    1961
The Beatles perform at Aintree Institute, Aintree, Liverpool.
    (1228)
    1962

they give a performance at the Storyville Jazz Club on Temple
    Street in Liverpool. (920)
    1963
The Beatles, on the Helen Shapiro tour, perform at the Odeon
    Cinema, Southport, Lancashire. (1716)
    1964
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). They record three songs in three hours. "I'm Happy Just
to Dance With You", a song John Lennon had written for George
Harrison to sing, is completed in four takes. "Long Tall Sally" is
recorded in a single, terrific take, and "I Call Your Name" is
completed in seven takes. [Note: "Long Tall Sally" and "I Call
Your Name" were released in the US on the LP "The Beatles' Second
Album"; in the UK they were released on the "Long Tall Sally" EP.
"I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" was included on the "A Hard
Day's Night" LP in both countries, although the US and UK albums
    were quite different.] (2048)
    1965
Beatles filming their second movie, "HELP!", in the Bahamas:
filming at "Cafe' Martinique" restaurant and Ringo on a schooner
with Victor Spinetti (Prof. Foot), Roy Kinnear (Algernon), and
    Eleanor Bron (Ahme). (2303)
    1966
A documentary film of The Beatles' Shea Stadium concert of August
15, 1965, is broadcast in the UK by the BBC. (2460)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). A new piano track is taped for the already-mastered "A
Day in the Life", but this new overdub is later discarded.
Recording then begins for "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". Seven
    takes are recorded. (2641)
    [P] 1969
Paul McCartney in the recording studio (Morgan Studios, London).
Producing recordings with Apple recording artist Mary Hopkin,
"Goodbye" and "Sparrow". "Goodbye" was written by McCartney
    (cre***ed to Lennon-McCartney) for Hopkin. (3021)
    1970
A promotional film of The Beatles singing "Two of Us" and "Let It
Be" is shown on US television, on "The Ed Sullivan Show". (3210)
    [J] 1972
John and Yoko begin recording songs for "Some Time in New York
    City". (3463)
    [J] 1974
John Lennon asks the US District Court for a temporary restraining
order against the Immigration and Naturalization Bureau to delay a
ruling on his pending deportation case (his request will be denied
    on May 1). (3307)
    [J] 1975
At the Grammy Awards ceremony, John Lennon (with Paul Simon) is a
guest presenter. Paul McCartney receives two Grammys for "Band on
    the Run". (3308)
** The following events all took place sometime in March. **
** Any help in determining the exact dates would be appreciated. **
    [J] 1957
John Lennon decides to form a skiffle group, so he and friend Pete
Shotton form 'The Blackjacks'. The name lasts only about a week,
when they decide to change their name to 'The Quarry Men'. Both
John and Pete attend Quarry Bank High School for Boys, and the
school song has the line, "Quarry Men, strong before our birth."
The first complete line-up of the Quarry Men includes John Lennon
(guitar), Pete Shotton (washboard), Colin Hanton (drums), Eric
Griffiths (guitar), Rod Davis (banjo), and Bill Smith (tea-chest
    bass). (1453)
    1964
Release in Sweden of Beatles (with Tony Sheridan) single "My
Bonnie/Cry For a Shadow" (Polydor). Originally released in Germany
under the name 'Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers'. (3767)
    [O] 1966
US release of Chet Atkins LP "Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles"
(RCA). Atkins plays Beatles songs on the record. George Harrison
    wrote the liner notes. (3759)
    [O] 1968
Ken Partride, a design consultant, is hired by Apple to stem the
financial losses at the Apple Boutique. (2823)
    1969
Dick James sells his 23 percent share of Northern Songs to
Associated Television (ATV), owned by Sir Lew Grade. Northern
Songs holds publishing rights to nearly every Lennon-McCartney
composition. James makes the sale without notifying The Beatles or
giving them first refusal on buying his shares. At this point,
neither ATV nor The Beatles own enough shares to grab majority
control of the company. A fierce competition to buy up available
shares begins, and Paul McCartney secretly buys so many shares that
he soon has 100,000 shares more than John Lennon. John will view
this as underhanded, and it only adds to the strain on the
Lennon-McCartney partnership, which is now just about undone.
