The Golden Compass đưa người xem trở về bối cảnh Châu Âu thời Trung Cổ nhưng có những con tàu kỳ dị bay lượn trên không cùng những thuật giả kim nhiệm màu. Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) là một cô bé mồ côi sống cùng với linh thú của cô, một con thú được chia sẻ một phần linh hồn của người chủ, tại trường Jordan, Anh quốc. Một hôm, tình cờ cô bé nghe thấy chú của mình, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), tiết lộ với những học giả về một loại bột vàng có tên là Dust với nhiều khả năng thần bí. Lyra không ngờ rằng loại bột đó lại gây ra sự mất tích của rất nhiều trẻ em trong trường và chính cô cũng bị rơi vào âm mưu của nữ học giả độc ác Coulter (Nicole Kidman) cùng con khỉ vàng linh thú quỷ quyệt của mụ. Tại cực Bắc, nơi Lyra tìm thấy các bạn và chú Asriel, cô bé và người chú đã tình cờ tạo ra một lỗ hổng lớn thông sang một thế giới khác, tồn tại song song với thế giới này, chứa đầy bí ẩn huyền diệu...
Không mấy người Việt Nam biết đến Phillip Pullman nhưng tiểu thuyết gia người Anh này rất nổi tiếng ở phương Tây. Đặc biệt, trilogy His Dark Materials của ông được xếp vào hàng ngũ những truyện viết cho thiếu nhi ăn khách nhất và đoạt nhiều giải thưởng. Tập đầu tiên, The Golden Compass đã đoạt giải Carnegie Medal cho sách thiếu nhi năm 1995 và đến năm 2007, ban tổ chức giải đã bầu The Golden Compass là một trong mười tiểu thuyết thiếu nhi có ảnh hưởng lớn nhất suốt 70 năm qua. Tập cuối cùng, The Amber Spyglass cũng đoạt giải Whitbread Prize cho sách thiếu nhi xuất sắc nhất năm 2001.
Dù vậy, việc New Line đầu tư vào một dự án phim "trẻ em" như này cũng bị coi là mạo hiểm không kém khi họ dốc hầu bao cho Lord of the Rings bảy năm về trước. Kinh phí của tập đầu tiên The Golden Compass ước tính vào khoảng 150 triệu USD và có khả năng tăng thêm khi phim bước vào giai đoạn hậu kỳ. Bộ phim cũng quy tụ được dàn diễn viên nổi tiếng gồm Nicole Kidman, Eric Bana, Sam Elliott, Kevin Bacon. Đặc biệt, Daniel Craig và Eva Green hình như có duyên nợ với nhau khi họ đều có mặt trong Casino Royale, The Golden Compass và tập phim James Bond thứ 22 sắp tới.
