Artist won?t fix misspelled names on Livermore mosaic

    By RON HARRIS
    Associated Press
    [IMG]
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The artist who misspelled the names of famous people in world history on a large ceramic mosaic outside Livermorê?Ts new library can spell one word with ease: N-O.
That?Ts Maria Alquilar?Ts new position on fixing the typos.
She had planned to fly to California and put the missing ``n? back in Einstein and remove the extra ``â? in Michelangelo, among other fixes. But after receiving a barrage of what she called ``vile hate mail,? Alquilar said Livermore is off her travel itinerary and therê?Tll be no changes by her artistic hand.
``No, I will not return to Livermore for any reason,? Alquilar, of Miami, told The Associated Press in an e-mail. ``There seems to be so much hatred within certain people. They continuously look for a scapegoat. I guess I am the sacrificial goat.?
She previously told officials in Livermore, about 40 miles east of San Francisco, that she would fix the 11 misspellings. She asked for $6,000 plus travel expenses to correct the work they paid her $40,000 to create. The city council, faced with the embarrassing prospect of leaving the typo-strewn work in front of its spanking new library, voted 3-2 to approve the expen***ure.
Now it appears the fix is a no go.
Livermore Mayor Marshall Kamena and Councilwoman Lorraine Dietrich did not return calls seeking comment on what their next move would be.
Alquilar explained that it took her a lot of time and money to create the work, a brightly colored 16-foot-wide circle made up of individual tiles depicting the names and images of famous people in world history.
She noted that plenty of people from the city were on hand during the installation who could and should have seen the errant spellings, she said.
``Even though I was on my hands and knees laying the installation out, I didn?Tt see it,? she said.
The mistakes wouldn?Tt even register with a true artisan, Alquilar said before deciding to leave the work as is.
``The people that are into humanities, and are into Blakê?Ts concept of enlightenment, they are not looking at the words,? she told The AP.
When asked whether she chose the words and names for the work or whether the city provided her with a list, Alquilar took an artistic stance in response.
``The art chose the words,? she said.

Keychain Remote Control Turns Off Most TVs
By MAY WONG, AP Technology Writer
SAN JOSE, Calif. - A lot of people love television but apparently some people have had enough of it, too. A new keychain gadget that lets people turn off most TVs ?" anywhere from airports to restaurants ?" is selling at a faster clip than it would take most people *****rf the channels on their boob tubes.
"I thought there would just be a trickle, but we are swamped," the inventor, Mitch Altman of San Francisco, said Monday in an interview. "I didn''t know there were so many people who were into turning TV off."
Hundreds of orders for Altman''s $14.99 TV-B-Gone gadget poured in Monday after the tiny remote control was announced in Wired magazine and other online media outlets. At times, the unexpected attention overloaded and crashed the Web site of his company, Cornfield Electronics.
The keychain fob works like a universal remote control but one that only turns TVs on or off. With a zap of a button, the gizmo goes through a string of about 200 infrared codes that controls the power of about 1,000 television models. Altman said the majority of TVs should react within 17 seconds, though it takes a little more than a minute for the gizmo to emit all the trigger codes.
Altman, 47, first got the idea for TV-B-Gone a decade ago when he was out with friends at a restaurant and they found themselves all glued to the perched TV instead of talking to each other. No one was around to turn the TV off.
The self-described geek with a masters in electrical engineering started tinkering full-time on the project a few years ago with help from money he had earned from a company he co-founded, data-storage maker 3ware Inc.
Altman remembers spending most of his childhood unwittingly captivated by TV, watching shows like "Gilligan''s Island" and others, whether they were entertaining or not.
He quit as an adult and hasn''t owned a television since 1980.
He has tested the TV-B-Gone remote discreetly in many places, including in other countries, and ?" with the exception of Hong Kong ?" says he usually gets little to no reaction from others after the background TV noise and glare disappears.
But he said he would never dare silently kill the machines in places like sports bars, where patrons expect TVs to be on.
"I can be mischievous, but I''m not going to do anything malicious, and I don''t want to make anyone''s life more difficult," Altman said. "I just don''t like TV, and I''d like people to think more about this powerful medium in their lives."
Altman does not contend that all TV is bad. "There''s just so little time in all of our lives," he said. "Why should we spend so much time on something we don''t necessarily enjoy?"
So beware: Next time you''re at a Laundromat or restaurant, the blaring TV might just mysteriously turn off.

A Liquid Thanksgiving: Turkey in the Straw
    [IMG]
    SEATTLE (Reuters) - Seconds, anyone?
After the startling success of its turkey and gravy-flavored soda during last year''s U.S. holiday season, a Seattle soda company will be serving up green beans and casserole, mashed potatoes, fruitcake and cranberry flavors.
"Last year, the response to our Turkey and Gravy Soda was overwhelming, but we really didn''t have side dishes to go with it," Peter van Stolk, chief executive of specialty soda maker Jones Soda Co., said on Monday.
The tan-colored turkey and gravy-flavored soda sold out last year in three hours after it was offered on the Web and later fetched prices over $100 on eBay Inc.
This year, Jones Soda is offering the turkey and gravy sodas as a set in 15,000 "holiday packs" for $16 each, complete with utensils.
Thanksgiving, a U.S. holiday which falls on the fourth Thursday of November, typically features a dinner with turkey, gravy and other condiments. "The average consumer doesn''t have the time to prepare a full turkey meal," van Stolk quipped.
Particularly noteworthy on the menu is the green beans and casserole soda, van Stolk said, adding, "We''re proud that we accented this dish with fried onions."
The pack was available nationwide at limited retail locations, including Target Corp. stores, beginning on Monday.
The new flavors are in ad***ion to the company''s tra***ional flavors: green apple, bubblegum and crushed melon.

(PENSACOLA, Fla.-AP) December 16 -- The retired aircraft carrier USS Oriskany has left Corpus Cristi, Texas, for the Florida Panhandle on a path that will make it an artificial reef.
The 888-foot-long carrier would be the largest vessel purposely sunk as a reef.
Officials hope the carrier can be scuttled before June 1 to avoid any problems with hurricane season.
Officials with the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation say the ship is expected to arrive in Pensacola by next Monday.
The carrier''''s wooden flight deck was removed in Texas. It had about 700 pounds of an industrial compound known to cause cancer in animals.
The ship will remain at Pensacola''''s port while final preparations are made for its sinking about 25 miles off Pensacola.
