Last fling for ''Top Gun'' jets

NORFOLK, Va. â?" The Navy''s "Top Gun" planes are on their last combat mission.
The two squadrons of active F-14 Tomcats left Oceana Naval Air Station this week to join the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which pulled out of Norfolk Naval Station on Thursday en route to war duty in the Persian Gulf.
Some 7,500 sailors are on the ships in the Roosevelt strike group. The air wing also includes F/A-18 Hornets, which along with Super Hornets will replace all the F-14s in the next year.
Cmdr. Rick LaBranche, head of one of the F-14 squadrons, said the fighter plane first built in the 1970s has an enduring following.
"It''s the pride of any air show," he said during a telephone interview before he flew out Friday. "People come around to see that bad boy."
The very nature of the Persian Gulf mission is hazardous, LaBranche said. But he added: "We definitely want to make sure that she ... goes out on top."
Only 30 of the nearly 300 members of the squadron fly the two-seaters; the rest work to make sure the Tomcats are in shape for safe missions, the squadron commander said.
"Some people have devoted their whole lives to maintaining it," LaBranche said. "To see it go away is an emotional event."
Maintenance is the reason the Navy is replacing the F-14s with the smaller, slower F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets. The Hornets'' advanced technology makes them easier to maintain.
When the squadrons return to the Virginia Beach base, the process of converting to F/A-18s will begin. LaBranche''s squadron will go last, making the final switch *****per Hornets by late summer of 2006 or early fall.
Museums and military bases will put some of the Tomcats on display. Some will be recycled, and others will be preserved in case they are needed again.

hehe ! trông cái ảnh phía trên lại thắc mắc, không hiểu cảm giác đứng cạnh cái F14 đang cất cánh trên tàu sân bay như thằng nhân viên trong ảnh thì như thế nào nhỉ ? ? có bác nào đứng gần Fighter như thế chưa ?

Tôi thấy tay đứng gần F14 đấy chẳng tỏ thái độ gì cả .Còn anh em ta chắc chưa có ai đứng gần đến như vậy .

Rồi, em đứng cạnh con mig21 rồi, còn đứng cạnh cả con A37 nữa, bác thích thì ra đầu đường Trường Chinh mà đứng gần fighter .
Đùa thế thôi chứ em đã đi qua sân bay Kép rồi, ngồi trong xe con mà mấy em Mig cất cánh bay qua đầu tức hết cả ngực.

Đứng cạnh con IAK-52 mà thấy tủi thân quá
Lúc sau lại đứng cạnh L39 nữa, vài con đã sửa xong, vài con mở lung tung cả ra, động cơ gỡ hết đi bảo dưỡnco (Có 1 cái chứ mấy)

Tôi nghĩ ý bạn kia nói đứng kế bên lúc nó đang rầm rú cất cánh chứ không phảii chỉ đậu dưới đất.
Forzet đừng buốn, ở nước ngoài dân đại gia mới có tiền chơi L39 đó.

USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) departed San Diego Jan. 4 on a deployment to conduct naval operations in support of the Global War on Terrorism, as well as national and theater cooperative security commitments in the western Pacific. This will be the maiden deployment for the Navyâ?Ts newest Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
â?oDuring both COMPTUEX and JTFEX, Ronald Reagan and CVW-14 proved to be a formidable fighting force,â? said Rear Adm. Michael H. Miller, Ronald Reagan Strike Group Commander.
â?oBoth of these major exercise, as well as the other training events leading up to deployment, have proved that we have the speed and agility to quickly execute operations around the world in support of the war on terror. When we deploy for real-world operations, Carrier Strike Group Seven will be an example of how the Navy is able to carry out our mission anytime, anywhere in the world,â? said Miller.
According to Ronald Reagan Commanding Officer Capt. Terry B. Kraft, the ship was made ready for the deployment through the hard work and dedication of the officers and crew.
â?oIt was great watching the way the crew of the ship and the air wing came together during work-ups to make the ship ready for deployment. I know this crew is ready to carry out any mission that will be asked of us during the upcoming deployment,â? said Kraft.
The Ronald Reagan Strike Group is comprised of CVW-14, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Reagan, the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), the guided-missile destroyers USS McCampbell (DDG 85) and USS Decatur (DDG 73), the fast combat support ship USS Rainier (AOE-7), and Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit 11, Det. 15.
The squadrons of CVW-14 include the â?oRed****sâ? of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 22, the â?oFist of the Fleetâ? of VFA-25, the â?oStingersâ? of VFA-113, the â?oEaglesâ? of VFA-115, the â?oBlack Eaglesâ? of Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 113, the â?oCougarsâ? of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 139, the â?oProvidersâ? of Carrier Logistics Support (VRC) 30, and the â?oBlack Knightsâ? of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 4.
Reagan was commissioned in July 2003, making it the ninth Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier. The ship is named after the 40th U.S. president, and carries the motto of â?oPeace through Strength,â? a recurrent theme during the Reagan presidency.
