Trước thế chiến thứ nhất

Trên vùng đất Ukraine ngày nay và một phần rộng lớn của nước Nga, vào thế kỷ thứ 9 sử sách đã ghi lại sự tồn tại của vương quốc Kyivan-Rus với thủ đô là Kiev.

Năm 988, Ðại Ðế Volodymyr đã ra sắc lệnh công nhận Kitô Giáo là quốc giáo của vương quốc Kyivan-Rus.

Kiev được coi là thành phố Mẹ của tất cả các thành phố của Nga trong thế kỷ 11 và thế kỷ 12.

Vào thế kỷ 12, người Nga dần tách khỏi Ukraine và hình thành một quốc gia riêng.

Ðến thế kỷ thứ 13, phần phía Ðông của vương quốc bị xâm lược bởi quân Mông Cổ và bị tàn phá rất nặng nề. Phần phía Tây của vương quốc, mà quan trọng nhất là khu vực Galicia – được hình thành vào thế kỷ thứ 12, may mắn không bị tàn phá.

Trong các miền thuộc Áo Hung, người Ukraine được giữ bản sắc, phong tục, tập quán của riêng mình.

Các phong trào quốc gia đòi độc lập hoạt động rất sôi nổi.

Còn trong các phần thuộc Nga, người Nga luôn cố gắng đồng hóa người Ukraine để duy trì sự chiếm đóng lâu dài.
