Nguồn gốc và lối ăn mừng lễ Halloween tại Hoa Kỳ.
Tháng 10, mùa thu, trẻ em Mỹ đang háo hức chờ ngày lễ Halloween, được coi như lễ nhi đồng taị nước này. Dưới đây xin trình bày một chút về nguồn gốc và lối ăn mừng lễ này của trẻ em tại Hoa Kỳ.
Đến tháng 10 khi cây lá ở miền đông bắc Hoa Kỳ đã ngả vàng, người ta thấy ở khắp các thị trấn, thành phố và vùng quê đều có những hình ảnh về ngày lễ Halloween. Hình người bù nhìn bằng rơm, bằng vải nằm bên cạnh mấy chùm bắp khô, bà phù thủy mũi nhọn hoắt mặc áo đen ôm cán chổi, quả bí ngô, còn gọi là bí rợ hay bí đỏ, được tỉa theo hình mặt người cười toét miệng, nhe mấy cái răng cửa khấp khểnh, hình những con ma, con dơi, được dán lên cửa kính hay cửa sổ trước nhà. Bước vào các siêu thị, các cửa hàng bách hóa bán đồ gia dụng và các tiệm thuốc tây không ai không thấy hàng núi kẹo đủ loại, đủ kiểu, đủ màu được bày bán cùng với các loại y phục để mặc hóa trang trong ngày này, nào là mặt nạ quỉ nhe nanh, ma cà rồng miệng bê bết máu, cho đến những mặt nạ, hay những bộ y phục tương đối hiền lành hơn rập theo các nhân vật trong những phim hoạt họa ăn khách v..v..
Lễ Halloweeen tại Hoa Kỳ được trẻ con đón mừng nồng nhiệt nhất, nhưng không phải nó chỉ dành riêng cho các em. Trẻ con mừng vui được cha mẹ, anh chị dẫn đi xin kẹo vào tối ngày 31 tháng 10 là điều dĩ nhiên, nhưng những nguời lớn trong lứa tuổi từ 18 đến 24 vẫn thường hay mở tiệc hay đi dự dạ tiệc hóa trang vào đêm cuối cùng của tháng 10. Số người trong lứa tuổi từ 25 đến 44 thì dẫn con em đi xin kẹo hoặc ở nhà tỉa quả bí ngô thành hình mặt người cười, người Mỹ gọi là Jack-O?TLantern. Và hầu hết những người trên 45 tuổi thì ở nhà để phát kẹo khi trẻ con gõ cửa đến xin.
Nói chung, Halloween là lễ được nhiều người trang hoàng và ăn mừng đứng vào hàng thứ nhì trong các lễ hội mùa đông. Họ tiêu tiền khá nhiều và trung bình trong nnhững năm trở lại đây, các nhà bán lẻ đã thu về tổng cộng trên 40 triệu đô la cho toàn mùa lễ này. Riêng năm nay dự đoán sẽ có 55,8% dân Mỹ ăn mừng lễ và sẽ chi chừng 41 triệu 770 ngàn đô la cho lễ Halloween.
Nhưng tại sao ngày lễ Halloween lại rơi vào 31 tháng 10 và tại sao phải có những hình ảnh, trang phục ma quái cho ngày Halloween ?
Theo một trong những truyền thuyết bắt nguồn từ văn hóa của người Celt thời cổ Ái Nhĩ Lan thì 31 tháng 10 là lúc cbính thức chấm dứt mùa hè, chấm dứt mùa của sự sống dương gian. Chuyện kể rằng vào ngày này những hồn ma vất vưởng chết trong năm đó sẽ trở lại trần thế tìm một người nào đó mà nhập xác để còn được tồn tại sau khi chết. Thế nhưng người dương thế thì lại không muốn bị ma bắt hồn nên đến tối ngày 31 tháng 10 họ tắt đèn, tắt bếp lửa để cho nhà cửa lạnh lẽo như cõi âm. Họ còn mặc quần áo giả trang cho lẫn lộn với đám ma quỉ và khua động khắp xóm làng để đuổi tà ma.
Thế còn còn quả bí ngô, còn gọi là bí đỏ hay bí rợ tỉa theo hình mặt người cười toét miệng thì sao ?
