    ROMEO CLASS (TYPE 033) (SS)
The first of this class of battery/diesel-powered attack submarines was built in the 1960s. Construction stopped around 1987 with the resumption of the ''Ming'' class program. A total of 84 were built and 38 remain in active service, but operational numbers are difficult to access. No submarine spends more than a few days at sea each year because there are not enough trained crews. At least 30 more Romeo class subs are in reserve.
