?o10,000 would die in A-plant attack on Iran?
The majority of media outlets are now speculating that the launch of a U.S. outright war using nuclear warheads against Iran is in the final planning stages.
Experts say that various military exercises have been conducted starting early 2005 and the U.S. coalition partners including Israel and Turkey are in "an advanced stage of readiness".
But a research by Oxford Research Group, specialized in arms control and non-proliferation issues, warned that a military strike targeting NUCLEAR sites in the Islamic Republic "either by the U.S. or Israel, is not an option that should be considered under any circumstances," as it would kill thousands of people, including troops, NUCLEAR programme staff and "many hundreds" of civilians, and spark a long-lasting war by escalating military confrontation in the region.
The UN atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency announced last week its decision to take the Islamic Republic?Ts NUCLEAR DOSSIER to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.
A war on Iran would result in "a protracted military confrontation" involving Israel, Lebanon and some Gulf states, according to the research.
The report by University of Bradford professor Paul Rogers suggests that a possible U.S. attack on Iran, the targets of which would include the nuclear reactor at Bushehr, would likely consist of simultaneous air strikes on more than 20 key NUCLEAR and military facilities, designed to disable the country?Ts entire nuclear and air-defence capabilities.
According to the report, striking Iran would lead to the Islamic republic withdrawing from the NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY, which will eventually result in accelerating NUCLEAR AMBITIONS, in Iran and other countries.
It would also fuel anti-American sentiment worldwide, the report added.
The research, Iran: Consequences of a War, says that nuclear scientists and technicians would be targets in the opening salvos as a possible military strike by the U.S. as it will be focused on eliminating further nuclear development.
The Oxford report further states that Britain could be drawn into the conflict if the Prime Minister Tony Blair allowed the Americans use bases at Fairford, Glos, and on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia to launch B2 bombers, which can carry 40,000lb of precision bombs. More than 100 American bombers, many based on carriers in the Gulf, would be used in a surprise air attack on 20 key nuclear and military facilities.
"A military response to the current crisis is a particularly dangerous option and should not be considered further. Alternative approaches must be sought, however difficult these may be," said the group?Ts director, John Sloboda.
But Iran has made it clear that it?Ts ready and prepared to retaliate by launching attacks using long-range missiles, secret commando units, according to new U.S. intelligence assessments and military specialists.
Officials in Washington and Israel, as well as the U.S. PRESIDENT have repeatedly hinted at the possibility of using the military option to force Iran give up its nuclear ambitions, ignoring numerous warning by military and intelligence officials that attacking Iran, described by the U.S. intelligence analysts as ''''''''more confident and assertive" than it has been since the 1979 Islamic revolution, would lead to reprisals across the region, and perhaps even inside the U.S. itself.
''''''''When the Americans or Israelis are thinking about [military force], I hope they will sit down and think about everything the ayatollahs could do to make our lives miserable and what we will do to discourage them," John Pike, director of the think tank GlobalSecurity.org, was quoted as saying earlier.
''''''''There could be a cycle of escalation."

Iran launches new surface-to-air missile production
    By Alon Ben-David JDW Correspondent
    Tel Aviv
Iran launched a mass production line for a new man-portable low- to very-low-altitude surface-to-air missile called the Mithaq-2 on 6 February.
The shoulder-launched Mithaq-2, believed to be a short-range passive infra-red missile developed by the Iranian Defence Ministry''s Shahid Kazemi Industrial Complex in Tehran, is an advanced version of the indigenously developed Mithaq-1 air-defence system.
The Iranian army, which operates older Soviet-made SA-7 Strela 2M and SA-14 Strela 3 man-portable air-defence systems, has been seeking to boost its air-defence capabilities as the dispute regarding the nuclear programme escalates. In anticipation of a potential airstrike on its nuclear facilities, the Iranians acquired 29 Russian Tor-M1 (SA-15 Guantlet) self-propelled surface-to-air missile systems in December 2005.

Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet Welcomes Reagan Strike Group to Persian Gulf Area of Operations
    Story Number: NNS060228-11
    Release Date: 2/28/2006 1:35:00 PM

By Chief Journalist (SW) Donnie W. Ryan, USS Ronald Reagan Public Affairs
USS RONALD REAGAN, At Sea (NNS) -- Vice Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/commander, U.S. 5th Fleet (COMUSNAVCENT/5th Fleet), commander, Combined Maritime Forces visited USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Feb. 27 to welcome the shipâ?Ts crew, air wing and embarked carrier strike group staff to the 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO).
The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is currently supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, as well as conducting maritime security operations (MSO) in the Persian Gulf. Reaganâ?Ts aircraft have been supporting ground troops in Iraqi around the clock since arriving in the 5th Fleet AOO, less than a week ago.
â?oYour critical support to U.S., Iraqi and multinational forces on the ground is vital,â? Walsh told Reagan Sailors. â?oBecause of the contributions of the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen who preceded you, the Iraqi people have the opportunity to determine their own future, a future free from oppression. Itâ?Ts their country and their future. Itâ?Ts up to them to decide what Iraq will ultimately look like, but without your efforts and your guarantees, this will not be possible.â?
According to Walsh, MSO set the con***ions for security and stability in the maritime environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons and other material.
â?oWith MSO, you will play a key role in helping to see the con***ions necessary for stability in the region,â? said Walsh. â?oYou are not in this alone. One-third of our maritime force is collation. It is important to understand that no one country can tackle this challenge alone given the vast expanse of the ocean and collective interest.â?
â?oYou are arriving at a critical time,â? said Walsh. â?oWhile the mission may seem tedious and routine at times, the daily routine is the most important times to keep our skills sharp and focused. Those skills canâ?Tt be summoned at the moment of crisis if theyâ?Tve been squandered by complacency, or inconsistency, or a compromise of our standards.â?
â?oThe success of Maritime Security Operations and support to multinational forces on the ground in Operation Iraqi Freedom is now in your hands,â? said Walsh. â?oYou are trained, ready, and I have every confidence that you will succeed.â?
â?oThis is an important time in our history and one which I think you''ll find both interesting and rewarding,â? said Walsh. â?oI am glad that you are here and that you will be playing a critical role in our efforts to help set the con***ions for security and stability throughout the region.â?
During his visit, Walsh also met with chief petty officers from Reagan, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 7 and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14 to discuss concerns and liberty policies in the 5th Fleet AOO.
Reagan is the Navyâ?Ts newest Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and is currently on its maiden deployment. Commissioned in 2003, the San Diego-based aircraft carrier is part of a routine rotation of U.S. maritime forces in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOO.