Tại Hoa Kỳ các bà nội trợ đã mang quả bí này ra khoét ruột tỉa hình mặt người trên đó từ hàng trăm năm nay. Cũng theo truyền thuyết của người Ái Nhĩ Lan thì xưa có một anh chàng biệt danh là Jack Hà Tiện, một hôm anh chàng Jack này mời quỉ đi uống rượu. Nhưng Jack Hà Tiện vắt cổ chày ra nước lại không muốn trả tiền rượu, nên chàng ta bèn dụ dỗ con quỉ hãy hóa phép tự biến thành thành đồng tiền để Jack hà tiện mua rượu cùng nhậu cho vui. Khi quỉ nghe bùi tai biền thành đồng tiền thì Jack nhặt ngay lấy bỏ vào túi áo trong đó có sẵn một thánh giá bằng bạc khiến quỉ không thể trở lại nguyên hình quỉ được nữa. Nhưng rồi sau Jack đã giải phóng cho quỉ với điều kiện là quỉ không được quấy nhiễu Jack trong suốt 1 năm, và nếu Jack chết, quỉ cũng không được thu linh hồn của Jack. Cho đến năm sau Jack lại đánh lừa được quỉ để quỉ leo lên cây cao hái quả. Trong lúc quỉ còn đương loay hoay trên cây thì Jack khắc ngay một thánh giá vào thân cây, thế là quỉ sợ không dám leo xuống cho đến khi quỉ hứa không được quấy nhiễu Jack thêm 10 năm nữa rồi Jack mới bóc chỗ vỏ cây có khắc thánh giá đi.
Chẳng bao lâu sau đó thì anh chàng Jack Hà Tiện qua đời. Hồn ma của Jack đến gõ cửa thiên đường nhưng thượng đế không nhận cho một kẻ tinh ranh láu cá như vậy lên cõi trời. Xuống địa ngục thì gặp quỉ bị lừa khi trước còn tức tối nên Jack muốn vào địa ngục cũng không xong. Tuy nhiên giữ lời hứa không bắt hồn Jack, quỉ đuổi jack đi và chỉ cho Jack một cục than hồng để mà dò dường trong đêm tối. Jack Hà Tiện bỏ cục than cháy đỏ vào trong một củ cải tròn khoét ruột làm đèn và từ đó cứ luẩn quẩn khắp cõi dương gian. Người Ái Nhĩ Lan gọi là Jack of the Lantern, tức là Jack ***g đèn, và sau biến thành Jack-O?TLantern.
Người Ái Nhĩ Lan khoét ruột củ cải tròn hoặc củ khoai tây theo hình mặt người cười láu cá như vậy đem bày ở bệ cửa sổ hay gần cửa ra vào để xua đuổi những hồn ma vất vưởng như Jack Hà Tiện khỏi xâm nhập vào gia cư của họ. Khi những di dân từ Ái Nhĩ Lan và Anh quốc tới Hoa Kỳ, họ thấy rằng quả bí đỏ, tức bí ngô hay bí rợ, một thổ sản đầy rẫy ở vùng đất mới, là nguyên liệu thích hợp nhất để họ khoét ruột tỉa hình mặt anh chàng Jack-O?TLantern.
Quả bí đỏ, xưa nay vẫn tượng trưng cho sự phong phú của mùa màng miền bắc Mỹ, được trồng rất nhiều tại Hoa Kỳ và hằng năm vào trước lễ Halloween mấy tuần, các nông gia mở hội thi xem ai trồng được quả bí to nhất.
Năm nay giải này lọt về tay ông Steve Daletas, một phi công hàng không dân dụng vẫn dành thửa đất rộng 3 sào của ông làm nơi trồng loại bí đỏ khổng lồ để đem dự thi chỉ vì sở thích mà thôi.
Quả bí khổng lồ chiếm giải nhất phá kỷ lục từ trước đến nay nặng 1180 pounds tức là hơn 536 kilô, cao gần 1 mét và chu vi gần 4 mét rưỡi.

SOME THOUGHTS ON ENGLISH STUDY
Against the context of globalization and that every country is giving top priority to economic development, culture exchange has become a real problem. Hence, among other foreign languages English is proving to be more and more important in everyday life of everyone, especially of young people. Everyone is concerned with a common question: How to study English well and use it effectively? In this short writing I would like to share you some of my thoughts on learning English in a hope that it would be of some help to you in your language study.
Self-confidence
Many of my friends confide to me that no matter how hard they try English is still something beyond their reach. I understand that Vietnamese learners of English (and myself included) meet numerous difficulties in having a thorough grasp of a new language but the very first obstacle to their improvement in English is their own critical thinking. Some people think that they do not have the gifted aptitude for studying English. Some even believe they can never speak English fluently. It is this very wrong thought that prevents them from being self-confident and exerting due efforts. So the first thing we must do for our language study is to build up our own confidence. Only when one believes in oneself can one successfully accomplish a task.
