The Royal Thai Air Force''s procurement plans, which had included an order for eight F/A-18C/D, were hit hard by the Asian economic crisis, resulting in the cancellation of the Hornet order. The F-16 and F-5 remain the principal fighters, with ex-USAF F-16s now being supplied to bolster the original batches. One of the two F-5 squadrons is an air combat training unit. Ex-Luftwaffe Alpha Jets have also been acquired from 2000 to bolster the close support/weapon training fleet, which also includes L-39s.
The Royal Thai Naval Air Division operates a single carrier with ex-Spanish navy Harriers, while A-7 Corsairs form a powerful shore-based attack force. The seas around Thailand are patrolled by Orions, F27s and Do228s. The Royal Thai Army Air Division is largely helicopter-equipped, although a fleet of fixed-wing transports provide support. The AH-1 is the most potent weapon in its inventory. In ad***ion to the three regular services, there is a border police air wing and an agricultural air division.

In recent times, the Philippines have suffered from natural disaster, political unrest, corruption and the Asian economic crisis. The result is an air force struggling to find cash to meet its urgent equipment needs. The F-5 fighter fleet is in need of replacement, but the procurement process has been long, with no end in sight. Used F-16s or more morden F-5s appear the most likely outcome.
Much of the air force''s inventory is concerned with internal security, and has seen considerable action in the ongoing fight against guerillas. Armed helicopters include the MD520 and AUH-76, the latter being a unique armed variant of the S-76. OV-10s also fly on counter-insurgency duties. The seas around the Philippines are patrolled by F-27s and Nomad Seachmasters. The Philippine navy operates a small air element with BO 105 helicopters for SAR and BN-2 Islanders for transport, but has an outstanding requirement for a new shipboard helicopter.

Singapore:
Tiny in size but huge in wealth, the island state of Singapore spends a vast amount of money on defence. Its size and proximity to other nations creates a unique set of defence problems, requiring that it maintains a technological advantage over its neighbours. The fighter force consists primarily of F-16s, recent orders having swollen the fleet considerably. Among the aircraft are F-16D two-seaters with ad***ional avionics in the spine, which are believed to have a defence supression roles. F-5s and A-4s augment the F-16s in the fighter and attack roles. Early warning of attack is vital to Singapore''s defence, making the E-2 Hawkeyes of 111 Squadron among the nation''s most important assets.
Owing to the lack of available airspace, most training is "exported", being conducted in Australia (Cougar and advanced training on S-211s), France (tactical combat training on A-4s) and the US (KC-135, F-16 and CH-47). A new fighter in the class of Rafale or Eurofighter is being sought.
