    2. Ad***ionally, students should have their study focus on water issues (proven e.g. by the choice of subject of the B. Sc. thesis and the intended focus within the Master studies or by the choice of subject of the M.Sc. thesis and the intended focus within the PhD studies).

    3. Ad***ionally, students have to have an excellent academic record so far and must be sure that they will finish their B.Sc. or M.Sc. studies in time (letter of the supervisor) to start with the M.Sc. or PhD programme in October 2005.

Foreign students may win a full 2-year scholarship for their Master or 3-year scholarship for their PhD studies in ERM. German students may win a partial scholarship with a limited support for "research expenses" (e.g. books, excursions etc.) during their studies and sufficient support for their semester abroad (including travel money).

    Application deadline is February 4th , 2005.

Your application should consist of the following documents:

    1. Proof of current enrolment (Studienbescheinigung)

    3. Tabular up-to-date Transcript of Records with subjects taken so far (including cre***s and marks), prepared by yourself and to be handed in together with your Course Record Book. For students currently doing their B.Sc. or M.Sc. thesis also a confirmed statement about the subject of the B.Sc. or M.Sc. thesis is required.

    4. Financial statement (BAFöG, scholarship, private means etc.)

    5. Letter of motivation stating why you decided to study M.Sc. or PhD

ERM and what your specific interest in water issues is. If you already have an idea about a water related Master or PhD thesis and also an idea about a cooperation (e.g. with one of our partner universities or an institution in your home country), which might result from this thesis, please include it.

    1. PhD Studentship
Impacts of increased nitrogen deposition on carbon and nutrient dynamics in montane ecosystems Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship which is fully funded for 3 years. We have an exciting PhD opportunity for an enthusiastic environmental scientist to investigate the impacts of nitrogen deposition on carbon and nutrient cycling in montane ecosystems. The studentship is fully funded and will make use of an established experimental site located on an area of prostrate heath in the Cairngorms, Scotland. It will enable the student to become experienced in a range of state-of-the-art soil biology techniques including stable isotope probing, pulse-labelling, molecular microbial ecology, as well field ecology.
The successful candidate would primarily be based at the Macaulay Institute in Aberdeen, will have access to their modern laboratory and computing facilities, in ad***ion to the facilities in the School of Biological Sciences, Aberdeen University. He or she will join an internationally renowned research group and will be encouraged to develop his or her own ideas and to disseminate results at national and international meetings. The studentship is offered with all fees paid and with an annual stipend of Ê10,500 for 3 years. Applicants should be able to start soon after the 1 October 2004.
Candidates should have a degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Soil Science or similar (2i or above) and/or a MSc.
Further details of the project are available on request. Interested candidates who wish to discuss the project further on an informal basis and/or wish to receive further details are encouraged to contact one of the following project supervisors:
    Dr Dave Johnson Tel: 01224 273857 (d.johnson@abdn.ac.uk)

    2 PhD-POSITIONS in PLANT ECOPHYSIOLOGY
at Technische UniversitÔt Mẳnchen, Freising, Germany

Two positions are open for PhD-candidates (BAT IIa/2) within the
Collaborative Research Center (SFB 607) õ?oGrowth and Parasite Defenceõ? funded
by the DFG since 1998. The objectives are the mechanistic understanding
of plant-plant competition between beech and spruce under disturbances,
like increased ozone (O3) concentrations. The project includes a unique
free-air O3 fumigation system within the canopy of a mature forest,
where the canopy is readily accessible via scaffoldings and canopy crane.

    Position I
within the SFB 607-subproject B4 õ?oCompetition of adult beech and spruce
trees under disturbance by O3 and gap formationõ? (contact: Dr. K.-H.
    HÔberle):
Nitrogen uptake and its allocation within adult forest trees will be
studied in a 15N labelling experiment.
O3 released directly into the crowns of spruce and beech is used as
disturbance to improve the understanding of N regulation processes.
Related are measurements of root growth, respiration and water uptake
which contribute to analyse the competitive ability of the two tree
    species.
    Position II
within the SFB 607-subproject B5 õ?oC-allocation of juvenile and adult
trees: Impact of competition, disturbance by O3 and ontogenetic scalingõ?
    (contact: PD Dr. T. Grams):
    In 2005, above and below-ground C- and N-allocation of 3-4 year old
beech and spruce (model ecosystems) will be traced via stable isotopes
(13C, 15N) in a phytotron experiment. In the following year the
experiments focus on the C-allocation of adult trees traced via 13C (CO2 exposure
    of complete tree crowns).
Ambitious candidates with a strong background/interest in experimental
work, carrying a degree (Diploma/MSc) in Ecology, Botany or Forestry
are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in plant ecophysiology,
ideally with an emphasis on stable isotopes, photosynthesis, water
relations and statistical evaluation will be advantageous. Persons appointed
will work in close cooperation with other members and groups within the
SFB 607. The starting date is January 2005. Complete applications should
be sent to contact persons above or by e-mail to sfb607@wzw.tum.de.
Closing date is November 15, 2004.

    4.
Graduate Research Assistantship in Spatial Analysis and Modeling of Longleaf Pine Forest Dynamics- University of Georgia/Joseph W. Jones
    Ecological Center

We are seeking a PhD student to pursue research on the
interrelationships of vegetation structure, resource availability, and fire behavior in longleaf pine savannahs. This work will be part of a larger effort to quantify key ecosystem linkages and synthesize them into a spatially explicit model of longleaf pine forest dynamics.
A variety of research topics are available, including study of plant growth responses to resource availability, fire-induced mortality, and influences of vegetation and fuels heterogeneity on fire behavior.
Desired qualifications include an M.S. degree in ecology, forestry, or a related field; or a B.S. degree with significant research experience.
Strong quantitative skills are essential, as evidenced by coursework in or experience with statistics and modeling.
The study site for this project will be Ichauway, the 29,000 acre
outdoor laboratory of the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, located in Newton, GA. Ichauway presently contains one of the largest remaining tracts of longleaf pine-wiregrass forest in the United States, interspersed with pine plantations, hardwood forests, wetlands, fields, and developed areas. Longleaf pine ecosystems are among the most threatened
in North America, and they have also been among the least studied with respect to species biology and ecological functions, as well as forest management and restoration practices. Biological diversity makes Ichauway one of the most significant natural areas in the southeastern United
States, with more than 1,100 documented species of native plants.
Ongoing research programs seek to understand how biodiversity is maintained within these systems, and how they respond to a range of management activities.
This graduate assistantship will be co-sponsored by the University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forest Resources and the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Center, with Dr. Mike Wimberly (WSFR) and Dr. Bob Mitchell (Jones Center) serving as co-advisors. The assistantship will provide a stipend of $16,371/yr at 0.4 EFT and reduced tuition and fees of $477/semester.
The student will complete coursework at the University of Georgia in Athens, and then live and work on site while conducting research at Ichauway. Housing will be provided while the student is in residence at Ichauway. Ad***ional funding is available for research-related expenses, and *****pport travel to present results at professional meeting.
