** The following events in Beatles history all took place on March 17. **

    1961
The Beatles perform at Mossway Hall, Croxteth, Liverpool and at the
    Liverpool Jazz Society. (1213)
    1962
The Beatles perform at the Village Hall in Knotty Ash, Liverpool.
The evening was billed as a "St. Patrick's Night Rock Gala". The
promoter, Sam Leach, booked The Beatles and Rory Storm and the
Hurricanes to draw a big crowd so that he could make enough profits
to pay for his engagement party, scheduled to follow the night's
show. The Beatles attended Leach's party, which didn't end until
    the following afternoon. (904)
    1963
The Beatles, touring with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform at
the Embassy Cinema in Peterborough. (1735)
    1964
Filming for "A Hard Day's Night" at Les Ambassadeurs (a private
club) for the nightclub scene where they find Paul's 'grandfather'
(Wilfrid Brambell) gambling at "Le Circle Club". During the day
John Lennon gave an interview about his first book, "In His Own
Write", which is due to be published on the 23rd. (2061)
    1965
The Beatles continue filming for "HELP!", in Austria. In the
curling rink with a bomb hidden in one of the curling stones.
Scenes of The Beatles in the bushes. This day a press release
announces that the upcoming movie will be titled "Eight Arms to
    Hold You". (2317)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). The "Sgt. Pepper" recording sessions continue. This day
the orchestral score for "She's Leaving Home" is recorded. George
Martin had been busy with other matters, so Paul had asked
freelance producer/arranger Mike Leander to compose the
arrangement. Martin was a bit miffed, but he showed good grace
nonetheless. One of the ten musicians was harpist Sheila Bromberg,
the first woman to play on a Beatles recording. (2651)
    1970
Release in Sweden of Beatles LP "Hey Jude" (Apple). (3819)
    [R] 1972

contains cover versions of John Lennon's songs "Move Over Ms. L"
and "In My Life". Ringo Starr appears on two songs and came up
    with the album's title. (3321)

    1961
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club, Liverpool - their first
night show here. The Swinging Bluegenes top the bill. The Beatles
like the ****rn Club, not least for the lack of violence that
erupts frequently at other venues. For a fee of 5 pounds per
lunchtime session and 15 pounds per night session, The Beatles
sharpen the enormous talent that will take them to worldwide fame.
The small ****rn Club, which has no tables, is often packed with
hundreds of Beatles fans who are packed in like sardines--a fire
inspector's nightmare. The Beatles perform on a wooden stage that
is only two feet off the ground, and they play only an arm's length
from the packed fans (a closeness they will yearn for when they
achieve world fame and have to play in stadiums, far-removed from
their hysterical fans). John Lennon's manner is copied by the male
fans, while the girls are attracted to Paul, some to George, but
most of them to the enigmatic Pete Best. (1210)
    1962
The Beatles perform at the ****rn Club -- a lunchtime show. (900)
    1963
The Beatles travel to BBC Piccadilly Studios, London, to record a
BBC radio program, "On the Scene". They perform three songs,
"Misery", "Do You Want to Know a Secret", and "Please Please Me".
The show is broadcast on March 28. After recording the radio
program, The Beatles drive south to Croydon to rejoin the
    Montez/Roe tour for that evening's performance. (1740)
    1963

    1964
"She Loves You" becomes the #1 single in the US (Billboard).
Beatles singles have held the #1 spot for 8 straight weeks. (40)
    1965
The film crew leaves Obertauern, Austria, after the completion of
locale shooting for the movie "HELP!", but The Beatles remain
behind for a day of rest. (2322)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Attempts are made to record the vocals for "Getting
Better". John Lennon had taken LSD and was feeling ill, so George
Martin (unaware that John was tripping) took him to the rooftop for
some fresh air. When Paul and George realized where John was, they
hurriedly got him off of the roof and back into the safety of the
studio. The " Getting Better" vocals had to be put off for another
day. However, the "Lovely Rita" piano solo is successfully
    recorded. (2655)
    [J] 1984
"Strawberry Fields", a tear-shaped memorial garden in New York's
Central Park dedicated to John Lennon, is officially dedicated.
    (3608)
    [P] 1989
US release of Paul McCartney CD boxed set, which included four CDs:
"McCartney", "Red Rose Speedway", "Ram", and "McCartney II"
    (Capitol). (445)

