Scott reached the (A)South Pole by the time (B) Amundson did, but found that his rival had beaten him (C)by a matter of a (D) few days.
Câu này đúng là quá khó. Ngay khi google cái a few cũng thấy là ít dùng mà. Nếu đáp án là B thì tui sẽ sửa là at the time, và giải thích như sau:
Nếu dùng by the time thì theo đúng ngữ pháp (strictly!) thì phải ghi Scott had reached
Không thể dùng "In the meantime" được (meantime là 1 chữ) bởi vì In the meantime là adverb chứ không phải conjunction. Cũng như In ad***ion (adv) không thể thay thế vị trí của And (conj.) được.
The next program starts in five minutes; in the meantime, here''s some music.

Mời các bác xác nhận lại giùm là câu này không sai (bởi vì người Mỹ viết mừ, )
When evaluating the results of polls, it is important to examine both the polling agency and the polling question for bias.
(from Thinking for Yourself by Marlys Mayfield)
Câu trên có phạm lỗi dangling modifier không? Ai evaluate? It là chủ ngữ giả thì có coi nó là chủ ngữ được không? Một câu phạm lỗi dangling modifier là câu như:
When first found by scientists, they knew that this could be a great substance.

Hi nooneknow, sorry that the example of BY A MATTER OF A FEW DAYS isn''''t from Merriam-Webster''''s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th, BUT from THE MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY, a pocket paperback dictionary that DRAWS SPECIFICALLY on the MW''''s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th E***ion. As you can see now, it''''s just the same thing, because both are published by the same person, same company of the same face, same name, same somethings..... I came across it but just thought that it was from the 10th E***ion, because I had 2 Merriam-Webster paperback dictionaries, MWCD 10th E***ion and The MW Dictionary. For the one from which I scanned the page, pls click on this link, if you still want to verify if I''''m a bocpheter or not.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0877799113/ref=sib_dp_pt/104-6885294-2644715
And of course, the scanned image, i.e the scanned page just above the text is exactly from the same dictionary, whose link is provided above for verification which is to clear any doubts.
I''m pretty sure that the example, IN A MATTER OF A FEW DAYS shown on the scanned page, is crystal-clear so that nobody will mix it with something else
    Cheers!

Hi Caltrop, this is what I found by chance on the net... interesting stuff, isn''''t it?? Funny as well....
"I''''ve been wondering about this sentence for years. The grammar sounds good but there is a contradiction in meaning. If Scott reached the South Pole before Amundson, then Scott arrived first. But if his rival had beaten him, then Amundson arrived first.
The best solution that I have come up with is to change "by the time" to "about(or around) the time". Even though he may have hoped that he arrived first, it is not clear. He could have arrived a little earlier or a little later. He wasn''''t immediately sure. After, he learned the truth. This would eliminate the contradiction."

A câu này có lẽ là chủ ngữ được ẩn đi. Câu đầy đủ là
Never before or since have I given so many so much for so few