Still, the competition against ATV continues, causing John to later
remark that the experience was like "playing Monopoly with real
money". But the rift between John and Paul prevents them from
acting with any real cohesiveness against ATV, and the antagonism
and disarray within The Beatles' camp will lead to their loss of
control over Northern Songs. Disgusted, they will liquidate their
shares, retaining no control whatsoever over the bulk of their song
    catalog. (3028)
    [J] 1970
John and Yoko undergo three weeks of intensive 'primal scream'
therapy in London with Arthur Janov, creator of the method. (3208)
    1970
Paul McCartney announces that he intends to release his first solo
album in April, which conflicts with the scheduled release of
Ringo's "Sentimental Journey" and The Beatles' "Let It Be". When
Ringo visits Paul to discuss the problem, McCartney throws him out.
Nonetheless, Ringo is sympathetic with Paul, and he manages to
convince George and John to delay the release of "Let It Be" so
that "McCartney" can be released in April. (3209)
    1973
US sales of two unauthorized 4-LP boxed sets are made via
television: "Alpha Omega Volume I" and "Alpha Omega Volume II".
The record sets, marketed by Audio Tape, Inc., were removed from
the market, but this spurred the quick release of Beatles
compilation double LP's "The Beatles 1962-1966" and "The Beatles
1967-1970", which were released less than a month later. (155)
    [J] 1974
During March and April, John Lennon produces Harry Nilsson's "*****
    Cats" album. (3498)
    [J] 1983
Under the Freedom of Information Act, Jon Wiener or the University
of California, Irvine, obtains heavily censored documents relating
to FBI actions against John Lennon in 1972. Wiener will sue the
FBI to obtain the deleted information, using what he has already
received to write his 1984 book "Come Together". In 1991, a court
will rule that the FBI must turn over the deleted files to Wiener.
    (3605)
    1985
EMI announces that a new Beatles album containing previously
unreleased tracks will be released. Unimaginatively titled
"Sessions", the album is killed soon after, but bootleg copies
    surface before long. (3617)
    [O] 1993
George Martin, commenting on The Beatles' unreleased tape archive
at Abbey Road Studios, states, "I've listened to all of the tapes.
There are one or two interesting variations, but otherwise it's all
junk. Couldn't possibly release it." Yet eight months later he
will announce that he plans to use virtually all of it in the
documentary series "The Beatles Anthology". (3661)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Beatles * [J] John * [P] Paul * [G] George * [R] Ringo * [O] Other
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1961
The Beatles perform at Litherland Town Hall. (1227)
    1962
The Beatles perform at two different venues. First they play a
show at St. John's Hall in Bootle, then they cross the Mersey River
for a performance at the Tower Ballroom, New Brighton, Wallasey.
The support group for the Bootle appearance is The Searchers (The
Beatles are paid 17 pounds, the Searchers are paid 6 pounds, and
paid attendance was 357). The Tower event was billed as a "Mad
    March Rock Ball". (919)
    1963
The Beatles, on the Helen Shapiro tour, perform at City Hall,
Sheffield, Yorkshire, playing for two "houses". After the second
show, they drive 38 miles to Manchester, to appear on a live
interview program (see separate entry). (1717)
    1963
After performing in Sheffield, The Beatles drive to Manchester's
Didsbury Studio Centre to appear live on the ABC Television
news-magazine program "ABC At Large", which is broadcast to the
Midlands and the north regions. Along with Brian Epstein, The
Beatles give a lengthy interview with host David Hamilton.
Although The Beatles do not perform on the show, a brief clip of
them doing a lip-sync performance of "Please Please Me", from their
February 23 appearance on "Thank Your Lucky Stars", is replayed.
    (1718)
    1964
US release of Beatles single "Twist and Shout/There's A Place"
(Tollie). 11 weeks on Billboard chart; highest position #2. (13)
    1964
Filming begins for The Beatles' first movie, "A Hard Day's Night",
although the film has no title at this point. The Beatles have to
join the actor's union minutes before getting on the train at
Paddington Station so that filming can begin. The first week's
filming is scheduled to take place on a train. On this first day,
the train travels west to Minehead and then returns to London.
Because of the Beatlemania surrounding their first day's departure,
The Beatles decide to board the train on the following days at the
more discreet Acton Main Line and having their chauffeurs meet them
at out-of-the-way drop-off points in the evenings. Schoolgirl
actress Pattie Boyd, whose train sequence with The Beatles is
filmed this day, meets George Harrison. They would marry on
    January 21, 1966. (2049)
    1965
The Beatles in the Bahamas, filming their second movie, originally
titled "Eight Arms to Hold You", but eventually renamed "HELP!"
