Masters and Ph.D. Studentships, Departments of Radiology and
Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia
The Departments of Radiology and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invite applications for enrollment in September 2009 from students interested in pursuing a Masters or Doctoral level degree in the area of medical image analysis. The successful candidate will be performing research to develop new software algorithms for using medical images, in particular magnetic resonance images (MRI), to monitor pathological progression in neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer''s disease (AD). The student will be part of a team of researchers at the UBC Multiple Sclerosis/Magnetic Resonance Imaging
(MS/MRI) Research Group, which is a highly interdisciplinary group committed to helping patients with neurological disorders through research.
An undergraduate degree in computer science, engineering or related discipline is a prerequisite to enrollment, and preference will be given to applicants with experience in the following topics:
-Computer vision (e.g., image segmentation, image registration, shape modelling, level-sets)
-Signal and image processing (e.g., image resampling, Fourier transform)
-Computer Graphics (e.g., meshes, geometry, visualization)
-Matrix Algebra (e.g., singular value decomposition, 3D transformations)
-Optimization (e.g., gradient descent, genetic algorithms, calculus of variations)
-Image processing libraries such as VTK and ITK
The student will be expected to have excellent programming (C++ and templated programming) skills, and must be proficient on a Unix/Linux platform. Strong mathematical and communication skills (written and oral) are also essential.
The student will enroll in UBC''s innovative Biomedical Engineering Program, which emphasizes a balance of biomedical engineering and life science study with a focus on clinical and industrial application.
Full financial support in the form of tuition waivers, research assistantships, and/or scholarship top-ups are available for all qualified students.
The University of British Columbia is located in the scenic city of Vancouver, Canada, and ranks as one of the world''s top research universities (http://www.ubc.ca/global/index.html).