At a ceremony held at the Playhouse Theatre in London, The Beatles
are awarded three Ivor Novello awards for 1966 (Best-selling
British single "Yellow Submarine", most-performed song "Michelle",
and next-most-performed song "Yesterday"). None of the Beatles
attend, although John and Paul provided pre-taped acceptance
speeches. The winning songs are played by Joe Loss and his
Orchestra, and the lead vocal for "Michelle" is sung by Ross
MacManus, whose son will go on to become a professional musician
using the name Elvis Costello. (2654)
    1967
The Beatles in the recording studio (Studio Two, EMI Studios,
London). Completion of "Getting Better". The vocals and bongos
    are successfully overdubbed. (2657)
    [R] 1968
Ringo Starr attends a private screening of the movie "Around the
World in 80 Days", hosted by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton,
at the Coliseum Cinerama. Afterwards, Ringo attends a supper party
at the Dorchester Hotel with Taylor and Burton. (2827)
    [P] 1970
Paul McCartney in the recording studio (Studio Three, EMI Studios,
London). Making copies of the master tape of his
soon-to-be-released solo album "McCartney". Only days away from
announcing his split from The Beatles, McCartney had secretly
recorded his album using the pseudonym "Billy Martin" to book the
    studio time. (3215)
    [O] 1970
US release of the "Leon Russell" LP, on which George Harrison plays
guitar and Ringo Starr plays drums. (3216)
    1970
In Room Four of EMI Studios in London (at the same time that Paul
McCartney is making tape copies in Studio 3), Phil Spector begins
're-producing' the "Get Back" tapes into the "Let It Be" album. On
this day he works on "I've Got a Feeling", "Dig a Pony", "One After
909", "I Me Mine", and "Across the Universe". (3217)
    [P] 1973
UK release of Paul McCartney and Wings single "My Love/The Mess"
(Apple). 8 weeks on the charts; highest position #9. (596)
    [J] 1973
New York judge Ira Fieldsteel rules that John Lennon must leave the
United States within 60 days, but Yoko is granted permanent
residency. The US Immigration and Naturalization Bureau had
decided that Lennon is "undesirable". While they cite his drug
conviction as their chief objection to his remaining in the US,
their real concern is his political activism. Lennon's visitor's
visa had expired on Feb. 29, 1972. John and Yoko issue a statement
that they are "...not prepared to sleep in separate beds." (3325)
    [J] 1984
UK re-release of John Lennon/Yoko Ono album "Milk and Honey" as a
    picture disc (Polydor). (748)
    [R] 1993
US re-release of Ringo Starr album "Goodnight Vienna" on CD
(Capitol/Apple/Parlophone). Includes bonus tracks "Back off
Boogaloo", "Blindman", and "Six O'clock" (long version previously
    available on limited formats). (484)

The Beatles, on tour with Chris Montez and Tommy Roe, perform in
their hometown of Liverpool, at the Empire Theatre. This is The
Beatles' first appearance in Liverpool in more than a month. The

realized--that The Beatles' rocketing popularity would take them
    away from Liverpool. (1744)
    1964
Filming at the Scala Theatre in London for "A Hard Day's Night"
(although the film is still untitled at this point). (2074)

The Beatles filming in England (at Twickenham Studios) for the
movie "HELP!" They work on "interior temple scenes", including the
one where they "dive through a hollow sacrificial altar and into
water", that scene cutting to the swimming pool scene filmed in the
    Bahamas on February 23. (2324)

    London. (2463)

"Love Me Do", "I'm Only Sleeping", "Helter Skelter", "Don't Pass Me
By", "I Am the Walrus", "Across the Universe", "Sgt. Pepper Inner
Groove", "Misery", "There's a Place", "Sie Liebt Dich", "And I Love
Her", "Help!", "Penny Lane", "The Inner Light", and "You Know My
Name (Look Up the Number)". The inside of the gatefold cover has
an uncropped, full-size photo used for the notorious "butcher"
cover. The "rare" selections were picked because they were either
alternate versions, single B-sides, stereo/mono variations,
previously unreleased versions, or songs that had relatively
limited distribution. Highest position in Billboard charts: #21.