    (2304)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Overdubs are recorded for "Lucy in the Sky with
Diamonds", including vari-speed vocals and instrument recordings.
By the end of the session, the song is essentially completed,
although ad***ional mixing will be done. "The Beatles Anthology 2"
includes a remix of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (Disc two,
    Track 10). (2642)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko perform at Lady Mitchell Hall in Cambridge, England,
before a crowd of 500. Johns plays feedback guitar as
accompaniment to Yoko's non-stop screaming. They are joined for
part of the performance by saxophonist John Tchikai and
percussionist John Stevens, who improvise some free-form jazz. The
performance is recorded and will appear on the Zapple album
"Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With the Lions", as the track
"Cambridge 1969". The general public isn't ready for John and
Yoko's unconventional music. The rock magazine 'Rolling Stone'
likens Yoko's screeching to "...a severely retarded child being
tortured." Another critic acidly says, "Only pain aficionados need
bother." However, critics in the 1990's are inclined to judge the
work more kindly, particularly since they are not weighed down by
the Beatles myth in considering it. It is, however, not for all
tastes. This is the first concert performance of a Beatle outside
    of the group. (3022)
    [P] 1975
While in Los Angeles, Paul and Linda McCartney are stopped by
police when the car in which they are traveling runs a red light.
Marijuana is found in Linda's purse, and she is charged with
    possession. (3309)

    1962
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club - a night show. (918)
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Gaumont Cinema, Hanley, Staffordshire,
on the final night of the Helen Shapiro tour. Having started the
tour as the opening act at the bottom of the bill, The Beatles have
worked their way up to closing the first-half of each show. (1719)
    1964
Filming for The Beatles' first movie, "A Hard Day's Night", aboard
a train headed to Minehead and back. (2050)
    1965
The Beatles continue the filming of "HELP!" in the Bahamas; this
day the film's final sequence is shot (Ringo staked out on the
beach, painted red; the ring flies off of his hand). (2305)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Working on the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club
Band". Four french horn players (James Buck, Neil Sanders, Tony
Randall, and John Burden) are brought into the studio to record
overdubs. John Lennon, as he had done with musicians brought in to
play on "Penny Lane", secretly records the musicians' conversation
for his personal tape archive (which he was compiling for use in
his experimental works). Later in the session, George Harrison
overdubs a distorted lead guitar solo. (2643)
    [J] 1971
The South African Broadcasting Corporation lifts its ban on Beatles
music. The ban had been in effect since August 8, 1966, in
response to the John Lennon "Beatles bigger than Jesus"
controversy. However, the lifting of the ban does not extend to
John Lennon's compositions, vocals, or solo work, which remain
    banned. (3236)
    [J] 1972
Although Yoko had been granted custody of her daughter Kyoko, the
girl's father, Anthony Cox, flees with her, making John Lennon all
the more determined to stay in the USA. (3310)
    [G] 1973
George Harrison's album "The Concert for Bangla Desh" is awarded
the Grammy for 1972 Album of the Year. (3311)
    [G] 1991
George Harrison takes the stage at a convention of George Formby
fans at Blackpool's Winter Gardens. Playing a ukulele, he sings
Formby's "In My Little Snapshot Album". (3651)

    1962
The Beatles perform at the Casbah Coffee Club. (917)
    1963
The Beatles perform at the Plaza Ballroom, St. Helens. This is the
first booking for which The Beatles are paid 100 pounds. (1720)
    1964
More train filming for "A Hard Day's Night" (as yet untitled).