Purpose of study
Now comes the purpose of study. Generally speaking, before doing anything we should always know for what we are doing it. It is the same as when we study a foreign language. We need to clearly identify our study purpose and base on that to find appropriate ways and means to realize it. If we do not see our purpose of study, we can not know what and how to do. This is the same when we get lost in a wet dark jungle with no way out. So the identification of study purpose is directly related to the matter of failure or success of our study. In ad***ion, once we have figured out our purpose of study, the purpose, in return, will help motivate us and mobilize our efforts. The purpose here can be varied: some people want to study English to communicate with foreigners; some study to read English books, newspapers and documents; and some want to master English to have it as an effective tool in life. Anyway, I believe there is a common purpose everyone should try to pursue. Since English, just like other languages, is a means of communication, it helps integrate us into this becoming-one world. Therefore, the first and final purpose for all of the people is to prepare themselves for communication with the rest of the world. English, ranked second only after Chinese in the number of people speaking, will help us interact with people from other countries, read books written by international authors and access the Internet, an endless source of information of all fields.

Shyness
Above Iâ?Tve talked about the importance of English and purpose of English study. Now I want *****m up some major problem that Vietnamese learners of English usually meet. First of all is shyness. As discussed above, not only when studying English but also when doing anything, self-confidence plays a vital role. Many people feel either interior or shy to speak English. They think their English is not good enough to speak and they are afraid of making mistakes. Therefore, they feel really nervous to speak English, particularly when they have to speak in front of many people or address a big audience. As a result, they keep their mouth shut all the time, even during English lessons. So shyness is what we need to defeat while building up our confidence. Let consider speaking English as a game to enjoy and take it easy to speak it. Donâ?Tt ever think that now you exert great efforts to study grammar and vocabulary then some day in future you suddenly become fluent in speaking English. You should always bear in mind that you can only speak good English by practicing it everyday regularly. Donâ?Tt be shy and donâ?Tt be afraid of mistakes. We will stand up more firmly after falls and so we will get better through our mistakes.
Shortcomings in vocabulary learning method
The next problem is that most Vietnamese learners of English do not pay due attention to the method of building up their English vocabulary. They just care about English grammar and when they turn to English vocabulary they tend to concentrate only on some specific contextual meanings of individual words without learning the wordsâ?T grammatical features or pronunciation. As a result, most of the words they learn by heart are â?odeadâ? words, which they can roughly understand when they read but they can never use them to express their ideas. Talking about pronunciation, most of the people fail to recognize the importance of the phonetic transcripts. Remember, English is considered a stressed language while many other languages are considered syllabic. In other languages, such as French or Italian, each syllable receives equal importance (there is stress, but each syllable has its own length). English pronunciation focuses on specific stressed words while quickly gliding over the other, non-stressed, words. Therefore, learning how to read the phonetic transcripts and basing on that to improve pronunciation is decisive in speaking English clearly, fluently and fluidly.
So far I have talked about some of the main problems that we usually make when we study English. Next time I am very happy to share you my experience in learning and developing English vocabulary. Thank you very much for your attention!

Without pausing for a moment. Tony Blair answer, "That would be me.."
"Yes! Very good," says the Queen.
Back at the White house, Bush asks to speak with vice president Dick Cheney. "Dick, answer this for me.. Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?"
"I''m not sure," says the vice president. "Let me get back to you on that one."
Dick Cheney goes to his advisors and asks everyone, but none can give him an answer. Finally, he ends up in the men''s room and recognizes Colin Powell''s shoes in the next stall.
Dick shouts, "Colin! Can you answer this for me? Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?"
Colin Powell yells back, "That is easy. It''s me!"
Dick Cheney smiles. "Thanks!"
Cheney goes back to the Oval Office to speak with Bush. "Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It''s Colin Powell."
Bush gets up, stomps over to Dick Cheney, and angrily yells into his face, "No, you idiot. It''s Tony Blair!"

It was the first day of school in Marietta, Georgia, and a new student named Suzuki, the son of a Japanese businessman, entered the fourth grade.
The teacher said, "Let''s begin by reviewing some American history. Who said ''Give me Liberty, or give me Death?''"
She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Suzuki, who had his hand up. "Patrick Henry, 1775," he said.
"Very good! Who said ''Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth''"? Again, no response except from Suzuki. "Abraham Lincoln, 1863.", said Suzuki.
The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should be ashamed. Suzuki, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do." he heard a loud whisper: "**** the Japs."
"Who said that?" she demanded. Suzuki put his hand up. "Lee Iacocca, 1982." At that point, a student in the back said, "I''m gonna puke."
The teacher glares and asks "All right! Now, who said that?" Again, Suzuki says, "George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991."
Now furious, another student yells, "Oh yeah? Suck this!" Suzuki jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher: "Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997!"
Now with almost a mob hysteria someone said, "You little ****. If you say anything else, I''ll kill you." Suzuki frantically yells at the top of his voice, "Gary Con*** to Chandra Levy 2001."
The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, "Oh ****, we''re ****ed."
Suzuki said, "The Taliban! 2001"