The Beatles perform at the Casbah Coffee Club, West Derby,
    Liverpool. (896)
    1963
On a rare day off from recording and performing, The Beatles spend
the day with photographer Dezo Hoffman, who shoots both still
photos and some 8mm movie footage of The Beatles at a variety of
    locations around Liverpool. (1745)
    1964
Filming at the Scala Theatre in London for "A Hard Day's Night" (as
    yet untitled). (2075)
    1966
The Beatles pose for photos for the cover of the American LP
"Yesterday and Today", taken by photographer Robert Whitaker. The
Beatles pose in butcher's smocks, with dismembered dolls and pieces
of butchered meat. One of these is used for the famous/infamous
"butcher" album cover that is recalled/banned by horrified Capitol
    Records executives. (2464)
    [J] 1969
John and Yoko spend their honeymoon staging a week-long bed-in for
peace in Room 902 of the Amsterdam Hilton, Amsterdam, The
Netherlands. The "event" is chronicled in the Beatles' song "The
Ballad of John and Yoko": "Drove from Paris to the Amsterdam
Hilton/ Talking in our bed for a week/ The news people said/ 'Hey,
what you doin' in bed?'/ I said, 'We're only tryin' to get us some
peace!'"--John Lennon. For a week, John and Yoko give
international interviews that are reported by newspapers, radio,
television, and newsreels worldwide. John and Yoko ignore the
hostility, incredulity, and guffaws with which much of the world
respond to their peace campaign. The media plays right into their
hands, spreading the peace message even when that isn't their
intent. John and Yoko become clearly defined as champions of peace
and humanitarianism. The week-long event is filmed, and a
60-minute film, "Honeymoon" is e***ed from the footage. During the
week, John and Yoko also record audio selections that will comprise
one side of their third "experimental" LP, "The Wedding Album".
    (3032)
    1970
Phil Spector continues transforming the "Get Back" tapes into the
"Let It Be" album. E***ing and re-mixing "For You Blue" and "Two
of Us". He also works on "Teddy Boy", which will be dropped from
the album, partly due to the fact that the song is included on Paul
    McCartney's soon-to-be-released solo album "McCartney". (3218)
    [P] 1976
US release of Wings LP "Wings at the Speed of Sound" (Capitol).
Songs: "Let 'Em In", "The Note You Never Wrote", "She's My Baby",
"Beware My Love", "Wino Junko", "Silly Love Songs", "Cook of the
House", "Time to Hide", "Must Do Something About It", "San Ferry
    Anne", and "Warm and Beautiful". 51 weeks on Billboard chart;
    highest position #1. (200)
    [O] 1995
Having resolved past antagonisms, Yoko Ono and Paul McCartney join
in recording Yoko's song "Hiroshima's Sky Is Always Blue", a
memorial to the victims of the atomic bomb for the 50th anniversary
of the Hiroshima bombing. Linda McCartney and Sean Lennon are
    there as well. (3327)

The Amsterdam Hilton, site of John and Yoko's March 1969 bed-in for
peace, opens an exhibition of John Lennon's art to celebrate the
30th anniversary of the bed-in. This is the largest exhibition of
Lennon's art ever shown, and it includes pieces from the Bag One
series which, when first exhibited in London in 1970, were
confiscated by police as being obscene. Some of Lennon's lyrics
are also on display ("Day Tripper", "Nowhere Man", "Woman", "Real
Love", and "Beautiful Boy"). Half of the works on display are for
sale, with one piece to be raffled for charity. The exhibition is
slated to run through April 5. (3862)