Another day's travel to Minehead and back. They stop at the
station in Crowcombe, Somerset, to shoot a favorite scene in the
film: The Beatles running, outside of the train (they were running
on the station platform beside the slowly-moving train), shouting
mischievously at the stuffy 'regular passenger' (actor Richard
Vernon), "Hey mister! Can we have our ball back?" (2051)
    1965
The Beatles continue filming for their second movie, "HELP!", in
    the Bahamas. (2306)
    1966
UK release of Beatles EP "Yesterday" (Parlophone). Songs:
"Yesterday", "Act Naturally", "You Like Me Too Much", and "It's
Only Love". Highest chart position: #1. (532)
    [J] 1966
London's "Evening Standard" publishes Maureen Cleve's interview
with John Lennon that contains his soon-to-be-distorted "Beatles
more popular than Jesus" remarks. Although Lennon was making a
comment about the irrelevance of organized religion to many
contemporary young people, most conservatives interpret his
statement as an arrogant insult (they'd never like those
'long-haired, commie' Beatles anyway). No one in the UK is
particularly scandalized, but when the remarks (quoted out of
context) reach the United States of America, American conservatives
(particularly those in southern states) go off the deep end and
start Beatles bonfires for the burning of Beatles records,
magazines, cards, books, posters, and paraphernalia. Outraged
elders take particular delight in showing their youngsters
"willingly" throwing their Beatles records into the fires. The
hostile atmosphere surrounding the Beatles' final concert tour of
the US has much to do with their decision to quit touring
    altogether. (2461)
    [O] 1969
Glyn Johns begins the process of trying to turn the "Get Back"
tapes into an album. John Lennon and Paul McCartney, sick of the
whole affair, give Johns free reign. He will complete the job on
May 28, but The Beatles will be unable to agree on whether or not
to approve the master tape for record release. Johns will be asked
to "get back" into the studio and do some more work on the album.
All will be for naught, though, because Phil Spector will be called
in to produce the eventual album, "Let It Be", from the tapes.
    (3023)
    [R] 1991
UK re-release of Ringo Starr album "Ringo" on CD, with bonus tracks
"Down and Out", "It Don't Come Easy", and "Early 1970" (EMI). Also
    reissued on cassette. (849)
    1994
US re-release of Beatles US single "I Want to Hold Your Hand/I Saw
Her Standing There" (Capitol). 30th anniversary reissue. (494)
    1996
Release of Beatles single "Real Love/Baby's in Black/Yellow
Submarine/Here There and Everywhere" in the US (Capitol) and the UK
(Parlophone/Apple). Highest UK chart position is #4. Highest US
chart position is #11 (Billboard). [Note: one source gives March
12, 1996, as the correct release date for the US.] (3401)

The Beatles perform a lunchtime show at the ****rn Club. That
night, they perform at the Kingsway Club in Southport. (916)
    1963
The Beatles in the recording studio: Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London. Only five days after John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote
the song "From Me to You", The Beatles are recording it for their
third single. Originally slotted for the B-side of the record, it
is switched to the A-side during the recording session, with "Thank
You Girl" demoted to the flip side. They record 13 takes of "From
Me to You" and 13 takes of "Thank You Girl" (at that time titled
"Thank You Little Girl"). The Beatles also want to record "The One
After 909" and "What Goes On", but only have time to record a few
takes of "909". Five takes are recorded, but none turns out quite
right, so the song is shelved and the tracks remained unissued
until "Anthology I" (the song was re-recorded in 1969 during the
rooftop concert on January 30, that version appearing on the "Let
It Be" album and in the movie). The "From Me to You/Thank You
Girl" single was issued by EMI, on the Parlophone label, on April
11, 1963. "The Beatles Anthology 1" includes a sequence of
incomplete takes of "One After 909" and a complete version of the
song pieced together from the partial takes (Disc 1, Tracks 25-26).

A promotional film for "Let It Be" is broadcast on UK television,
on the program "Top of the Pops". (3008)
    [R] 1970
Ringo Starr is in the recording studio (Morgan Studios, London).
Recording songs for his "Sentimental Journey" LP, "Whispering
Grass" and "Bye-Bye Blackbird". For "Blackbird" he uses an
arrangement written by Bee Gee Maurice Gibb. (3211)
    1970

Paul McCartney is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
Cleveland, Ohio. Previously inducted as a member of The Beatles,
McCartney is being honored for his solo work. McCartney's daughter
Stella, invited to join her father on stage, wears a shirt
proclaiming, "About ****ing time," a petulant complaint about a
perceived delay in her father's entrance into the Hall of Fame.
Paul himself presumably holds the same sentiments, which is curious
in light of a statement he made to "Newsweek" magazine in 1995 when
asked how he felt about John Lennon being in the Hall of Fame and
he himself not yet being inducted: "We are in it as The Beatles, of
course, and that's kind of enough, isn't it?...I'm not that fussed,
you know? I'm in my hall of fame....in his early days, John was very
much wondering how he would be remembered. And I said, 'You're
crazy, man. What are you talking about? Number one, you'll be
remembered as something fantastic. Number two, you won't give a
****. You'll be in the cosmos somewhere. And I have a feeling
that other things will be of more consequence at that
point.'"-(Stephen Spignesi, "The Beatles Book of Lists"). Also
inducted into the Hall of Fame this night are George Martin (The
