Greece Approves $324M Tank Order, Force Restructuring

Leopard 2The Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) has approved a bilateral agreement with the German government for the procurement of 333 used German army Leopard-1 and Leopard-2 tanks. The cost of the tanks is estimated at EUR 270 million (USD $324 Million). Germany has sold a large number of surplus-designated Leopard and Leopard 2 tanks to countries around Europe and Scandanavia, often upgrading them to newer configurations in the process. In March 2002, the Hellenic Army of Greece announced that it had selected the Leopard 2 GR (a variation of the Leopard 2 A6), with a requirement for 170 tanks.
In ad***ional news, the KYSEA approved a new command structure for the Greek Armed Forces, designed to make them more flexible and efficient.
Under the new structure, the Armed Forces General Staff remains the only headquarters of all the branches of the armed forces on an operational and strategic level, while all the interbranch commands are converted to operational commands. In ad***ion, a developing interbranch formation is created for rapid reaction on a brigade level on a tactical level, answerable directly to the armed forces chief.
According to national defence ministry sources, the new structure is expected to increase the capacity for rapid reaction, enhance interbranch cooperation and lower operational cost. What this means to analysts is that Greece appears to be embarking on the path of "jointness" and transformation traveled by most modern militaries.

KYSEA approves F-16s, Leopard tanks procurement, new command structure for Armed Forces

The Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence Council (KYSEA) on Tuesday approved the procurement of 30 US-made F-16 Block-52 fighter planes with the option of purchasing an ad***ional 10 of this type to meet the Hellenic Air force''s immediate operational needs, during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Tuesday. It also gave the go-ahead for the procurement of 333 German-made Leopard tanks. Further, the KYSEA approved a new commanded structure for the Hellenic Armed Forces, designed to make them more flexible and efficient, reduce operational costs, and enhance inter-branch cooperation.
The agreement for the purchase of the aircraft will be signed between the governments of Greece and the United States, while that for the tanks between the governments of Greece and Germany, the defence minister clarified.
The cost of the jet fighters, in current prices according to the minister, amounts to 1.1 billion euros but the final amount will depend on negotiations with the American side, while offset benefits will concern infrastructures and support for the rest of the F-16s belonging to the Greek air force.
As regards the procurement of new fighter aircraft, tentatively anticipated in 2009, the minister said the proposal by the defence ministry is for the purchase of 30 new aircraft with an option for the purchase of another 10. The minister clarified that the type of aircraft has not been decided.
KYSEA also okayed the new structure of forces and the new structure for the armed forces'' administration to enable them to become more flexible and effective and to have a greater rapid reaction ability, as the minister said, while he also appointed the new leadership of military justice.
According to national defence ministry sources, the new structure is expected to increase the capacity for rapid reaction, enhance interbranch cooperation and lower operational cost.

    Vessel Towing Stranded Russian Mini-Sub
    AP - 1 hour, 20 minutes ago
VLADIVOSTOK, Russia - A Russian mini-submarine carrying seven sailors snagged on a fishing net and was stuck 625 feet down on the Pacific floor Friday. A Russian vessel attempted to tow the stranded sub to shallower waters as the United States and Britain rushed unmanned vehicles there to help in rescue efforts. It was unclear whether there was enough oxygen aboard the mini-sub to keep the crew alive long enough for remote-controlled vehicles to reach them from bases in San Diego and Britain.

Anti-submarine Missile to Debut in Korea by 2007

(Source: Korea Overseas Information Service; issued Aug. 4, 2005)

A state-run defense research institute said Thursday it plans to develop a sophisticated long-range anti-submarine missile on its own by 2007 as part of programs to build a "cooperative self-reliant" defense capability.

The Agency for Defense Development (ADD) said it has set aside a total of 100 billion won ($990 million) a year to build the anti-submarine missiles, which are being planned to equip 4000-ton-class destroyers.

Last May, the Navy launched its fourth 4,000-ton-class destroyer, "Wang Geon," which is capable of waging anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare as well as electronic surveillance operations and stealth functions.

The Wang Geon is the fourth and last 4,000-ton-class destroyer that the Navy has developed under its shipbuilding program, codenamed KDX-II. KDX refers to Korean Destroyer Experimental.

The envisaged satellite-guided missile will be able to hit an enemy submarine located at a distance of about 20 kilometers (12 miles). Currently, the United States, Russia and France have their own anti-submarine missiles.

"The ADD has devoted itself to boosting the nation''s military capability and competitiveness in preparation for future warfare by developing advanced weapons systems, including radar-evading stealth technology," said Choi Tae-in, vice director of the agency, in a briefing. The institute celebrated the 35th anniversary of its founding on Aug. 3.

    HMS Invincible Retires Early
(Source: Thales UK. Issued Aug. 4, 2005)

The Royal Navy''s flagship, the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible, has been retired from service in Portsmouth six months early.

She had been in service since 1977, and was deployed in the Falklands war. She was honoured on her final trip by a fly-past involving Sea Harriers, Sea King helicopters, the Lynx Pairs Display Team and RAF Chinook helicopters. With the Ark Royal currently undergoing a major refit and due to re-enter service late next year, Invincible''s retirement leaves the Illustrious as the only aircraft carrier in operational service.

In 2012 the MoD plans to replace all of the Royal Navy''s aircraft carriers with Thales-designed future aircraft carriers (CVF). CVF will see the development and construction of two 60,000-tonne aircraft carriers that will ultimately replace the 22,000 tonne Invincible, Illustrious and Ark Royal warships. The programme is the biggest of its kind to take place within the British defence industry and both ships, the largest and most powerful to be built in the UK, are due to be completed at an estimated total cost of £3 billion.

Also decommissioned this summer was the Royal Navy''s longest serving warship, the HMS Cardiff. Having served in both the Gulf war and the Falklands, her final tour was in the Me***erranean as part of a NATO force patrolling the sea-lanes to curtail terrorist movements. Her decommissioning comes as part of defence cuts announced last year, which include the removal from service of three Type 42 destroyers by March 2006. As yet, there are no plans for the future of the ship and she will remain anchored in Portsmouth until a decision is made.

HMS Cardiff will be replaced by a Type 45 Daring-class anti-air warfare destroyer for which Thales UK is providing the radar band electronic support measures (RESM) system. The RESM has been developed from Outfit UAT with an improved signal process and emitter identification technology and the system is also being used to upgrade the radar on all other Royal Navy warships to bring them up to the Type 45''s cutting-edge standard.

Thales UK is also involved in the development and supply of the Fully Integrated Communications System and the Principal Anti-Air Missile System.