NSWC Engineers Deliver Combat Readiness to USS Ronald Reagan
    Story Number: NNS060307-09
    Release Date: 3/8/2006 1:30:00 AM
From Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Public Affairs
DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) engineers who worked with industry and Sailors on land and during multiple at sea periods aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) are now standing ready to provide combat system technical support as the carrier supports ground troops in Iraq since arriving in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
ùẵThis is far-reaching collaboration that makes a difference in our militaryùẵs ability to fight, win and come home safely,ùẵ said NSWC Dahlgren Division Commander, Capt. Joseph McGettigan. ùẵThe partnership of our engineers with Sailors, industry and systems experts throughout the Navy Enterprise was essential to provide the highly advanced combat systems and technologies to the USS Ronald Reagan.ùẵ
The Reagan Combat Direction Center (CDC) team operates a Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) MK 2-based combat system designed to respond with a rapid reaction, anti-air defense capability against high-speed, low-flying anti-ship missiles now in the inventories of many potentially hostile nations. The system identifies and classifies targets, prioritizes and conducts engagement, vectors interceptor aircraft to targets, and exchanges targeting information and engagement orders among ships in the Reagan Strike Group and various service components in the joint theater.
In ad***ion to SSDS, Reaganùẵs combat readiness is enhanced with Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC), Common Data Link Management System (CDLMS) and Shipboard Gridlock System (SGS). Cooperative engagement will allow large numbers of CEC-equipped surface ships and aircraft to participate in an air-defense network that would enable them to share fire-control-quality radar target measurements in real time.
ùẵThe CVN 76 Strike Group Support Team from NSWC provided invaluable assistance throughout our workup cycle,ùẵ said USS Ronald Reagan Commanding Officer Capt. Terry B. Kraft in regards to the civilians who worked aboard Reagan during underway periods from May 2003 to December 2005. ùẵThe inherent complexities of the Ship Self Defense System, and the new technology involved, made their job particularly challenging. I appreciated how the team worked side-by-side with our Sailors to make us combat ready for our maiden deployment.ùẵ
The combined Reagan Strike Group Team (RSGT) effort comprised about 250 engineers from NSWC Dahlgren, NSWC Port Hueneme, NSWC Corona, the Navyùẵs Program Executive Office for Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS), Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command and a Naval Sea Systems (NAVSEA) Command Directorate that supports modeling, simulation, stimulation, and analysis. Reagan ùẵship ridersùẵ consisted of 75 RSGT civilians. However, no more than 30 team members would conduct developmental testing aboard the newest and most technologically advanced ship in the fleet during each at sea period.
ùẵThe combat system capabilities onboard USS Ronald Reagan represent the most advanced, state of the art combat system the Navy has ever delivered to a carrier and is the first non-Aegis combat system to ever be certified,ùẵ said NSWC Dahlgren Force Warfare Systems Department Head John Burrow. ùẵIt is a cre*** to the tremendous cooperative efforts of PEO Carriers and PEO IWS, our industry partners, and NAVSEA headquarters and field personnel. It clearly demonstrates the best spirit of government-industry collaboration and reaffirms the significance of the technical contributions of our field activities.ùẵ
Collaboration among Sailors and civilian engineers ensured the best technical, training, and operations support was provided to Reagan combat system operators and joint interface control officers.
"Because our combat systems suite is the newest and one of the most advanced in the fleet, having the systems experts on board from Naval Surface Warfare Center ensured our Combat Direction Center team deployed ùẵcombat readyùẵ,ùẵ said Cmdr. Rick Mountain, Reagan CDC officer. ùẵThe engineers from NSWC quickly integrated with the crew and provided them the training and the assistance to operate the systems to their maximum potential."
Navy civilian engineers are now busy upgrading combat readiness on other ships and aircraft carriers, including USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

US launches biggest air assault in Iraq since 2003
    March 17, 2006 - 6:38AM
The US military has launched its biggest air offensive in Iraq since the 2003 invasion against insurgents near a town where recent violence raised fears of civil war.
Announced with media fanfare just hours after Iraq''s parliament held a brief first meeting that did nothing to end a political stalemate over forming a government, the US military said 50 aircraft were taking part in the operation north of Baghdad.
The US military released to the media photographs of troop-carrying Black Hawk helicopters lined up in a row for the offensive. There were no pictures of warplanes.
A Pentagon official said it was "predominantly" a helicopter operation that involved UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and other aircraft and the insertion of ground forces.
A military statement said "Operation Swarmer" involved more than 1,500 Iraqi and US troops and 200 armoured vehicles targeting insurgents active near Samarra, 100 km north of Baghdad.
A defence official in Washington said 600-700 of the troops involved were Iraqi government forces. The rest were Americans.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari said the offensive showed Iraqi forces, some facing accusations of cooperating with the rebels, are increasingly capable of securing the country.
The US military has launched several major offensives against Sunni Arab insurgents since the 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, including one involving several thousand soldiers that captured the former rebel stronghold of Fallujah.
There were also a series of assaults in the rebel heartland in western Iraq''s Anbar province which failed to hurt the insurgency and infuriated Iraqis who dug their loved ones out of the rubble after US air strikes.
Security crackdowns were also carried out near Samarra, the the site of a bombing attack last month on a Shi''ite shrine that set off sectarian reprisals and pushed Iraq to the brink of sectarian civil war.
The military statement said the offensive launched this morning was "expected to continue for several days as a thorough search of the objective area is conducted".
"Initial reports from the objective area indicate that a number of enemy weapons caches have been captured, containing artillery shells, explosives, IED-(bomb) making materials, and military uniforms," said the statement.
The US military has issued frequent statements about the capture of arms, but Iraq is still awash with weapons.
As it has done in the past, the US military made a point of saying both American and Iraqi forces were taking part in the operation in an apparent bid to show that rebuilding of Iraqi forces was making progress.
The United States has 130,000 troops in Iraq. Washington has said it will begin withdrawing troops as US-trained Iraqi forces take over security.
But US military officials have said few units were capable of fighting insurgents on their own, let alone protecting people from suicide bombings, shootings, and kidnappings.
