Environment is everything that surrounds us. There is no doubt that our life is influenced either directly or indirectly by it. So environment should have received great care from anyone of us. But the fact is that the environment is now in big trouble. It has become a major world problem. What causes this and what can we do to prevent it?

Through the mass media, we all know that our planet actually experiences a rise in the temperature, which can be called the Greenhouse effect. This happens due the fact that certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane for example) trap energy from the sun. Indeed the world has warmed about 1 degree F over the past 100 years. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in the rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife and even us ?" human. The world is becoming hotter and hotter as a result of industrial and agricultural activities, and, therefore, changes the climate. The more industrial development is, the more harmfulness our planet will have to bear. And of course, nature ?" in responding will bring more disasters to the world. According to researchers, natural disasters are prevailing more regularly.

At the same time, the earth?Ts natural resources are being exploited urgently and will inevitably be exhausted before long. Meanwhile, farmers are clearing huge areas of forests to produce wood for building or to make way for feeding land. Consequently, there will be no more forest to regulate the climate. As a saying goes ?oAfter the rain comes the rainbow?. But in this gloomy circumstance, the only thing we can say is that ?oAfter rain comes the flood!?. In ad***ion, poaching is still considered as an extremely serious problem. Rare and precious species are on the verge of extinction. Oceans and rivers are so heavily contaminated by the industrial emissions. We, in fact, are devastating the ecosystem.

Environmental degradation may be a big problem, but therê?Tre still a lot we can all do, however, to make our planet a better place. First, and perhaps the easiest thing, is to save the electricity. By turning off the light, the TV or the computer after finishing with them, we may reduce the amount of greenhouse gases pumped into the air. We should also read and learn about environment. It is vitally important. Then talk to our families and friends, and let them know how knowledgeable we are! We ourselves can absolutely be useful and talented propagators. Besides, planting trees is fun and a great way to purify the air. We can also recycle waste material such as paper, cans, bottles, and plastic bags so that we can use them again. Moreover, if we are truly committed to protecting the environment, we should only buy the organic food, safe in the knowledge that they are naturally cultivated.

On balance, I?Td like conclude that we, as human, have inherited the Earth, but it doesn?Tt mean that we can do whatever we like with it. We have the responsibilities to keep the Earth safe and clean, not only for ourselves today, but also for descendants later.

Fossil Fuels
Conventional power stations burn coal, oil or gas to produce electricity Coal, oil and gas are called fossil fuels because they form over millions of years through the decay, burial and compaction of rotting vegetation on land (coal), and marine organisms on the sea floor (oil and gas). Burning fossil fuels in this way releases large quantities of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which can cause acid rain.
Coal is a solid fuel formed over millions of years by the decay of land vegetation. Over time, successive layers become buried, compacted and heated, a process through which the deposits are turned into coal. Coal is widely used in the generation of electricity because it is a highly concentrated energy source. However, it is not a particularly "clean" fuel, releasing more acidic pollution than either oil or gas. Coal was the first fossil fuel to be exploited on a large scale during the 19th century with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Before the commercial introduction of electricity, coal was primarily used in industrial boilers to create steam energy to power machinery.
Oil is formed from the remains of marine microorganisms (microscopic animals and plants) deposited on the sea floor. As they accumulate over millions of years they gradually infiltrate the microscopic cavities of the sea floor sediment and rock where they decay. The resulting oil remains trapped in these spaces, forming oil reserves which can be extracted through large drilling platforms. The use of oil increased significantly after the Second World War. In the early 1970s, approximately 40% of global fossil fuel use came from oil, but during the 1990s this figure has decreased. Improved energy efficiency has caused oil consumption to decline in many developed, industrialised countries, as well as shifts to other fuels such as natural gas and nuclear energy. Decreasing use of oil is also resulting from tougher environmental restrictions concerning its use in some regions.
Natural gas is formed in the same way as oil, from the remains of marine microorganisms. From the mid-1960s, up until the present day, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of proven reserves of natural gas. Consequently, natural gas has become the fastest-growing energy resource. The present global use of natural gas is approximately 20% of all fossil fuel use, and this figure is predicted to rise in the future. Natural gas provides an alternative to oil or coal in the provision of energy, and in terms of acidic pollution it is a cleaner fuel. Some estimates indicate the reserves of natural gas may be available for up to 400 years.

Acid Rain
Acid rain is a widespread term used to describe all forms of acid precipitation (rain, snow, hail, fog, etc.). Atmospheric pollutants, particularly oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, can cause precipitation to become more acidic when converted *****lphuric and nitric acids, hence the term acid rain. Acid deposition, acid rain and acid precipitation all relate to the chemistry of air pollution and moisture in the atmosphere. Scientists generally use the term acid deposition but all three terms relate to the same issue
