when it was shortened to "Beatles", it was John Lennon who
substituted the "a". [Many thanks to Bill Harry for pointing out
the errors in the original entry and for providing the correct
information along with his comments.] (1430)

This was supposed to be the first night of a five-appearance
Beatles tour of Scotland. But the show has to be cancelled due to
terrible weather con***ions during the worst winter weather in
decades--icy cold and snowdrifts that makes the roads impassable.
This after The Beatles' flight from London had been diverted to
Aberdeen at the last minute; Neil Aspinall was waiting to pick them
up in Edinburgh. The venue at which The Beatles were to have
performed was Longmore Hall, Keith, Banffshire. (1659)

    1969
Start of the "Get Back" project. With The Beatles on the edge of
crisis through much of 1968, Paul McCartney began urging his fellow
Beatles to consider a return to playing live. He reasoned that it
was music that had brought them together, and that they should "get
back" to performing live. The others weren't too keen on the idea,
especially John and George, but they agreed to think about it. In
fact, things progressed far enough for Paul to announce to the
press that The Beatles would play 3 shows at the Roundhouse in
London in mid-December 1968. But Paul just couldn't get the others
on the same wavelength, and those plans had to be scrapped. As a
compromise, Paul suggested that The Beatles could perform a
televised concert, either live or pre-taped. John, George, and
Ringo half-heartedly agreed, but even in the midst of agreeing John
was suggesting that maybe it was time for The Beatles to call it a
day and split up. A lot of ideas were kicked around for a
televised performance, one of the most intriguing being a concert
in a Roman amphitheater, but the logistics were just too complex
for the rather unenthusiastic Beatles. (It would be left for Pink
Floyd to realize this idea). Since there seemed to be a stalemate
in choosing a suitable vehicle, Denis O'Dell suggested that The
Beatles begin rehearsing and, perhaps, film those rehearsals for a
TV documentary showing the "Beatles at Work". They all agreed to
follow this advice, and to do the rehearsals/filming at Twickenham
Film Studios. It really hadn't been very long since the completion
of "The Beatles", and there weren't many new songs available for
the group to work on. Still, uncertain as to what they were about,
The Beatles met at Twickenham on a cold and cheerless sound stage
at the beginning of a new year. No sooner had things gotten
underway than the old resentments and tensions began to
surface--Yoko was encroaching into The Beatles' domain, Paul was
bossing everyone around and telling George how to play, and on and
on just like before. The Beatles jammed aimlessly, with little or
no enthusiasm. Little of what was recorded at Twickenham would be
included in the "Let it Be" movie; it was simply too wretched.

US District Court Judge Richard Owen rules in New York that John
Lennon shall be given access to Department of Immigration files
pertaining to his deportation case. Lennon and his lawyer want to
determine whether attempts to deport him are due to his 1968
British drug conviction or to his comments and activities against
the Nixon administration and in support of left-wing/radical
    activist groups. (3263)
